Contestants in Trig Brother had to think of an ILE/M thread topic for in-pub conversation. This was Carsmile Steve's.

Well, I'm not going to take the bait and say 'oxymoronic', I'll leave that to other flame-catchers

I was thinking more along the lines of: a tent in the amazon (dot com) with fully equiped digital connection set up. You know, iBOOK ("jungle pattern of course") with internet connection and a camera so all the folks back home can have a good laugh there's not toilet. Actually I don't understand the idea at all. Progressive ruralism?!?

Maybe, it's where farmers form rock bands that play 25 long songs with titles like "Plough the Field, the Sheep are Burning"?

Farmyard Gang "The sheep The Sheep The Sheep Are on Fire"

FWIW I rarely use the phrase now - hearing of Dominic Lawson's liking for XTC was the kicker, because it cut through my previous ideological certainties.

But my original (loose) definition of the phrase: to live in / like non-metropolitan area while being politically left-wing and culturally forward-thinking.

You should visit Vermont or Oregon sometime, Robin. I think you'd like it. (Seriously)

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind ...

I like the idea of progressive ruralism/pastoral technology but I really doubt I like the reality of living that dream.

It might ruin yer Prada jacket, ey? ;-) I wonder what the animal would do if you play some Boredoms or DJ Assault. They probably die of shock!

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This woman looks right through me! :) But you're wrong about the animals, I would be a futuristic Orpheus playing Boredoms from my CD- man and the animals would all come out of hiding and peacefully lie in front of me.

It's not like whoever wanted to take Merzbow and Swans to a island on ILM. In a day all the trees and plants would be dead, the animals all fled into the ocean. You would be sitting on a black lifeless island.

And chances of someone taking you on their ship are minimal. Unless of course Dylan Nyoukis and Thurston Moore are on the boat. hah!

Does the answer lie in that book called (?) Town & Country, ed. Anthony Barnett and - oh, dear - Roger Scruton?

What a pair.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox,

I wouldn't trust anything on the countryside involving Scruton, hunting fetishist and closet laptop-burner that he is, though I know you know this already.
