I went through a quite serious Sailor Moon phase some years ago; it occurred to me a few weeks back that my enjoyment of Buffy is in so many senses exactly parallel. Why do I like allegorical tales in which "teenage girls versus monsters" maps onto "teenage girls versus complexities of responsibility and sexuality?"

(Thanks, Chupa, for reminding me of this urgent and key topic of discussion.)

This show had one of the worst theme songs ever. I watched it for about three weeks because I thought it was just out-and-out hilarious. Then I discovered a website that took it seriously and described all of these cataclysmic deaths that were coming up later in the series and I lost interest.

You are seriously disappointing me, Dan. (a) I love the Sailor Moon theme and even interpolated it into a song I was recording during my Sailor Moon phase. (b) But I wasn't beholden to it, or anything, as around this same period I wrote and recorded a new Sailor Moon theme. (c) It's possibly the best thing I've ever recorded: it sounds like Bjork working with Orbital. (d) What was so amazing about Sailor Moon was the crushing mythological drama it often achieved, what with the cataclysmic deaths and such. (e) It had one of the best unraveling-backstories I've ever encountered. (f) I am TuxedoMask.

(nabisco please please send your sailor moon theme for the ilx comp, as my song has the lyrics of a manga cartoon)

I like Sailor Moon, it's one of those cartoons that you can just watch, nowhere near as imcomprehensible as Gundam Wing.

The main theme of Sailor Moon is that Serena is a complete spaz.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Complete spazz / inner moon princess, Dan: her adolescent awkwardness contains a grace and nobility that she must nurture until it blossoms. The peak moments are obviously when she spazzes out or breaks down in despair and cries that she can't handle it: the Sailor Scouts support her but it's always incumbent upon her to get up with the hmmphy determined-Serena look on her face and stand tall against the challenge.

Sailor Moon = the anti-Buffy Sailor Mercury = Willow Sailor Jupiter = Xander Sailor Mars = Faith Sailor Venus = Anya Rini = Dawn TuxedoMask = Angel

Buffy/Moon fans, the above is URGENT AND KEY: please comment or revise.

Funny in a painful kind of way. I have to laugh at the outfits every time.

Ill be sorry to dissapoint, n----h but i dont really watch Sailor Moon, my sister does. Though the theme RAWKS and teh few times i watched it was ok but the only anime i could ever watch seriously was Evangelion. I remebered i have some nerd friends taht buy the mangá, i read one time in school and it was way better tahn the cartoon

Well this thread inspired me to borrow the whole colection from Sapo when school comes back. I cant watch it for the same reason i dont watch PPG no more, i have to stand my sister watching it too

*sigh* I suppose it's up to me to defend Nabisco's phase here, since no one else will. I had a phase too but I still think the show's great even though the fanaticism's gone. The drama and especially the character interactions are wonderful. Can't defend that theme song though... "Never running from a real fight?"

The first big Sailor Moon fan I knew is in my opinion a total pervert about Japanese schoolgirls, which has always made me think of it with suspicion.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud. It was meant for pre-teen girls pure and simple, there are no hidden deep meanings for adults in it, other than the ones you create for yourself.

Death is less taboo in Japan - it only seems daring and sophisticated compared to American cartoons. And too much of the episodes were devoted to Monster-of-the-week action. Still, that didn't keep me watching during my brief phase, long, long ago.
