Kinda depressing that ITV feels the need to spell out the fact that Diego Forlan is actually quite good, no really. Apparently this is a surprise to us Britishers.

God, yes, that was bad. Was good that they noticed Uruguay were playing this afternoon though after ten minutes of England's possible line-up for a game not starting for a further 24 hours.

That goal didn't seem quite real, it seemed to unfold in slow motion, it was like Suarez had just been teleported in at the far post.
― Jorge Fucile Jerry (pandemic), Saturday, 26 June 2010 14:11 (fourteen years ago)
What a let off that was for Korea. Uruguay are so much more incisive, can't see any other winner here.

Don't think so, but anything can happen, both teams look capable of scoring.

Burley's really bad on Scottish football because he has a massive chip on his shoulder about the way he left Celtic and can't get over it enough to even pretend to be neutral. He's just shit at this international lark though.
― ailsa, Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
Just read that Uruguay's population is roughly 3 1/2 million. Can this be right? Thought it was much larger than that. If so they're pretty amazing for having a player pool less than half the size of London.
― Jorge Fucile Jerry (pandemic), Saturday, 26 June 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
No, that's right - I think it's about the same size as the UK, but almost empty outside Montevideo

I guess this will be the last time we get to see him on the world stage. I'm sure the twice European Golden Boot winner is glad he just got some recognition from some pundits who have a vague memory of him playing in England a few years ago. Seriously though, hats off to Uruguay. A realtively teeny country with a fanstastic World Cup history, which i was glad to see them add to this year.

Forlan is not only incredibly efficient but... he does everything with supreme power, precision and style. I mean, he just looks so fucking COOL and RAD out there. The twelve-year old me sitting bored at the back of the class couldn't draw the superhero-like action poses that this guy routinely pulls off.

― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 July 2010 07:03 (fourteen years ago)
I dunno, the final will be more entertaining because, y'know, it's the final, and there's actually something at stake beyond the Golden Boot, yesterday's was a lot of fun but had the air of exhibition match about it, and there's a reason why no one gets that bothered about exhibition matches. It was an open game because no one cared much if they lost, but take the tension out of football and you take away most of the fun.
Really felt for Klose - the opportunity to become the all-time top World Cup goalscorer just snatched away from you.

From The Guardian re Wesley Sneijder
The only problem was his personality. Even at Ajax, nobody could quite recall anyone so small and so young with such a big mouth since the waif-like "Jopie" Cruyff had made his debut in 1964. Amsterdammers call the style Amsterdamse bluf. Elsewhere it is called something else. When Ajax's then coach Ronald Koeman dared start the 20-year-old Sneijder on the bench, the kid came on as a sub, scored, and then swivelled to the bench and raised his middle finger at Koeman. Jaap Stam, who ended his playing days with Ajax, phrased it in the cliches mastered over a successful international career: "Wesley is a bit of a controversial person and he really knows what he wants. He's not afraid to voice his opinion. He's a great guy and I kind of like players like him."
This is equal parts reprehensible and AWESOME!
― Eljero Elia Michele (pandemic), Sunday, 11 July 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago)
