The trailer shows a sombre funeral presided over by voice of Big Brother Marcus Bentley, and attended by former Housemates loved and loathed, as they bid fond farewell to the show that made them household names. But, as the diary room chair is lowered into the ground the scene erupts into a colourful mardi gras as the true nature of the show is celebrated with a joyful explosion of confetti, carnival music and dancing.
OK, breaking with tradition slightly, with the first Joy Division album title instead of a seemingly inappropriate New Order one, one last time around the funfair and then away...

Big Brother bosses confirm that there will be between 80 and 90 hopeful housemates on launch night.
Blimey!
"We've got our shortlist of people coming down on launch night," he said. "There will probably be around 80 or 90 people. They are all coming down to join in this last carnival which is Big Brother. "None of them will know whether or not they have been picked. To be honest, not even we know all of them yet. Some of them we do, some we don't."He continued: "Big Brother still makes the decision on who goes in the house, like it has always done. You will just see the moment when they find out who enters this wonderful, beautiful house. There will be between 12 to 14 housemates. I'm being truthful, we genuinely don't know at this point how many. We haven't finished selecting yet, we are just trying to get the mix right."Explaining the physical setup on Wednesday night, he said: "They will still walk in individually and get their own walk into the house. They are just not pulling up in cars, getting booed or cheered. We are doing it in a slightly different way."They will be outside. On the big staging outside. Davina will be there. The big crowd will be there. They will all be there in the middle with their name badges on. Big Brother will announce who is going in the house, then you'll see their face as they start screaming, gibbering or running away madly from it. Who knows?"

Given this clashes with the start of the World Cup, I don't even expect to go through my usual "watch for a week out of curiosity before getting bored" and I suspect that media coverage will be lower than it's ever been.
― Matt DC, Monday, 7 June 2010 11:29 (fifteen years ago)
The tabloids and celeb magazines pretty much ignored BB last year as well.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 7 June 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah when the only magazines that give a shit about BB are Nuts and Zoo you know it's dead in the water.
― Matt DC, Monday, 7 June 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)
Nuts/Zoo coverage was pretty much centred on Sophie, as she had already been in both magazines before BB. Unless there's a housemate this year in a similar situation, the only media coverage outside C4/E4 might a resurgence of interest from the broadsheets and TV arts/critic programmes.

This just in:
80 housemates to choose from today, a large number go in.
The show normal runs for 11 weeks, the winer gets the cheque and waits for their final eviction. This never happens..
instead, the show continues with housemates past (celeb and normal) joining the house. Until the end.

Right, here is the mission statement with regard to this thread, and the threads in past years.
There are a great many dedicated "big brother" forums, most are populated by fanaticists.
This is the place for people who are interested, but have a life. Plus, perspective. And, in past years, a few well informed insiders.
Am I 'excited' by this? No, not really. Will I watch? sure. Is Big Brother still important?
Well, that's a big question, but one point of view: You will never know how many sorts of people even exist without watching how they react to each other, to the controlling influence of a 'benign' authority figure and to external events, as you will here.
I think Gigli said it best when he sang "On with the Motley"

Brand also clearly watched and formed his own opinions about the housemates, and was fiercely defensive and often supportive of even the "hated" ones. George Lamb is a fucking insult of a replacement.

― Andy Cole (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
That BB7 BBLB episode was the same day that Nikki went back into the house, and Dermot's analysis of what that meant for her/Pete/the other housemates/the public was just so OTM that it was clear he'd been following the show very closely. Rather than just turning up at the studio and being given a two page summary.

BBBM was awesome when he was on it.
You know that Family Guy episode when Peter becomes obsessed with Surfin' Bird and at one point is reading the paper, and says to Brian "This is curious. I seen no mention of an ornothological phenomena I was convinced all readers were aware of. In fact I was certain the entire population understood the taxonomical nature of the avian relationship. <ridiculously long pause, with knowing looks> Everybody knows about the bird, don't you know that the bird is the word..."?
Every night Brand would do the same joke before the break about pulling down his trousers and pants (with actions), wanking his dinkle to a semi and remonstrating with the celebrity involved in the anecdote. The joke itself was SO WEAK but the journey to the punchline was incredible.
― It would have been better with burger sauce (aldo), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
Nikki's hair is all wrong, btw, but I do love her dress. It doesn't suit her, like, but I really like it.

― trollin' with the homies (suzy), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
xxp I think that a lot of the latter problems with Brand's career can be traced to him not understanding what made that joke funny. As you say, it was the journey to the punchline, but for some reason Brand came to the conclusion that it was him saying "oooooooh my dinkle!". And his career's suffered ever since.

Poor Victor and Nikki, although I have nothing against Brian so good for him, may he develop a career again.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 11 September 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
worst thing about lamb is his bored tone of voice, a disgusted supercilious sneer at the idea anyone listening to him go on about this dross. nothing likeable about him at all, used to love bblb but couldn't watch it once that charmless fuckwit became involved.
pretty gutted about UBB winner tbh, such an obvious boring choice. i always found brian watchable in a dumbed-down mainstream itv chatshow way and it was important for bb to have that, but the best parts always came out of left-wtf-field, cf: previous-but-one clip, brian belou's babe pig in the city ramblings and glyn's egg song. people bounced off brian well (nadia pmt chat) and he's undoubtedly a lovely guy to know but he hasn't had any memorable tv moments of his own making (zero in this thread so far or on all the best of bb shows/articles). i got the most out of bb when it was showing the maddest moments of extreme personalities whereas brian is just a nice normal chap being nice and normal.
― NI, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think brian was that boring the awkward stuff with josh was brian's choice and making and he said last night that in the ubb he'd consciously decided not to be abrasive and I have no problem with that and he did it well meanwhile the nadia pmt chat was brian bouncing off of nikki not vice versa also his reaction to makosi suggesting lindsay lohan was dead was the same
on george lamb though I could not agree more dermot always seemed to really engage and take things seriously within the show where george lamb always seems to laughing at housemates and viewers and the whole show in an ugly way what a cunt
― conrad, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)
as great as later bbs still could be and were the experience for me was v definitely impacted by the departure of dermot (I didn't watch bblb the last few years as it became useless and annoying) and bbbm becoming even more crude and inane and crap over the years (was never that great but these last couple of years were just awful) and the disappearance of bbbb (big brain - a wee bit rubbish but did add some small different dimension) and the diary room uncut
this is what I always say though
― conrad, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah good point, just watched the davina goodbye show and was reminded of this one.
that goodbye show must have been made on a budget of 50p though, so cheap and shitty. pete burns's godawful rendering of YSMRR topped it off perfectly. it did make me want to see an hour long highlights show of each series though, so many great moments that need rediscovering
― NI, Monday, 13 September 2010 09:09 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, enjoyed the closedown with the echoey quotes: comprendez? i could kill you with these two fingers, etc. I wish they'd included "there's a new type of music taking over the world and it's called indie" though.
Still, I never have to see Kinga and the bottle or George Galloway's cat thing ever again.

apparently there were dvds released for the first 4 series. think s4 was a giveaway with the sun. can only find the s1 dvd on torrent sites though. the new s1-11 highlights dvd is meant to be rubbish - a 45 min highlight show and 3 full episodes (two from s9 and one from s11, weirdly). but yeah, really need reminding why i hated people like sezer, jason, tim so so much. there could be a great 60-90 min summing up doc of each series, following the basic narrative + all the best chuckles.
