The Return of The Superstars

Wow, the whole Sport relief thing had passed me by, until this morning and I read that they had got The Superstars up and running again!! My Mum still has the photo of me and World Superstars champion Brian Jacks (my boyhood hero) somewhere. I am seriously excited by this. Will the stars of today compete with such gusto? Will anyone cheat like (iirc) Jody Scheckter did when he put sun cream on his trainers to help him with the squat thrusts? Will anyone beat Brian Jacks' record in the arm dips?????

yes, yes they will

Yay! I was just listening to the theme tune at the weekend. Do you think they'll use the same one again this time? My favourite was Hooper, the pole vault king.

Sport Relief is such a rubbish idea, almost as bad as Sport Aid which managed to nowhere near have the same impact as Live Aid. Everybody Wants To Run The World (but not in a megalomaniaical way).

Celebrity Boxing with Bob Mortimer and Les Dennis - puh-lease. And I bet most of the "Superstars" will be Super-third-raters after the legendary injury effect that the previous series had on major sports stars.

time to revive pub superstars!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[Delete: "The"]

If they can get Kevin Keegan on a racing bike again, it will be worth it.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the thing Jeff, I always remembered it simply as Superstars, but in the paper this morning it was all "the superstars" I thought I'd forgotten the real title in the mists of time, it would appear not!

Keegan flying over the handlebars of his bike, curly perm scudding through the air like a cirrus cloud, enduring image isn't it?

Mike Hooper the pole vaulter was the only other Brit (ooh, along with hurdler David Hemery I'm just remembering) to win the world title with yer man Jacks.

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course yer man Jacks is a not-too-distant blood relation of a certain pseudonymous sometime (ex?) poster to this board.

Tim, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whaaaaa????????

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and the cast for Saturday's little extravaganza:

Steve Redgrave, Alex Coomber, Martin Offiah, Chris Boardman, Dwight Yorke, Gianluca Vialli, Austin Healey, Stephanie Cook and John Regis

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What are you all going on about? Am I too young or something?

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, naturally, I'll be rooting for the token woman...

Madchen, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Emma, just ignorant of all things sporting ;o)

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ahhh, but Alex Coomber is a bird too, the skeleton luge womang.

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will someone put me out of my ignorant misery? Else I will have to ask real life friends / colleagues (OH NO!).

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought gurl Alixes spelled their name Alix.

Madchen, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me too, this one must be the hexception.

Emma, it's this thing.

chris, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only Alixes spell their name Alix. Alexes spell their name Alex.

RickyT, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Try this link, Emma. If you scroll down to the comments, you'll find an explanation of the original Superstars. Somehow I don't think Terry "Seasons In The Sun" Jacks was ever a contestant though.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma, I'm nearly finished with a partly amusing book about antipathy to sport. It's got some good one-liners (unfortunately spread too thin) to throw at sports nuttahs.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh right, thanks. It sounds shocking though. (Oh and if you are abbreviating Alexandra why on earth would you change the e to an i for no reason? All but 1 girl Alexes I know have an e not an i.)

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was thanks to Jeff but thanks to Alan too though usually when people are talking about sport I am fast asleep so unable to use one- liners.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only know two Alixes, both girls, one of whom has appeared on Blind Date and the other of whom has appeared here. I know no Alexes, even boy ones. I must just be lucky, I guess.

Madchen, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Info on the Superstars? Jacks never won Worlds, the only Brit to do so was Brian Hooper in '82. For more info:

WHo needs Superstars when we have the International King Of Sports. Has anyone else seen this brilliance of TV. The legs tied to gether hurdle. Underwater Shot Put. Running as fast as you can into a crash mat. The sand dive. And more more more.... (Channel 5 Sunday afternoons - with dodgy Dutch tinged V-O).
