laffy taffy!

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

sugar daddy is one of those things you think upon first inspection is soft enough to chew, but it never is. at least jolly ranchers dissolve, but i'm sure there are bits of sugar daddy cemented to my teeth from when i was 7.

I had never heard of Annabelle's BIG HUNK before looking for options for this poll but I am now kind of obsessed with trying it.

also Sugar Daddy ftw

("why are tooth-hostile candies named after overbearing male sexual partners" is possibly a good sub-topic of discussion here)

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

other - dots

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

oh fuck yes, I can't believe I forgot about DOTS

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

seriously dots are a huge player in this field

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

I love Sugar Babies, I guess they don't really count though.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

sugar babies are sugar daddies 4 babies rite?

You could get a pack of 5 Now & Laters from the general store in town for I think A DIME, when I was like 12. Soooo many summer days of riding my bike 5 miles to buy as many as possible. That sharp flavor of cheap fruit-ish chemicals tastes like childhood freedom.

WTF I forgot Sugar Babies too

I totally fail

considering redoing this poll

Unless someone else has actually had experience of a sweet pulling out a tooth, then these are the winner.

if you redo the poll, tootsie rolls should be added

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

but can you make the code automatically sb anyone who votes for them?

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

I, personally, have lost teeth to:

- a Sugar Daddy (shut up)
- a Now and Later
- a Jolly Rancher (the big flat stick one, not the bite-size one they started making to keep kids from pulling their teeth out)

I tried to use a Charleston Chew to pull out a tooth but the tooth wasn't loose enough.

Yes, my childhood did largely revolve around me trying to ditch loose teeth as soon as humanly possible.

HI DERE- not ur archetypal dentalfreak yank, then

more like an honorary brit, really

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

I tried to use a Charleston Chew to pull out a tooth but the tooth wasn't loose enough.

also wtf, did you not have doors, string nor grandmothers?

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

using a door & string: sudden pulling followed by pain

using candy: slow tugging followed by some soreness, but HEY I HAVE CANDY, AWESOME

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

split bieber (s1ocki), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

i once rocked out a tooth on a big chocolate bar

split bieber (s1ocki), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

(despite all this, my first cavity cropped up at age... 27?)

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

if the tooth is loose enough, there's no blood; you are a victim of premature tooth-pulling

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

NB i took the tooth out but finished the candy

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

those terrible Laffy Taffy jokes are seriously a reason to keep living in this crazy, mixed-up world

Cheese? In MY coffee? (It's more likely than you think!) (HI DERE), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

sittin' there with a gun in my mouth and a laffy taffy candy in my other mouth

split bieber (s1ocki), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know from laffy taffy but i am a devoted fan of salt water taffy, wrapped in wax paper, acquired and eaten somewhere on the jersey shore in summertime

acker filk (get bent), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

there was a phase of my life where I was eating so much salt water taffy that it was probably dangerous for my health

iatee, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

pretty sure I got 7 cavities at once when my parents bought a 2 lb bag of jelly bellies when I was 10

I ate this stuff for a whole summer circa 1964. I would take it over a Sugar Daddy every day of the week.

Aimless, Friday, 14 May 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

^ never had it but was my mom's favorite candy

These always were tempting, but they would pull my jaw entirely out of shape and I'd swear them off again.

Aimless, Friday, 14 May 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

Milk duds otm. Saw one of those bad boys pull out my husband's wisdom tooth while watching "Last Samurai" at the movie theater. Also: the most exciting thing that happened during that snoozefest.

Okay, I voted for Charleston Chew, but certainly I can't be the only person who remembers the now-defunct Tangy Taffy? (HI DERE, I used to buy it all the time at Dueber's!)

I am the hugest fan of Big Hunk bars! Probably the #1 fan. I recommend HI DERE and all other curious parties try them ASAP. I like all of Anabelle's mildly off-center candy bar offerings. They also have great, classic graphic design.

best childhood memory of now and laters. extra point for being one of those phrases that as a kid was basically conflated into one word in my mind (nowanlater). i guess partially because it was nonsense anyway - were you really expected to save some for later? maybe they figured by the time you suffered through the three layers of paper and plastic or whatever these things were packaged in it would be "later" anyway.

honorable mention: smushing a bunch of starbursts together into a large ball and eating it whole.

dishonorable mention: mary janes. most disappointing trick or treat offering. seriously i'll take the box of raisins ffs.

Billy Crystals (another al3x), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

Not my favorites, but #1 Jujubees, followed closely by #2 Sugar Daddy are most effective candy teeth-extraction methods by MILES
