actually what i mean is that this show is great yet indefensible

Nhex, Monday, 17 May 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

What makes this show great is the very thing that makes it indefensible!

Mordy, Monday, 17 May 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

A much more satisfying Arrested Development reunion than Sit Down Shut Up, that's for damn sure.

Was anyone else kind of disappointed they didn't get more mileage out of Chris Parnell, though?

was kind of amazed at how funny i thought the bomb-defusing scene on the blimp in the first season was. it's really drawn out in a way i didn't really expect from FLASHY CYNICAL QUICK-CUTTING CARTOON SHOW #243 (not that this show isn't just fine at being that too, when it is). plus it is Actually Suspenseful!

so yeah excited for this, also it is nifty-looking.

when i watch this show i get the same feeling i do when i watch rob dyrdek's fantasy factory, where i am constantly expecting the next joke to be the one where to make me realize what a bad show it is. but i never do.

lol @ this

We did have to tweak the season opener. The girl was originally 14 because I did a bunch of Wikipedia research and found out that that is the age of consent in Germany. They said they didn’t care where it was the age of consent, it wasn’t the age of consent on FX. The only other one was Archer threw an infant, really a newborn, to disarm a villain. They said that was going a little too far. The baby was going to slam into the guy’s chest, which I’m sure is terrible for a baby.

i feel like with heavily dialogue-driven comedies, especially these animated adult swim-type shows, the rhythm of the dialogue is really important. and i really like the rhythms of Home Movies or Venture Bros, but the rhythm of the dialogue on these Adam Reed shows is really exhausting and irritating to me. now and then they do make me laugh really hard, but half the time i'm just tuning out or feeling actively annoyed by the way the characters are hectoring each other.

feels like heelys are racing up my spine (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

a show starring H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell and Judy Greer has a right to be way better than this imo

absolutely steen hooses (some dude), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

it's pretty funny. one of the better animated shows currently running (tho maybe not as good as venture bros, at least as good as bob's burgers)

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

it's funny, and it's been growing on me this season because my wife really likes it, but Bob's Burgers is much more my speed. even Sealab i dug more (although Frisky Dingo was the worst shit ever).

absolutely steen hooses (some dude), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

i don't hate frisky dingo, and my brother swears by it (he actually thinks it's funnier than archer). sealab was good when it was really weird (the WHAT episode in particular was a highlight). the best of these imho of recent memory are venture bros, the last season of metalocolypse, moral orel. frankenhole isn't as good as moral orel which is really a special show. so brilliant. um -- maybe we should poll all these. some big american animation of the last eight years poll?

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, I was thinking that a full old-style ILX animation poll could be fun too.

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

well, we did kinda do that:

BEST ADULT SWIM ORIGINAL PROGRAM
WORST ADULT SWIM ORIGINAL PROGRAM

also the end-of-decade TV poll kind of had a de facto animated top 10 within it

absolutely steen hooses (some dude), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

Moral Orel got robbed!

Frisky Dingo is great, Frankenhole is great, Archer is great, Moral Orel is great in certain dosages, Venture Brothers is all time, Metalocalypse is great, Home Movies is all time, Sealab is great, Bob's Burgers is bleh.

OK so if the Cheryl becomes a country singer thing is true (which is the bit I thought was most trolly-sounding!) then I guess the rest of the "what happens to ISIS" bit is too (I dont wanna spoil it.. but its been spoken of in interviews)

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 00:23 (eleven years ago)

cheryl performed a fine rendition of 'baby please don't go' in this last ep

The episode has already aired!

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

yeah, I watched it Monday night... if you've heard rumors about where they're going with season 5, they seem to be true. the first episode isn't really a very good episode... it just sets up season 5. a third of the episode is like a reverse clip show.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:25 (eleven years ago)

...or IS IT!?

