Who will be evicted from BB on Friday?

sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sanchez?

Graham, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh?

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pj

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's def a tough one this week i think. Tim needs to go def tho!

Pinkpanther, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

then tim stands a good chance of going next. leaving kate/jade/alex/jonny as the finalists. two girls in the final. that's a first. in the last week it's an eviction each night tue to fri or something innit?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(i forgot about elizabeth in bb2)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont know if they will get another chance to nominate though.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So what happens then, do they just keep coming up with bizarre tasks?

Pinkpanther, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that if the nation's women still bear a grudge after the Jade incident then it will be PJ, despite some nicer behaviour since then. Kate must stay!

Archel, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would imagine that he has redeemed himself by now.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think he's redeemed himself particularly but Jade has revealed herself to be more of a pain so through her badness he is redeemed. The way PJ reacted to being told that Adele had a girlfriend was ridiculous, all 'really? Well I never knew that. Heh heh heh' in a pervy wa-hey phwoar lesbians that's a bit sexy type way. Yawn yawn.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BOLLOCKS, Kate must go!

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the way PJ said he initially thought Alex was 'eee-oo' was extremely crap. Why didn't he just come out and say he thought he was a screaming bender with no more right to live on gods green earth than a weasel and be done with it?

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They all must go! "big brother residents, channel 4 has run out of money, you all have 10 seconds to leave! thanks for taking part, collect an orange and a big brother t-shirt on your way out"

(did ya see what I did there?)

jel --, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pj has in no way and at no time redeemed himself even for a second: he NEVER fails to dig himself in deeper, on cue like cliches built of precise swiss clockcheese mechanism

i miss his ire

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely living with what he has done is punishment enough?? (i.e. JADE!!)

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come on RickyT, PJ's coyly expressed suspicions about Alex's sexuality hardly translate to thinking "benders" have "no more right to live on gods green earth than a weasel". It was a bit odd though that he was so euphemistic - I thought his "ooo-ee" was code for "mental" at first.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, "screaming bender with no more right to live on gods green earth than a weasel" = Blackadder quote = I do not think PJ literally thinks that. BUT usage of the 'eee-oo' noise instead of just saying 'oh, I thought he might be gay' does suggest to me that PJ's attitude towards queerness might be less than great.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But most men like pj would be of a similar opinion.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard today that one of the female Big Brother inmates was regarded as one of the most hated women in Britain, and was apparently going through a breakdown thanks to being portrayed as "dumb" by the show and the media. a) is she that bad? and b) I guess she'll go, if she hasn't already. We had the Australian one, and a nice but dull guy won.

Andrew, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PJ hasn't expressed an opinion! Sheesh! You can't exactly hang him for homophobia for saying 'ee-oo' instead of 'i thought he might be a hooooooomosexual' (tickle time!). It's quite plausible that he was talking down to the other housemates by saying it, frexample, or perhaps he just likes making a funny noise - and maybe he thought the other housemates would jump on him or insult him if he called Alex a gayist! This demonisation of PJ is ridiculous and when Kate reveals herself to be a giant snake demon she will all LARFF at you before burning you all in flames!!!!

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why don't u like Kate?

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the words 'giant snake demon' not give you a hint?

Cordelia, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No RickyT is right, there was something in the way PJ made his little comment that seemed to imply that the rest of the sentence would've been 'I thought he was a bit eee-ooo and I wasn't too chuffed at the prospect of being stuck in a room / house with him for X number of weeks'.

Yes why don't you like Kate, Sarah?

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a question, requesting someone's reasoning as to why, not a statement!

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it came across like that to me. Even if it isn't suggestive of homophobia it's still a crap way of putting it.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I think PJ's attitudes to queerness are probably unenlightened, but in the literal sense - he doesn't really know anything about it and it's all a bit odd to him but also quite exotic and interesting (cf the Adele reaction). I think PJ's a bit of a throwback to the more harmless end of old pre-irony laddism. Which means I've really got no idea why I like him, but there you go.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1) Her horrible face
2) I see her in every All Bar One and shrieky harridan I have the misfortune to encouter
3) She has far less of a personality than PJ. People cite her 'hilarious impressions' as proof of a personality, bollocks! She's a bloody automaton! People only think she is interesting now because she has finally stopped her brick wall impersonation, well quite frankly I preferred that to her stupid sideshow antics right now
4) Did I mention the 'giant snake demon' thing?

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont hate Kate but I don't like her that much, I think she's boring and I've never seen anything much to countermand that. Yes she's got a lot better since Spencer left but what does it say about her personality that she only bothers to try and become sociable or likeable once her 'special friend' gets the boot?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since when did weasels not have a right to live on god's green earth, r.curtis is such a tired writer...

