chick pea vs lentil

am0n, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

Went for the first option assuming that includes French beans.

Have got a couple of packets of weird things that I haven't ever gotten around to growing: lablabs and asparagus peas. Dunno what either of those are actually like for eating.

Vision Creation Mansun (NickB), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

Also: soya beans!

Vision Creation Mansun (NickB), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, now I'm thinking of how great Puy lentils are.

Vision Creation Mansun (NickB), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

great thread title!

just sayin, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

chick pea v. lentil v. underrated broad bean (but you couldn't really eat 'em every day) vs. pinto in my opinion but that first grouping is kinda crazy - kidney & pinto & navy all taste real different and you use 'em in pretty different ways

then again, my first favorite was the black-eyed pea, and it's still a big favorite but I only know three ways to prepare it (in hoppin' john; mashed, as part of a really outstanding dip; and mashed & breaded & fried as a croquette/patty) and really only have 'em once or twice a year

also there's no black beans in here, I think there's a large chunk of the world who joins me in asking wtf

underrated broad beans I wouldn't eat every day

iatee, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

voted chickpea, I mean cmon

iatee, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

black bean falls under the first one

am0n, Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

Phaseolus vulgaris!

afrika spambotaa and the hulu nation (m bison), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

afrika spambotaa and the hulu nation (m bison), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

lentils are my all-time but lately i've been crushing on sprouted mung beans. Goin with the mung.

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 27 May 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

Adzuki bean b/c of red bean ice cream, red bean paste bao, vietnamese red bean dessert which is like a red bean slushy w/ sweetened condensed milk. Also, when ground up they make a nice face scrub.

Jaq, Thursday, 27 May 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

if black & pinto are in the same group along with navy & pinto then other votes are kind of posing imo

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 27 May 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

I mean if you can only have one for the rest of your life, chickpeas only vs. everything contained in option 1 = no damn contest

going with the mung bean

Face Book (dyao), Thursday, 27 May 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

btw the scientific name for the soy bean is Glycine Max (bolded and underlined and all)

I found out Anasazi beans are less farty than other beans, on account of having less of the farty sugar in it.

Went with the Garden Pea as it's so close to my heart as a biology teacher – always teaching the Mendel-styles Punnett squares of pea traits. Even though the guy fudged his numbers, he is still a hero to me.

pro tip for the upcoming summer weather: make some mung bean soup. soak some mung beans in water for a couple of hours, then put that shit on the burner for like half an hour to an hour. when it's cooled down put it in the fridge. get it real cold, icy-like, you know, right next to the freezer. remove & enjoy, by itself it's excellent I think, but you can add some white sugar if you want. the most refreshing dish I know of.

Face Book (dyao), Friday, 28 May 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I have no wish to add to the poll glut, but you could poll every variety of Phaseolus vulgaris and still get some interesting results. That being said, I'm voting for that because black beans are a staple food for me.

Many, many of the others I don't know.

kkvgz, Friday, 28 May 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

I do need to work on incorporating a greater variety of beans into my diet though, for sure.

kkvgz, Friday, 28 May 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

adzuki and mung bean ice cream are great but i think i will have to go with phaseolus vulgaris for its versatility

harbl, Friday, 28 May 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

Lentils score for being indispensible. I could do without any given kind of bean, but if you had a generic Beans category that would probably switch my vote.

Chickpeas ftw, for without you we would not have papadoms, hummus and many wonderful curries.

property-disrespecting Moroccan handjob (Trayce), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

Hummus is so yum – I make it so garlicky that it is practically just a garlic delivery device, tho.

breaking that little dog's heart chakra (Abbott), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

have to rep for the first choice, especially because of delicious refried beans. but chickpeas and lentils are hard to vote against.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

My sweet peas have been coming in this past week, and they are so freaking good. Just enough steam to get the peas hot enough to melt the butter that goes over them, mmmmmmm. So it's hard to vote against them.

BUT. Phaseolus vulgaris.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

voting Kidney bean, haricot bean, pinto bean, navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) - red beans & rice FTW

but I've never met a legume I didn't like to eat

pigeon peas w/rice - "moros y xtians" - is soulful

Garden peas are little green orbs of perfection. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously taking kickbacks from Big Bean™.