OK I just saw it, and that was aamaaaaaaziiiiiinnnnggg. But I'm left wondering if that whole storyline, with the montage, is some dream sequence. Hm. Be interesing to see how next week pans out. For some reason my instincts are sniffing red herring.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:35 (eleven years ago)

Mainly because of the montage!

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:36 (eleven years ago)

To wit: at the end of S4, they had to escape from underwater and Archer had to be revived afterwards cos he'd been unconcious. I mean... it could work...

ian, Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)

srsly this has become one of my favorite comedy shows. i have rewatched the first three seasons multiple times now, whenever i can't figure out what else to watch.

ian, Thursday, 16 January 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)

ian - check out justanimedubbed.tv if you dont want to wait. They have all of S4, as far as I know (the only bits they seem to be missing is "arch of darkness" storyline for some odd reason).

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 16 January 2014 23:11 (eleven years ago)

arch of darkness was in season 3, no?

Hahah yeah that made me do a doubletake.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 02:19 (eleven years ago)

lol at you guys thinking Archer's montage of fantasy is in any way a reflection of the rest of the season

mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 03:51 (eleven years ago)

I mean, lol at me if they do it, but I thought it was a fun one-off gag. Completely possible they do something with the cocaine sale angle, but I doubt it's that

mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 03:52 (eleven years ago)

Yeah thats what I was saying. I think Reed has red-herringed everyone, and it was just thatone episode. Cmon the start was a blatant dream sequence!

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 03:57 (eleven years ago)

Mind u, them as drug runners would fit fine with the overall feel of the show anyway.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 03:58 (eleven years ago)

even if it's an actual trailer, as they're claiming it is, when the hell have Archer's daydreams been anything close to reality? not sure about that as a framing device

mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 04:00 (eleven years ago)

Wait, who is claiming the whole episode is a trailer?

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 05:13 (eleven years ago)

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 23 January 2014 02:03 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

I just finished watching season 6, this series has gone kinda soft, hasn't it? But I like it, they couldn't have the kept the whole ultra-cynical approach going without sacrificing character growth, and looks like they do actually want the characters (well, at least Archer and Lana) to evolve. Which I think is the right choice, as funny as the first couple of seasons were, I'm not sure if I'd wanted to watch those same jerkasses for four seasons more.

I found the whole Archer/Lana/AJ situation surprisingly touching, but I don't think they can stretch it much more, so I'm kinda hoping season 7 will be the last one. The whole thing is like Rachel/Ross in Friends (right down to them having a kid without being in a relationship), but if Friends thought us anything, is that you can't milk a "will they or won't they?" situation for years without it getting extremely tedious. Also, while the other characters have settled into niches of their own and are still funny, they should get their own character development too, like Archer and Lana got. I guess the episode with Pam's sister's wedding was going into that direction, but I'd like more of that.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 1 September 2015 07:48 (ten years ago)

I got about halfway thru season 6 and stopped keeping up, mainly cos my other half, rather bafflingly, HATES this show. He loves crude cartoon shows like Bojack and whtnot, so I honestly dont get it, but eh.

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Wednesday, 2 September 2015 01:10 (ten years ago)

That's kinda funny, considering that season 6 is closer to BoJack than any of the previous seasons (in that it isn't all cynical black humour anymore, and some of the asshole characters are actually showing some personal growth).

Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 06:19 (ten years ago)

He said he found the humour puerile. Its baffling, he loves puerile humour.

Archer: Danger Island

This season of the animated spy comedy finds Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) as a semi-functioning alcoholic seaplane pilot — a lush on the lush South Pacific island of Mitimotu. It’s 1939, and while the rest of the world is concerned about the looming Second World War, Archer is concerned only with who’s buying his next drink. Along with his trusty co-pilot/sidekick Pam (Amber Nash), Archer must navigate quicksand, cannibals, super-intelligent monkeys, poison darts and pirates in this dangerous and mysterious land.

So, drawing on Casablanca, Only Angels Have Wings, and Panama Lady?
