this poll reminded me of how i ruined a date i had when i got into a convo about SATC
i was telling her that i was annoyed how all the guys were basically sidelined and made into arm candy/insignificant characters (eg - big) in the film (this was when it had just come out).
she didnt say anything but you could just tell she was thinking 'sexist git' from her face.
i think that fast tracked me to the facebook-friendzone.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 28 May 2010 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

but anyway, my point still stands. that film really did a number on these guys. big especially was made into a virtual puppet.

not a good look for a guy called mr big.

big never had any kind of character iirc

English: The Money Woman (history mayne), Friday, 28 May 2010 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

apart from Moody Blues citation, never recall him every mentioning any old music or any old movies of any kind (unless you mean he generically said "I like old movies!" during some episode). I will give you "takes his mother to church", dunno what's appealing about that exactly (mama's boy?)

uh, then your'e just not paying attention. he's made multiple references to frank sinatra and henry mancini, and he's generally known for appreciating classics, as commented on more than once by carrie. the movies thing is more a revelation in the SATC movies than the show, i'll give you that much.

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

and i don't know what's NOT appealing about a guy who knows how to take care of his family.

I seriously hate this show and haven't watched it in years but I have a serious thing for John Corbett so Aiden.

The same with me (except that I like SaTC), though I'd definitely prefer John Corbett of Northern Exposure or My Big Fat Greek Wedding over Aidan.

Tuomas, Friday, 28 May 2010 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah. Northern Exposure John Corbett was the best, I think. I only really ever watched SatC when Aidan was on it tbh.

everything about Big just screams I AM CONVENTIONAL STRAIGHT RICH WHITE MAN in like 50-foot-high neon letters, with all the smugness and selfishness and boredom-inducing vomitrociousness that that implies. why a flighty, supposedly "sophisticated" boho girl like Carrie would be interested in him - beyond pure gold-diggerism - never made any sense to me.

No, it's totally a Thing. I watched it over and over with my super rich white republican dude brother and his arty boho girlfriends.

Like those arty girlfriends are usually escaping from the same background and looking for the approval for their arty boho-ness from the boyfriends that are secretly just like their dads. And the rich white dudes who threw off all of their dreams for an arty boho escape in order to keep up appearances and make lots of money appreciate the edge that the boho chicks give them.

a) he's witty and smart -- Carrie loves those types of guys (this is why she wouldn't marry Aidan, he's an earthy guy who likes to stay home a lot, i.e. too "simple" for Carrie)

b) Mr. Big was a "project" and Carrie always saw herself as a "project" (a complex character who wasn't always easy to love)

fucking loved jack berger. bit when he talks about the wrong choice of flower as a gift being a deal-breaker and "if i wasn't wearing the right pants i wouldn't be here" he was so OTM. Then they had to make him unable to deal with carrie's success & so callow that he dumped her by post-it. yuck. sex and the misandry.

No disre but maryanne hobbs is peng trust me (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 3 June 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

big especially was made into a virtual puppet.

Ha, I was just talking about this with someone the other day. I wouldn't use the word "sidelined," though, because it's basically the exact same situation as the trophy girl to win in generic stuff about men. Like the trophy is only allowed to have two types of qualities: things that signify they're desirable, and things that make them a challenge. And Big is completely limited to those things -- he's wealthy and powerful and tall and good-looking (therefore allegedly worth it), and then he does a bunch of generic guyish stuff that makes him a challenge (therefore plot). His "challenge" stuff isn't even very interesting -- it's not like there are interesting reasons he's unavailable, he's usually just literally unavailable. (Moves away, gets married, etc.)

On some level you could say the same about Carrie, actually. Like the main characters in such things aren't allowed to have specific personalities and characteristics, because they're supposed to be surrogates for you-the-viewer and the concept of you-the-viewer wanting something. (If they had specifics, you might not relate/desire anymore.) And then everyone around them is nothing BUT quirky specifics. I'm fairly sure most people don't experience the world this way at all, but there's all this TV and film constantly suggesting to us that it's a reasonable way to experience life.

xpost - haha that was kind of an issue with Berger -- like he had enough actual character traits that they could have found a half-plausible dramatic reason for them not to work! And instead he just got weird and bitter/jealous about her success. Despite the fact that he was a respected writer of literary fiction and she writes a sex column, and it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to imagine a lit-fic writer being all personally bitter that a sex columnist is more successful than him -- like he's the one novel-writer who never noticed this dynamic? And compares his success/worth to collections of sex columns?? And then dates sex columnists anyway??? It made zero sense.

I don't know about that. He got dropped by his publisher at a time when her book was really successful. And she had the neck to give him notes on his next book. I could see her coming to embody an entire way of life and value system that would be loathsome to a guy like Berger. It's just a pity he didn't get a spinoff series where we could see him realise the lucky escape he'd had.

i understand the concept of Big as a virtual puppet, but his unavailability is accounted for in more ways than his moving across the country, or marrying the wrong woman. there is a constant back and forth between he and Carrie on the matter of emotional availability and the fear of commitment. clearly, this is a cliche, but it is certainly more truthful and relatable than just writing him off the screen for the sake of the "challenge" plot-line. and as i stated before, his pluses are more dynamic than just wealth, power and looks. he has real character, and a zest for the romantic, and he is the right fit for her.

with regard to carrie, her motivations are also more intricate than what you give her credit for, especially insofar as her struggles with big are concerned. her issues with men are probed, albeit very remotely, when it comes to father abandonment issues, and her constant search for the right man in light of this. and apart from the prerequisite character generality on TV at large, i think the characters on SATC can get quite specific. through the veneer of questionable puns and costumery, there is a ton of emotional back-and-forth that gives you a real sense of what the characters want and where they're coming from.

Carrie was in more than 3 episodes too, and she's a douche in every one of them also.

For the last 3-4 seasons it seemed that even the writers didn't like her all that much, tbh. Maybe she needed a certain amount of 'lead character' generality, as you say, but any charm or pleasantness left in it resided with the other three characters and Steve.

also Big's marriage is a lot more telling than just, he got married and therefor isn't available. he married "that girl," as Carrie puts it - the shiny hair, style section girl. the less complicated girl. and then there's Carrie. says a lot about both of them and who they want to be, in relationships and in life.
