england. i wouldn't hate england if i didn't live in the united kingdom. but having the world cup mania -commentators and all- of another country thrust upon you is sure to make the piss-boil. i applaud england's elimination. i sometimes jump up and down and cheer and get a bit misty-eyed. i would care very little either way if it wasn't for the media and would probably vote Germany.

Still England

Switzerland, beyond tedious waste of space in every tournament.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

but Steve Shasta plays for them!

if it were italy vs. north korea in the finals (and let's face it, it prolly will be) - I'd be rooting north korea

iatee, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

can't vote for italy because they're my super-gloryhunter option (my gran is half-italian, lol).

Lil' Lj & The World (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah they have bored me many times. Although they were a decent side in 94 iirc.

Lil' Lj & The World (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

Italy vs Koreans tends to be good for laughs

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

Watching Gattuso kick people is a highlight of any tournament for me

there's no-one i want to see crash and burn more than France this time but if they miraculously start playing well i might relent. Portugal can fuck off too obv.

Greece btw, for turning an unlikely series of banana skins and giant-killings into the most boring, joyless thing ever

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 June 2010 08:58 (fifteen years ago)

England >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> France >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Portugal > anyone else.

Dislike South Korea for being fast-tracked into the semi finals in 2002 by FIFA, but I suppose that's not really their fault.

I'm not English, so Germany have never bothered me. Italy have never bothered me either.

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 09:40 (fifteen years ago)

I think Honduras might be my second team at the World Cup, purely for Palacios.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 June 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

Now I'm trying to think of who's the most hateable on the USA squad... no adulterers or random beaters there afaik, although Rico Clark did kick someone in the head while they were down once.

What's behind Anyone But England?.

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2010 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

'Fervent England supporter Mark Perryman, author of Ingerland: Travels With A Football Nation and a proponent of a tolerant, progressive English patriotism... "The driving force behind English nationalism isn't the English - it's the Scots. They have their own anthem, their own banknotes and now their own parliament. We don't have any of that." '

LOL geezer has never seen an English banknote

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2010 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

England? Really? I thought Italy would have run away with this one.

Transfer at Yonge for Union station (j-rock), Friday, 11 June 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

From the BBC link above:

In 1998 Scotland opened the tournament with a game against Brazil; roll forward a few days to England's first game (Algeria I think), cue Des Lynam opening the coverage, "The tournament started four days ago, but this is where it really begins."

I think I remember this!

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

how long during todays game did it take for 1966 to be mentioned?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 June 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

In today's game between South Africa and Mexico?

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Friday, 11 June 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

yes, did it get a mention at all? usually it does.

don't get the Italy hate really

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

I understand the greek football hate totally though

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

didn't vote for Uruguay but they have a rep as the most thuggish team in the Western Hemisphere. From the small sample size of people I know, they are not generally well regarded in the us/mex/arg/brazil at least

scottpl, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

Switzerland are routinely pish an' all, how do they qualify for this shit, do they just sneak past once everyone has fallen asleep?

ailsa, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

Switzerland and Greece came through the same group (competition: Israel and Latvia) iirc

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

I never forgave Uruguay in 1986 for being thugs. Ernie Walker called that one right.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

No way: could argue for Greece back in '04 they could do things like defend, find a goal and just blockade their way to a championship.

If only England could do this, but no, its always someone losing their nerve bah.

xxp = well Uruguay and Argentina (and Brazil, often enough) are cut from the same cloth. South American football isn't just 'the beautiful game' and all that baloney. xxp

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

fuck england 4eva, even disregarding volkisch shit extrinsic to the xi itself

greece and its tradition of playing shit football = completely understandable, small nation/no good players/2004 success

england " = none of those things rly

nakhchivan, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

switzerland are shit (except for super behrami)

they had a freakishly easy qualification iirc

cameroon are boring and kinda shit, even tho they have probably my fav player at these finals

nakhchivan, Sunday, 13 June 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

Switzerland lost to Luxembourg at home, but here they are

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 13 June 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

I wish we could get the draws that Switzerland get instead of this France/Italy/Holland shit that UEFA keep landing on us.

ailsa, Sunday, 13 June 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

Swiss generally better than Scotland tho (they got that draw by virtue of being top seed having qualified for Euro 04 and WC 06)

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 13 June 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Freakish is dead right - it was something like worst team in pot 1 (Greece), worst in pot 2 (Israel), Switzerland from pot 3, worst team from pot 4 (Latvia) and Luxembourg (who Switzerland promptly lost to). Basically, no tournament is going to be enhanced by the presence of either of those boring bastards.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 13 June 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

Judging by yesterday Greece can't even do negative football properly any more.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

"don't get the Italy hate really"

Really? I hate the way they dive, and flop around as though someone shot them after even the slightest contact. The way they tend to score a single goal and then completely stop attacking. A team full of men wearing hairbands. Totti. Every Italian football fan ever. There's plenty to hate.

Transfer at Yonge for Union station (j-rock), Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

but they always bring the lols

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

Mark Ronson: "Led Zeppelin were responsible for hip-hop" (acoleuthic), Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)
