Does the as-yet untold future of forensic science impact your decision to commit crimes today?

You see a lot of stories like this these days:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-county/bs-md-co-bolling-sentence-20100520,0,2545386.story

in which somebody gets collared for something based on DNA evidence that they probably thought they were off the hook for long ago. And I start thinking: well, if these guys were committing crimes without knowledge that their DNA could be used against them, what kind of evidence will crimefighters of the future have access to that will help them collar the criminals of today?

Like, looking at my Google Maps satellite view, will police departments one day have access to the like, sordid outtakes from this and other satellite mapping technology? What else might police be able to use in the future that people aren't really considering yet?

I dunno, it's not like it would be the only thing keeping me from doin' a murder or knocking over a gas station. Just something that comes to mind when I read stories like this.

Oh word. I don't even watch a lot of crime drama tv these days. Didn't realize this was a thing.

Whooooops at being culturally illiterate.

There will be a machine that just tells brainstorming detectives if they're getting warmer or colder imo

Gas analysis of crime scenes will enable detectives to identify individuals by their unique fart signature.

Anyone ever read this? It deals with an absolutely infallible lie detector and its effect on crime and human society:

I guess for copraphiles this is gonna be awesome (Pancakes Hackman), Friday, 21 May 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

Really, though, while knowing next to nothing about the "future of forensic science", I would assume that it'll have to do with tracking internet usage. Like, they can already do that, but I'm talking about authorities gradually attaining greater access to records, less red tape, etc, through executive orders and supreme court decisions.

Basically, just book your murders in advance so as not to cause unnecessary record duplication.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

detective: "Can you enhance that image?"
technician: "No, because it's a FRICKIN' 320x240 JPG FROM A WEBCAM!!!"

Tom Cruise will come to your house, and if that's not a fucking deterrent well you're beyond help.

xpost -- then the detective starts complaining about how Harrison Ford had this special camera in Blade Runner and...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

I saw an episode of Numb3rs where they opened up a hard drive (not in a clean room, just a regular office of course), then waved a pen with a blue LED over the platter stack, and this magically recovered all the files. Then they took a JPG and kept zooming in and zooming in to get a car number plate.

Like you don't do that every day.

Surely the major thing is just digitalized CCTV records? Like, being able to look at all the surrounding streets for any place at any given time, to see if someone's alibi holds water?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

xxp well it's not every day, because the super-secret RaggettCam is often offline for some reason...

if we're really talking about futuroscifi stuff, then yeah, mind reading will be the big one. like literally putting you into a giant magnet and reading your memory.
