Inland Empire is the worst Lynch feature film I've seen, and I've seen them all except for Dune.

Tuomas, Friday, 28 May 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, now that I think of it, I've seen all Lynch movies (except for aforementioned Dune) at the cinema. Can't imagine how boring Inland Empire would be on video, when you can't even submerge in the pretty visuals and cool music, you'll just have to sit through the endless, pointless plot.

But Lost Highway is right there on the list!

Attention please, a child has been lost in the tunnel of goats. (James Morrison), Thursday, 3 June 2010 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, and it's much better than IE. As good as an actor as Laura Dern is, I much prefer a movie with some kind of a plot and structure to her wandering endlessly through various random scenes, which takes at least 50% of the Inland Empire. (And at 3 hours it's too long anyway.)

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 June 2010 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

lost highway is the one of these that i'd likely watch & enjoy most often, so that

2) inland empire -- massive, but demands so much
3) shallow grave -- wouldn't call it great, but i enjoyed it quite a bit
4) volver -- not bad, but far from my favorite almodovar
5) last tango in paris -- just don't care for it, admirable but dull

haven't seen the counterfeiters

a) so rong

b) i remember watching IE and thinking, "this will never work outside the theater." for one thing, it seemed way too fucking murky. as in: impossible-to-see anything murky. but i enjoyed it a hell of a lot on rewatch, even on a relatively small laptop screen. all it took was attention, total darkness and a nice pair of headphones.

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Thursday, 3 June 2010 06:56 (fifteen years ago)

Pardon moi for saying this, but some of you have poor taste in cinema. Last Tango in Paris is a cinematic landmark. None of the other in that list are even remotely close. Even if it doesn't fit your so-called tastes, it's still light years better than anything else in the poll. It's like saying you don't care for Francis Bacon paintings, just because they don't really do it for you. Shit, the cinematography and soundtrack alone make it better than those other films. Now, I'm not saying that those other films aren't wonderful, because I like all of them myself, and Bertolucci has put out some sub-standard bullcrap in his career, but the Tango is a pinnacle. Has it become an uncool relic now? If so, then fuck you!

The Perfect Weapon 2, Thursday, 3 June 2010 07:32 (fifteen years ago)

1. Last Tango in Paris (Bertolucci, 1972) somewhat silly and the critical praise is ridic but i still enjoyed it
2. Volver (Almodóvar, 2006) usually hate almodovar but this was a dece film
3. Inland Empire (Lynch, 2006) too many lynch tropes but still quite interesting
4. Shallow Grave (Boyle, 1994) very minor
5. Lost Highway (Lynch, 1997) the bill pullman part is terrible and so incoherent that it ruins the film
6. The Counterfeiters (Ruzowitzky, 2007) nazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzis = OSCAR

abanana, Thursday, 3 June 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

1 - Volver (Almodóvar, 2006)

"good taste" != affection for landmarks. and francis bacon provides a poor defense of your argument. I would hardly expect everyone with good taste (or interesting taste, or intelligent taste, or tasteful taste, or wtf are you trying to say, anyway?) to like bacon. his work can be rather brutal.

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Thursday, 3 June 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

Comes down to how you define "like"...

Mark G, Thursday, 3 June 2010 10:24 (fifteen years ago)

"Last Tango," as noted on the "Films You Never Finished" thread, I actually walked out of. (Second half of a double feature at the repertory theater, long night, bad mood, Brando's method acting/grunting...) I'm sure it's a cinematic landmark, and I'm probably due for a re-viewing, but I honestly don't relish the thought.

Landmark, masterpiece, call it what you like. Affection for the great works is no crime. Brando and Bertolucci actually paid visits to a museum in Paris and studied Bacon paintings off the set. Bacon paintings are used in the opening title sequence as well. It's a Baconian film to the core. By the way, the original story was supposed to be an affair between two men, but the studios were not even about to let that film be made.

Sure, Last Tango has flaws and I see how some could think its "silly". Like what you like. The world would be boring if we all liked the same things.

I'm just saying I'll defend that film as one of the best ever made.

The Perfect Weapon 2, Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

there was nothing in that movie for me to grab onto, what can I say. it was boring and aimless and laughable

i'm on record thinking Last Tango is bullshit, but the brando monologues in it are master classes imo, so that elevates it over Lost Highway which is really not worth the trouble.

i'm betting if i saw the almodovar i'd have it at 1.

i am tired of explaining why i think IE is so good, so im just not going to do it again because its just going to descend into "if you dont like it you are a big doo doo head" territory quickly. its not an easy movie to quantify imo, basically if it worked for you, it worked, and if it didnt, you are stupid it didn't.

gated community of Mordor (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 June 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

not at all surprised by the IE love - i loved it. am surprised by the harsh dismissals of lost highway. midsection wanders, but the first 45 min or so are absolutely terrifying, and the climax is brilliant. agree that it anticipates IE in many ways, but disagree that its an inferior film. not as obvious a "masterpiece", but more accessible & conventionally entertaining - these are legit virtues.

I have to adamantly dispute the results of this poll on principle alone. David Lynch at 1 and 2? Even more predictable and boring than my defense of "landmark cinema." Lynch wishes he could've ever cast the late great Brando in one of his films. I'll gladly take this earnest defeat as a symbolic victory of good taste over depraved yet somehow easy agreement. Simply because I'm in the minority I feel justified. A crime has been committed on this forum, and I shall laugh about it from this point on. I actually like all these movies, but this is just too hilarious!

All I have to say is this -- David Lynch plays a shitty guitar.
