Is this a fad? A friend of a friend was attempting this too.

She swapped the paperclip for something of some actual value that her mother didn't want any more (this seems kind of cheating, but anyway), and then traded this for a large item of furniture which she couldn't get rid of and last heard was still cluttering up her flat.
