"I don't know anyone named Kyle"

A line from En Vogue's Riddle song. I don't know anyone named Kyle either. Except that chap from Twin Peaks - and he obv doesn't count because I don't REALLY know him because he's a a tiny figure on a screen.

If I have a daughter, I'll probably name it Dolores. But Isabeau also seems a nice name. How did/do you decide the name of your (future) children? Do you know the story behind your name?

nathalie, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nathalie > The woman who was staying next to my mom in the hospital room suggested Nathalie. So instead of Dolores, they picked that name.

nathalie, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned was chosen because it was short and couldn't be made into a nickname (so logically my friends extended it instead). Seth was going to be my name if Ned hadn't flown.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nedseth?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard odder.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i knew a guy in college named ned who we called "silent r." as in there's a silent r, between the e and the d.

wow, were we cool.

drake, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, see, the r often gets pronounced in my case. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Our best college names for people were "The Peon" (because of an unfortunate urination incident this girl experienced during a sexual encounter that she decided to describe to her friends in lurid detail at the top of her lungs in the dining hall) and "Bo" (because this guy's body odor subsumed his personality). I was frequently called "Malcolm" because there was a guy in my dorm about my height with a goatee who looked nothing like me, yet people confused us all the time. (Actually, I also got called "Mike" and "Kendall". It was frustrating yet funny because none of us looked anything alike AND the dorm was one of the smaller ones on campus, so you'd think people would be able to keep track of everyone.)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My name was chosen because my parents thought it sounded nice. Little did they know! My mom had a friend with that name too.

I will name my future children:
Lydia
Anna
Thor
Sebastian
Anders, Andrew, or some variation
Adam, Peter, or other calm Biblical names

Maria, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

#1 Sam. #2 Jo. It's easiest if you choose unisex names. As I had a vasectomy about five years ago, it's entirely academic.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nath, I have a sister named Dolores and she hates her name! She refuses to be nicknamed Dolly, or even Dol. I have another sister named Ruby, some friend of my Dad's named her. Her middle name is Nell, which I like also. My other sister is called Grace, I think she came off best in the name stakes.

Obv. my parents wer hippies, and that's how I got mine. There is family chit chat of me being named 'Lola' for about five minutes or so when I was first born.

I'm not having any kids, but if I was going too I like the name 'Korin' (girl).

rainy, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blimey rainy i nevah knew u had sisters, let alone such an army! i always tht it was you on yr ownio!!

Graham, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainy I think you and Ruby got the prettiest names.

Maria, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know of a child called Foxaxle. His brother is called William. I anticipate family arguments.

Matt, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone seen the Seinfeld episode about the name Dolores? If so, then you probably know better than to name a child Dolores.

Lindsey B, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad wanted tyo call me Afolstone (sp?)...fortunately common sense prevailed.

jel --, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My parents called me Sarah because they thought it could not be shortened. WOT, shout the ENTIRE LEAGUES of everyone else in the three years surrounding my date of birth called 'Sez', 'Sezah', 'Sezzle'... and then they proceeded to call me a shortened form of my middle name all the time ANYWAY!! Gar!! I would prefer my middle name, at least not everyone would bloody have it...

Sarah, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what is your middle name?

jel --, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, my work email goes Clarke, Sarah J (SAS) - so there's the initial for you... the winner gets a PRIZE!

Sarah, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bollocks, I wish I hadn't said that, I don't want my last name popping up. Could someone delete that post if they've got a spare minute/can be arsed? I'll be wiling to buy you a pint.

Sarah, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Sarah, your last name IS on NYLPM probably interenet crepe planing to stalk you already knows it

Chupa-Cabras, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a shortened form of my middle name all the time ANYWAY!! Gar!!

Is it Gareth?

Graham, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also is Nathalie a closet Cranberries Mentalist stalker fan?
Mentalist, maybe, but def not a Cranberries fan! :-)

nathalie, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is not Gareth. And my last name has been taken off NYLPM as well.

Sarah, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my parents gave me my name (the FULL version innit) so that when i grew up i could choose whichever shortening of it i liked. then they started calling me katie and everyone has called me that ever since. i wanted to become kate when i was at Uni but there was already another kate in my class and also a gurl on my corridor called kate who ended up becoming one of my best friends... so katie it stayed.

katie, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it jessica?

jel --, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DG, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know a girl named Sarah Jane but her last name has no E on the end. Other than that your names would be the same though if your middle name was Jane, so I declare it thus.

Maria, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my best friends from high school is named Kyle. He's a Lutheran pastor and super fun.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i know everyone called kyle

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I know only one Kyle and he's the boyfriend of my friend Courtney.

My name would've been Robin Renee were I born a girl. My parents decided on Ian Nicholas because A) it was the seventh most popular name in Scotland at the time and B) it paid tribute to Ian McCulloch, Ian Astbury, and Nick Rhodes.

emilys., Wednesday, 19 December 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

Did all of the guys who were named Trip in the 80s change their names when they grew up?

flared bass (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 12:11 (thirteen years ago)

Probably not: if you were John Smith III and your preppy parents Mary and John Smith, Jr were being cute, you'd be Trip - it's short for 'triple'.

rihanna, will you ever win? (suzy), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 13:01 (thirteen years ago)

The more I know!

flared bass (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)