(andrew from australia, the one you are reffing = jade who has not yet left the BB house, the worry is how she will react to the hating when she goes...) (since this has become a class-rage/outsider-revenge element i suspect it is upping the pro-jade vote, even among ppl who wd not publicly admit to liking her)

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely pj & kate are the male & female versions of the same type of people?

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the more harmless end of old pre-irony laddism" = golly i forget how young you lot are sometimes!!!

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sal = OTM

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sal - yeah I said as much on the other thread. I think PJ is a bit more of a 'team player' though.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no they're not: pj makes no assumptions abt "i am blonde = i am pretty = i don't need to make an effort" (i have only liked kate once she started making an effort, but i think the intra-gender hostility is somewhat justified... ) (sand actually my pj-hatred *is* possibly the equiv so as you were)

blimey mark s proves self secret sexualist shockah

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

doing impressions = proof of NO personality (cf peter sellers)

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OTM ????

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Mark the PJ equivalent is "i am a geezer = i don't need to make an effort". This is also actually a smart play since Jonny is a geezer AND made an effort and has been nominated mercilessly for his pains (though will still probably win).

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OTM = on the money = korrekt

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sal: OTM = "on the money" i.e. "has said what I would have said".

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I prefer my relativist definition!

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Feh well whatever, I give up.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha tom yes the latter part of my post agrees with you, i disagreed on automatic becuz my pj hate is so crisp (i'll rip his felt- tipped flesh ect ect)

viz i momentarily forgot male non-effort-making is not related to looks

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But the whole 'I'm so pretty = I don't have to bother thing' doesn't exist to anywhere near the same extent for men.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are all insane. Kate and PJ aren't alike at all! Good grief. And what is all this 'not making an effort' nonsense - what do you mean? Not making an effort to do what exactly - win? Get on with people? Entertain the BB viewing public?

Also I get annoyed when people say 'X has no personality', well no of course they have a flipping personality, they just don't go round yelling all the time like Jade or whining like Alex.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As they are the same type of person, it is some what disappointing that they are the two up for eviction as they will both be missed as such over say, Tim.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah you just won the argt!! in the moebius-realm of nonsexualism, kate = pj!! hurrah!! (or boo, or whatever)

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They are the male and female equivalents of each other != they are all that alike.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course they are the same type of person, a lad & a ladette if u will!

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And as for attractive women having to make less effort than attractive men, THIS TOO IS NONSENSE! Attractive woman = bimbo says everyone therefore if she wants to be seen as anything else she must make a HUGE effort! Whereas attractive man = oh isn't he lucky all that and good looks too.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is true but it is much harder for men to get by on looks alone

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still don't see how PJ and Kate are 'equivalents' of one another. And don't say they are the same 'type' - what does that mean? Eh? It is daft.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"not making an effort" = using yr [looks/whatever unnamed equiv is it w.men] to avoid having to sort out a situation, viz twinkling yr way out of trouble when you are seven and v.cute...

pj's twinkling is i think presenting his stubbled rump to the alpha male...

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you think Kate is trying to get by on looks alone? I don't. It's not like she prances around looking glam / foxy all the time, she's not really into make up / hair faffing type stuff.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, what I mean is that they are of equal intelligence, equal looks & equal personality. They are both average at everything. Neither excelling of dismally failing.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon Mark S's definition of 'not making an effort' says more about the people who are letting themselves be taken in than the person allegedly not making an effort.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think any of them are relying on their looks, it has gone too far for that. Tim is always very conscious of his looks & now everyone just thinks he is an arse!

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still not buying the Kate / PJ thing. When she went in all red blooded men were (supposed to be) saying 'PHWOAR', I don't think many red blooded women thought much about PJ beyond 'oh look he is a bit like a thumb'. As for intelligence, I dunno, I think so far they have both shown that they can be stupid - but in very different ways - and no great glimmerings of intelligence. Personality wise I think they are very different. Oh well. PJ must go.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that how attractive one is conditions how one behaves to a huge extent. I also think that it's pretty hard to blame anyone for this so Kate's prettiness is a bit of a non-issue unless you simply dislike attractive people on principle.

Also being attractive even on BB does not give you a free pass - Sophie was as conventionally attractive as Kate and the housemates turned very much against her.

Looking back over this BB I actually don't think *any* of the contestants have been that awful - Lynne was out so early it hardly mattered, and Tim, Alison and Jade are the only other ones to have really annoyed me for long periods of time. Most of the rest of it is finding reasons to dislike them within game context.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B-but wasn't Spencer so very 'popular' for 'not making an effort' to wash/speak/move etc? It became his 'thing', and now Kate doesn't have his thing she has her own thing hurrah!

