As I pedalled my bicycle to work this A.M.

Oh, I saw baby rabbits (v.cute), a duck catching a fish, lots of cute little wild furry things, butterflies etc etc but o no, you metropolitan sophisticates don't waht to hear abt any ov that bucolic garbage, I'm very sure. So.....

I cycled in this morning, and on the way in I go along this road where there's a right turn, which then goes over a bridge. Today, as I came up to the bridge, I noticed a little hatchback car parked up there. The driver was apparently slumped over the steering wheel. As I cycled past the car I took a look to see if he was all right. What I saw has imprinted itself on my memory. He was "doing a line". Yes, on a busy road, in broad daylight, at a peak traffic hour, this guy had pulled over to hoof some drugs up his nose. As if this wasn't bad enough, IMMEDIATELY THEREAFTER, as I pedalled along, by which I mean about 25 yards further along, this big Volvo sedan passed me by. I looked up and noticed the number plate:

WAR 666

I felt all weird and disassociated for a couple of seconds, and not in a very pleasant way, I must confess. How about that, eh?

Oh, and you should perhaps be aware that:

Wu-Tang's Ghostface Killah has launched his own label, Starks Enterprises & has signed a deal with Def Jam. Ghost is aiming to release his untitled album before the end of this year. "They on top right now. They control the radio, its bananas. We not gonna change nothing. Going from Epic to Def Jam is like going from the Padres to Yankees," Ghost told AllHipHop.com.

I didn't see that on the way to \/\/3rK, ov course, that's the hot poop from "alerts", which dropped into my mailbox as I posted the above thing, and which is presented here as a publick service, not as a cheap subterfuge to get my posting onto the "new answers" page, o no.

I just got done riding my bike outside my neighborhood for the first time ever. It was excellent. I live in an area with lots of cows so when I pass them on my bike they all stare at me. They can hear me coming because of my Hello Kitty bell that rings on the old country roads. Is it weird if I talk to the cows and refer to them by the numbers on their ear tags? Number 24 is my favorite, with Number 50 a close second. Also something ruined my bike-riding-cow-talkin-time, I passed a marker that had said "So and So 18xx-18xx, shot in the back by So and So" then on down the marker it said "Unnamed Negro Slave..blah blah". I guess that's Arkansas for you though.

Great post Norman!

On my way to work, I often see bunnies, herons, big fish in the canal, dragonflies, ducks which I say hello to and sometimes I even see a woodpecker. This is why West London is so great.

On the tube once a guy sat opposite me started smoking heroin from some foil. Nobody said a word.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no wildlife in hardcore S.London though I tried to grow some from old bread.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jel --, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Believe me Jel, if you'd seen that bread you wouldn't've bet against Tom's attempt succeeding.

nabisco%%, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
so i am looking to buy a mountain bike again, i havent been on a bike since i was hit by a car in 2000. what is the absolute lowest i should spend on a bike? all i want is good brakes and a few speeds. what brands should i stay away from?

kephm, Monday, 26 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Since then I have seen foxes (several times) herons (v v often) goths fukcing (once [was enough])

absolute minimum = 250 quid, unless it's used or an end-of-liner. I would avoid shimano megarange gears, having wasted several hours of my life recently trying to get them to work properly, but it is possible that you will not be able to avoid them. avoid full-suspension, "Y"-frames at all costs at low price points. Dawes do a reasonable range, as do raleigh, at their higher price points (ie 250-300 quid) If you can get the same m/c for cheaper just b/c it does not have front suspension forks, you'd probably be better going for the cheaper model at this price point. Mechanical simplicity = all. Avoid anything fitted w/"camel" tyres, or if you find a reasonable machine fitted w/them, replace them and the inner tubes immediately.

I want a bicycle. I kept seeing these fancy PURPLE BIKES in Cambridge and I just coveted one. Only £70! Cheap! (Cheaper than a punt, at least.) Problem is, I can't really ride a bike. :-(

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish Norm was around to service my bicycle :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hey Norm, the other week while driving down Dalston lane, I saw a bloke ride away on an incredibly swanky Klein, that he can't have paid more than fifty quid for judging by the wedge he handed over. I nearly wept, back when I was into my mountain biking I would have killed for a pretty pretty Klein.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well worth picking up for the city rider (we have just become dealers for these)

http://www.dahon.co.uk

Whatever happened to "katie" anyway? Another "old-timer" ?I haven't seen around for a long while.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

quid = how many american dollars? (google is down)

kephm, Monday, 26 July 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

call it about 80 dollars to be generous.

Obviously they're all nicked down there, and the bloke who bought it had no idea what he was buying

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have NO IDEA what the situationm is w/r/t the bike trade in the US! Sorry! If you're buying used, and find a decent ORANGE for a good price, that's a good brand is all I have to offer!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, thanks

kephm, Monday, 26 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i stopped riding my bike to work after
1. getting caught in a torrential downpour in palo alto
2. slipping and falling to the street after rain in a busy parking lot

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

but surely it doesn't rain every day?
