Read that as "interracial hemorrhage."

jaymc, Friday, 28 May 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

No, that was Tom and Helen on "The Jeffersons."

I really had an insane amount of affection for all of the tv movies he did -- they seemed to be on television all of the time when I was younger. He seemed like he had a lot of pain and sadness in his life, hope he is in a better place now.

ô_o (Nicole), Friday, 28 May 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

I'll second that. But I haven't thought about him for years.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 May 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

Also: "Diff'rent Strokes"'s ratings were never commensurate with its hold on popular culture, oddly.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 May 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Muttered elsewhere that On the Right Track was something I actually saw in the theater on first run. Can even remember the final semi-gotcha final line.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 May 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

What's the one in which he plays a genius? I saw that one.

i met gary once

on a junket for the old konami game "nightmare creatures 2"

he was working for UGO, they had had some kinda web auction to raise money for him, then he ended up working as a "freelance journalist" for them for a minute...

he was real friendly....seemed very "in character", or trying to be what people wanted, almost overly weirdly friendly

we ended up as some empty goth/industrial club where they had all these goth slutty looking chicks dancing and a terrible industrial/goth band playing

i was out smoking with one of the bouncers, and gary came out, said goodbye, went across the street to the payphone, made a phone call at it...then walked off into the night

the PR ppl were looking for him and me and the bouncer told them he had left

one thing i remember is he was a really diligent note taker, during the presentation for the game he had a notepad and was taking notes....

he had his web article written out longhand (or so he told us, he was like really cheerful "I've already got my story done!") maybe he went home to type in into the computer....

so that's my gary coleman story.

RIP.

What little I know indicates Gary Colemen had a lot of issues to live with. I was never in his viewer demographic, though, so he never meant much to me. RIP.

A figure of real pathos. Hollywood has a lot to answer for.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 May 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

It was cool how he basically oked having the piss taken out of him by Matt Groening by appearing on that Simpsons episode where he's talking into an unplugged phone and doing karate moves and whatnot.

property-disrespecting Moroccan handjob (Trayce), Saturday, 29 May 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

to expand on what Morbz posted (and hopefully not inappropriately), but there really was something shamefully indecent in how Hollywood treated gary coleman (and emmanuel lewis too). looking back now, there's something really disturbing about how show biz infantilized these two actors into perpetual pre-adolescence -- even when they were well past puberty -- simply because of their size. and i'm not even touching on the ugly racial overtones here.

at the least, i hope that gary coleman found some peace and wisdom before his death. RIP.

Yeah, this, but the 'find someone with fucked kidneys to play a kid forever' thing was not limited to black guys, there was also this woman:

Ironically, the condition which permitted her to play child-like roles long after her childhood ended, eventually took her life.

so ironic ;_;

fred savage is an awesome director of tv shows

symsymsym, Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

maybe ron is kept sane by the fact that he doesn't have his brother's career ... and has never had to appear in Uwe Boll films to make ends meet.

Aspergers Makes My Pee Smell Funny (Eisbaer), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

Rip dude. I was astounded my husband had never seen the show.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Sunday, 30 May 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

i was gonna say that maybe they didn't show it in Belgium ... but then i realized that if that were true, then you wouldn't know who gary coleman was either.

Aspergers Makes My Pee Smell Funny (Eisbaer), Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

ron howard made the transition to director pretty early and smoothly. he's sort of the poster -ahem- child for "child star makes good."
