Camcordery at least nominally horror films - S/D/list them here so we can poll them later maybe?

Yep, those things that got spawned by Blair Witch but have kind of run off in their own sub-genre direction for about a decade now.

Off the top of my head I have

Blair Witch Project
{rec}
Quarantine
Cloverfield
Home Movie
Paranormal Activity

but i know theres more out there that i am blanking on.

Also feel free to talk about why these are terrible/awesome

i suppose Cannibal Holocaust fits too in a way?

Adolf Hipster (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

Alien Abduction: The Lake County Incident

(I'd embed the video here, but I don't know if embedding Google videos works the same as embedding YouTube videos, so just click this.)

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

Would you count Ghostwatch?

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Also, I only remember there being one scene, but the extended camcorder murder in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is doubtless one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen in a horror film.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

Welcome to the Jungle
The Last Horror Movie
Strawberry Estates
The St. Francisville Experiment
The Zombie Diaries

Man Bites Dog?

Mr. Hal Jam, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

The Gateway Meat
The August Underground trilogy
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
the opening scene of Frayed
Evil Dead Trap
Exit Through the Gift Shop (truly horrifying, if you have any respect for modern art)

Mr. Hal Jam, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - in part, I think?

If it's not hurting, you're not lurking (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Mr. Hal Jam, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah Diary of a Ghost Hunter. which is terrible, btw

Adolf Hipster (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

If it's not hurting, you're not lurking (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

wondering whether this is an overdone thing at this point - just saw Paranormal Activity and idk, it seemed like sort of an endpoint to me, the structure is so limiting because theyre kind of built on the rails of this long ramp up to final blammo scene. the best of these seem to play a lot with the wtf is really going on here mojo, which i guess is a natural outgrowth of a style where the stuff happening outside of the camera view is the stuff to pay attention to.

Adolf Hipster (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

Even though it isn't what you're really asking for, I feel compelled to rep for the shot on VHS oeuvre of Chester N. Turner, who gave us both BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL and THE QUADEAD ZONE, which are two of the worst films from any objective standpoint ever produced. Both completely disgusting, sad, pathetic, and hilarious. Also, TRUTH OR DARE: A CRITICAL MADNESS is another hilarious and entertaining shot on VHS horror movie from the 80s. Coincidentally, all three movies have amusingly inept and catchy Casio keyboard scores.

Approx. one third of the people I went to film school with thought that this bullshit was their ticket to fame and riches.

"Approx. one third of the people I went to film school with thought that this bullshit was their ticket to fame and riches."
did it work? (if not, which other bullshit ended up being the ticket?)

Philip Nunez, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

There is no ticket. Film school is not a path to fame and riches. At all.

(I loved my time in school, and think I learned a lot of important stuff, but I will likely never make a single dollar from my degree, and I'm totally okay with this.)

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 11 June 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

xpost Black Devil Doll From Hell is frikkin insane. I didn't know he made another! must find

Atrocious, which i mentioned on rolling horror earlier today

Lots and lots of people seem to highly rate Noroi: the Curse, but I can't seem to find much on it anywhere. anybody know anything (looking at u hal jam)

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

also curious about The Collingswood Story (which appears to be webcam based but same diff)

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

also was Marebito actually filmed in part this way or does it just feel so claustrophobic that i just feel like it was?

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

I thought The Last Exorcism was a (slight) notch above most of the recent mainstream horror camcordery that's been everywhere since the first Paranormal Activity did big numbers.

Jurgis Rudkus // Dick Butkus (Pillbox), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

i suppose this is also a place where we could talk abt whatever this weirdo teen superhero camcorder thing coming out is, unless theres already a thread for that

i didnt really much like the last exorcism, but in such a way where i dont really remember why

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

Last Exorcism totally enjoyable until it shit itself in the worst way in the final 10 minutes.

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 February 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

agreed!

"renegade" gnome (remy bean), Thursday, 16 February 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

Haven't seen it myself, but "Lake Mungo" kinds falls under this category too, but more in the style of a fake documentary than a shaky camcorder.

Duane Barry, Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Lots and lots of people seem to highly rate Noroi: the Curse, but I can't seem to find much on it anywhere. anybody know anything (looking at u hal jam)

is great! scary, inventive and very clever. one of my favorite films of this type. has one super-duper annoying character that almost threatens to sink the entire film, but aide from that, no complaints. dunno where you can score a legit copy, but it's out there for the curious.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

i gotta track that down, lots of peeps i trust rate it abt as high as any of the latter day versions of this stuff

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think "Lake Mungo" (which I have just seen) fits entirely -- it's the pseudo-documentary aspect that drives the film and deliberately slows it down, and makes what is in one sense a second-rate episode of "Ghost Whisperer" into a genuinely moving film. None of the adrenaline-driven confusion that defines this sub-genre.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 16 February 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

i suppose this is also a place where we could talk abt whatever this weirdo teen superhero camcorder thing coming out is, unless theres already a thread for that

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 February 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

thx for the link, i think i saw that thread at one point but the namesplosion makes my eyes blur

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 February 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

ten years pass...

Saw Skinamarink in theaters last night and, while I come equipped with considerable moviegoing patience and appreciate the commitment to the bit, this mostly missed me. As a Gen Xer, i think the vintage on this madeleine is a bit late for my taste. We like our mindfucks more explicit.

That said there are certainly a few interesting moments, particularly the ending shot. The (rare) jumpscares felt pretty cheap and elicited giggles from my audience. In general, the star is the film grain so I can't imagine getting too much out of this on an ipad screen... if you're gonna see it, try it on a big screen but keep your expectations extremely small. Props to Ball for getting mainstream distribution for what is explicitly an experimental film tho! Sneaking this into the discourse is no small feat.