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I find amazing about Alex, I mean, he was bitching about everyone just as much as Adele & nobody has condemned him for it. He does nothing but whinge & him & Tim are now fully locked into the bitching partnership. He is amusing to watch, but he is a pain none the less.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Kate and PJ are equivalents because they're both pretty ordinary people. In real life if I worked with both of them I'm fairly sure I'd quite like them but not enough to make any effort either way.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, but Adele was a whingy bitch monster whereas Alex is an entertaining bitch monster => Alex >> Adele

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The introduction of Tim has pretty much doomed Alex. He was at his best for a couple of weeks when he didn't actually have any single allies and so had to woo a) the group in general, b) the cameras. Back then I was very pro-Alex but now I don't much care what happens to him.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Alex whinges loads!!

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adele should come back into the house. Her big mistake was making her power move too early (ie, she talked too negatively about too many people). If she'd kept it in for a week, she probably would have survived that vote in favor of Jade.

Can I be really racialist for a second and say that as an outsider following on the web (and thus not getting the full force of the personalities involved) I find it REALLY interesting that all of the people of color get booted out the first time they're up for nomination? Sunita had the right idea taking off early.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex whinges in an absurdly precise way which is quite entertaining. But I always liked Adele and was sorry when she got the boot.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the first BB that I haven't got rabidly into and I'm glad, this lot seem rather dull.

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who first said pj looks like a thumb. it's funny cos it's TRUUUUUe! heh.

... and ...

blimey, you turn your back to do a bit of work and the thread explodes. my interest in bb has def waned A LOT this year to the point where i don't think i can claim to really know them anymore. especially with talk of "New" Kate.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But he is also entertaining! Actually, Tom is right, he has become much less fun over the last two weeks.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To be honest I would rather Johnny won over Alex definitely.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex is a 2 faced whinger as he was agreeing with Tim's objections to all the daft carryings on (i.e. towel fight) but then joined in the whole pillow fight thing whereas Tim was at least consistently miserable & grouchy.

It hit me last night that we've got quite a few weeks left to go and I felt suddenly very weary.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But they've been dull every year Chris! This is what I find interesting about it - apart from one or two 'characters' you're ending up making fairly microscopic judgements about people who in real life you wouldn't give a second thought to!

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The people are all very dull this time round, I agree.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

2 weeks after this one Emma.

The thumb thing was originally CAITLIN MORAN writing in the Times, which I read at Isabel's house and then propagated at Steve's housewarming.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just like ILX haha

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, maybe I'm just burned out with the whole BB schtick, though I must say from my limited watchings that Johnny is my favourite. Watching Jade interact with people is like watching a car crash and Tim is a wanker.

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A car crash is more interesting and certainly emotes less feelings of wanting to punch it!

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not making an effort = assumption of free pass

one of the things which trips BB-ers up = the things that work outside don't work inside (nevertheless, not all the things that work outside are obnoxious or lazy or orthodox by definition)

i think emma and i are arguing at cross purposes re "use of looks"

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But 2 very long weeks, Tom.

Apparently this year's BB has had higher ratings than the previous ones and Friday's eviction of Adele was the most watched episode evah (apart from the last 2 finals). Clearly the blander the contestants the higher the fascination levels. Or something.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adele was interesting to watch definitely. It would have been good to keep her in, but there is no way she could have been allowed to win, but seeing her and Alex potentially turn on each other would have been interesting.

Sal, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha all these ppl saying it is DULL haf clearly not read my essay on webcams = the UTOPIA OF NOTHING

in the age of mediated sensation boredom is the last frontier of the real, foax

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or read it and tht it wz rubbish, i guess

mark s, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can anyone name some of these non-bland contestants from the previous series?

The last 2 weeks are always rubbish. But one very big problem this time is that the rich/poor thing has meant no real group dynamics developing at all. So of course most of the housemates seem blander. How many highlights shows this year have even featured much conversation?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan's point is interesting. I can't remember what happened to past black contestants in public votes. Dean and Melanie certainly lasted a long time, but whether this was just cause they didn't get nominated by their housemates for ages I don't know.

But most men like pj would be of a similar opinion.

I don't like men like pj.

N., Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Men like pj like pj, a sophisticated beer.

Ronan, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Men like PJ like BJs. But deny them the morning after.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad's name is Brendan and his middle name is Joseph, so when formal letters come to the house they say BJ before my second name, my friends once saw one of these letters when we were drinking in my kitchen and there was about oh 20 minutes of mockery!

I wish this boring BB week would end so we could have two nominees to really split opinion.

Ronan, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Men like PJ like BJs.

There appears to be a superfluous "like PJ" in that sentence.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn teh eviction is today and dont even know who are the two competing

Chupa-Cabras, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
