I picked up an album from WH Smith in the week - was pleased to find that it was free, but it's 24 years since I last collected one so I may be behind the times here. The six starter stickers inside are all top premiership stars too, what're the odds on that?

Thoughts? It's a bit flimsy and a bit perfunctory really. I remember mine being quite hefty things - maybe I just had smaller hands in those days. And there isn't much by way of amusing or interesting features to differentiate the teams. I admire their economy in ruthlessly exploiting the male collector's instinct, I will say that.

Don't think I'll be collecting it - there are other things I could put fifty quid towards I think. What I'd really like to do would be to fill it with comedy shots of the players instead. That Bendtner 'dong' one would be a decent start.

It's just you getting bigger!

I'm about 150 from the end. Best name so far = Chile's WALDO PONCE.

As for silly names, what about Carlos Costly of Honduras?

I've only just started this week, and I'm about a third of the way through...

Some teams are ridiculously hard to come by - I'm really short on Portuguese and English players. And Serbs, really.

You'll be sick of the sight of Americans, Aussies and New Zealanders in a few weeks.

Do you have friends to do swapsies with? That was most of the fun iirc, then a big scramble with all your doubles when you'd completed the whole thing.

It's a brilliant idea:)

At least half of the collectors I know here in Luxembourg are women, by the way. In fact I wouldn't have started collecting if it wasn't for a (female) friend giving me her spare album.

To answer your question, Ismael, I had my first "swapsies" trading meeting last night, which was highly productive.

Spurs supporting friend of mine is putting in the Arsenal players upside down.

I realised the other day I stuck Didier Drogba in the space meant for Didier Zokora. Mortified.

I bought 18 packs from Sainsbury's for just over a fiver, they're doing some kind of multipack deal.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

mighta been better if you hadn't mentioned that tbh.

This thread has made me nostalgic but I don't care about football. Do they still do them for the big kids' films?

I had a Back To The Future one and a Roger Rabbit one as a kid, among others. Maybe there will be a TRON 2 one or a Toy Story 3 one that my boyfriend can disown me over!

You may now point and laugh at me briefly before returning to football chat.

Oh man, they do! The How To Train Your Dragon stickerbook is out now.

Enjoyed the film but the pictures of the stickerbook have reminded me that I do not actually need to fill my flat with this shite. Oh well. Tron 2 stickers might still be cool if the film is not terrible.

I got talking about this with colleagues at work the other day and one chap said he used to collect American Civil War cards, complete with odd gory facts about methods of killing people and so forth.

We had another swaps meeting last night, and just as we were about to the leave the pub at a reasonable 11.30pm or so, this bloke saw we were exchanging stickers and said he lived nearby and he'd bring fistfuls of swaps if we promised we'd still be there in ten minutes or so. He came back with a massive pile that would barely fit into an After-Eight box. Naturally we had to sift through the lot.
I'm feeling decidedly the worse for wear today, but it was a hugely productive evening.

oh Oh OH - how far into the album might eighteen packs get you, out of interest?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

Completed the Beano/Dandy album and almost finished Football '86 save for one (one!) half-sticker Scottish player.

IIRC we were more into the stickers than the football.

If you were starting from scratch (ie unlikely to get many doubles) it'd get you about 1/6th of the way through.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

hmm, that's a dilemma I could really do without

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 13:18 (fifteen years ago)
