Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2010 09:58 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't know that Chile line up in a 3-3-1-3 formation. I had no idea L-Jagz was managing them to World Cup glory.

Born too beguiled (DavidM), Friday, 11 June 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

As a child I believed that 1-3-3-3 was the ideal formation, based entirely on the neatness with which one could line up a Subbuteo team on the pitch. It left no gaps. You even had a spare defender left over just in case, but he ruined the perfection of it so I'd probably've gone with 3-3-3, had I got the chance to manage in the world cup as a nine-year-old.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 11 June 2010 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

I woke up this morning and the very first thing that popped into my head was "shit the World Cup starts today". It was like being a kid at Christmas.

ahah, same here (and I woke up at 4.30am !).
anyone knows why shakira is present at every WC ?? (ok, only the previous one and this one but still...).

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 11 June 2010 10:31 (fifteen years ago)

Shakira's probably the ultimate globalised pop star, more so than anyone from the US or UK.

And, oh god, the first game's on ITV. Hope they're not in control of the cameras.

James Mitchell, Friday, 11 June 2010 10:44 (fifteen years ago)

They're never in control of the cameras. Commentators sheepishly apologising for a lenghty close-up of a pair of jiggling Brazilian breasts is a World Cup institution.

Matt DC, Friday, 11 June 2010 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

I just saw Mark Viduka on television wearing a brown suede jacket and eating donuts in order to remind everyone THAT NOT JUST ANYONE GETS TO GO TO THE WOOOOORLD CUP

thoughts:
maybe the england players should press more
"barry, the fucking ball barry" it a pretty good summation of the second half of that game, and would work nicely as a team motto

group stage is over & knockout stage begins today right? time for a new thread?

crüt it out (dyao), Saturday, 26 June 2010 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

back in an '06 world cup thread i asked where i could find a table that broke down the teams knocked out. someone said, "that's not really done" and i promptly forgot about it, until today. So here it is, and a good ending for this thread. I'm drunk so i might have missed something, but yeah:

Points Goal Differential Goals Scored
32. North Korea 0 -12 0
31. Cameroon 0 -3 2
30. Honduras 1 -3 0
29. France 1 -3 1
28. Algeria 1 -2 0
27. Nigeria 1 -2 3
26. Italy 2 -1 4
25. Greece 3 -3 2
24. Denmark 3 -2 3
23. Serbia 3 -1 2
22. New Zealand 3 0 2
21. Australia 4 -3 3
20. South Africa 4 -2 3
19. Switzerland 4 0 1
18. Slovenia 4 0 3
17. Ivory Coast 4 +1 4

the torres gif is great. he doesn't even trip over his feet, just bangs one ankle into the other chaplin style. was he trying to buy the card or just a free kick in a good area?

Watch only the other guy to see that they did touch. Quite subtle and Torres (lol cell phone spelling suggesting Tosser) obviously did what he's trained to do (make the most out of any contact, especially there), but they did touch.

StanM, Saturday, 26 June 2010 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

Sometimes when we touch
I dive so fucking much

Post di Natale Depression (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 26 June 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago)

dude taps torres' ankle with his knee and sends his foot flying into his standing leg. what's more, if u saw a wide shot, he pointedly changes angle in order to cut across the back of torres while studiously looking the other way.

iSleighBellsTellem (zvookster), Saturday, 26 June 2010 07:11 (fourteen years ago)

haha that capello video - I always have to remind myself dude was a top-level player, his body always seems so warped and improbable.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 26 June 2010 07:21 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it was an accident. But someone was going to get sent off very soon and that guy had been lucky once already.

Also, if you're running at full pace it hardly needs any contact at all to knock you over. It'd be nice if football recognised that, instead of creating a situation where you don't get your free kicks or cards unless you dive, but that isn't going to change now. It's pretty sad, not just because it's shameful, but because some of the very best goals (Maradona riding tackles against Belgium, or Ronaldinho bouncing John Terry to the ground) wouldn't get scored today.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 26 June 2010 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

It's almost english! Look:

breekt - breaks
elleboog - elbow
mist - misses
met - with
baard - beard
