I'd forgotten how badly being reduced to 4 TV channels sucks.

I enjoy them for some bizarre reason. I kinda like that we've culturally developed these rituals where our country can come together and watch a bunch of celebrities win awards.

I've no problem with the rituals happening I'd just rather gnaw my own face off than sit through them.

The crowd doesn't seem to laugh at his jokes much - I did though

No on second thoughts I wd like TV to broadcast completely random and non-celeb awards shows from time to time. I bet Plumber of the Year is just as good as the BAFTAs.

Occasional glimpse of Michael McIntyre is annoying me here...

I appreciate that Mordy has sort of answered this but I'm fascinated as to where the entertainment value in these things lies. It's like watching somebody else's staff development day.

...annnnnnnnnnnd after ten minutes of the BAFTAs I voted "Fucking Shit". The Brit Awards is watchable in so far as it's guaranteed car crash TV. Everything else is just too polished.

Awards shows want so badly to reach out beyond their fanboy viewer base, they are willing to stoop to any kind of pandering they can imagine to keep you watching. But still, they are just a fucking awards show and to hell with wasting my life watching them for one instant.

If they were just short blurbs and clips and then THE WINNER IS then I might find them kind of addictive as I am invariably at least a year behind on whatever strand of culture and quite like getting a little cheat sheet of what items from the past year (or 30) are deemed worth catching up on

(admittedly ILX is mostly better for this except for me not clicking on threads for things I haven't heard of and then finally watching the series/film/whatever 5 years later and thinking "oh, so that's what that thread that was constantly on New Answers way back when was about, wish I'd read it then")

but as it is I find the speeches unbearable, so generally I'm reaching for the off button partway through the first speech

Worth watching for Cowell's reaction to losing to The Inbetweeners.
