I put "wanting" over "getting" more and more in my old age. No, seriously. It's actually becoming pleasant to want/miss something, because it extends the imaginative experience of getting the thing, makes it richer and more complex. So when the gratification arrives it's not so fleeting; there's a whole pyramid of experiences, anticipation, memories, to which The Thing is just a capstone.

Equating what she said with unrestrained greed and excess is pretty questionable if you ask me. To say nothing of the fact that I don't see how any one answer can be right wrong, desire is an very tricky thing, often with little to do with an actual object/object attainment/gratification.

:)

I wasn't equating what she said with the pic, I was saying that INSTANT GRATIFICATION IS AWESOME

scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i guess it's kind of nice that one can talk oneself into enjoying the state of desire and anticipation, but really this is not having shit vs having shit.

I can't help it if some people have no inner resources.

i want some inner resources and i want them RIGHT NOW

scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

I agree with Laurel's post about this. it seems that every time I attain something I invariably become disappointed with the reality of it (even if it lives up to expectations) and my brain fixates on some new thing to desire. but then I've been thinking about buddhist tenets about eliminating desire (tbh I know fuckall about buddhism) and that seems like it'd be pretty rad too. I wish a HOOS was here to school me on buddhism.

having something > wanting something that you'll get at some definite point in the future> wanting something that you'll get someday, but who knows when > wanting something that you've never had and can never get > wanting something that you once had but can never have again (i.e. sucks to be u)

it is better to have love and lost than to have never loved at all~~

that's only ever true depending on proximity

wanting over having. When I was a kid and I managed to scam my mom into buying me a SNES game, I would look at the box all the way home, then delay the moment of finally playing the game - do chores, take a bath, make a snack, etc etc, reading the manual every once in a while the whole time - as long as I could possibly stand it.

A lot of you have come here today with booing in your heart (Z S), Sunday, 9 May 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

^^ I was the kid who opened up all my n64 games in the car on the way home from toys r us. I think the only games which ever lived up to all the hype were the zeldas & marios.

To travel hopefully is better than to arrive. Generally. To eat a Shake Shack burger is better than to spend 7 hours in a plane, though.

Gratification is always temporary and leads to further desire when its over. Desire doesnt necessarily lead to gratification.

Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 9 May 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

therefore gratification is awesome!

Desire is useless without at least the notion of gratification. Gratification works pretty nicely on its own thanks.

they're all women so you'll probably like them (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

desire without gratification = tantalus, gratification without desire = midas

joe, Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

nah, Midas doesn't represent gratification, his story is one of those shoddy sleight-of-hand tricks that's meant to say "careful what you wish for" but really means "careful the person you wish to isn't a mean-spirited twot".

they're all women so you'll probably like them (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

ok i'll try again:

desire without gratification = tantalus, gratification without desire = socks for christmas

joe, Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

if this was on iltmi the answer's "desire" easy imo
