did he even play batman?

my weekly race thread (history mayne), Monday, 28 June 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

i don't understand what happened with michael keaton's career after batman. i mean, i like val kilmer fine, but keaton is infinitely more interesting and i think could have had a fascinating career. he has that bill murray quality (a truly haunted and vulnerable comedian, with surprising depth).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 28 June 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

^^yeah that's pretty much exactly what i meant. like, keaton had so much potential; i really don't get what happened. he just sort of disappeared.

horseshoe, Monday, 28 June 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

I think Val Kilmer has the official endorsement of NM governor, death-penalty repealer, and all-around bro Bill Richardson.

why doesn't some HBO/Showtime/FX auteur create something for Keaton? Even _Pacific Heights: The Series_ where every week he finds a new market speculating couple to fuck with.

Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Monday, 28 June 2010 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

Val Kilmer: "Knight Rider" .... K.I.T.T. (18 episodes, 2008-2009)

One of the reasons this show flopped, aside from being absolutely terrible, was that Val Kilmer replaced Will Arnett as the voice.

yeah this is mystifying to me, he is one of those actors who is just begging to be 'rediscovered'

he probably could do soul-crushing paycheque gigs like that if he wanted em

Keaton suffered from the usual round of bad luck and terrible script choices after Batman made him a star.

very few post-Batman star-vehicles between them, curiously. Kilmer's made stranger movies, but Keaton's made stranger choices.

i don't know; the reason i was lamenting keaton's lost career is because i saw part of post-grad recently for dumb reasons and it was atrocious and he was in it and it made me sad.

horseshoe, Monday, 28 June 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Keaton's good enough and likeable enough to survive bombs, so part of me thinks he just retreated from being in the spotlight many years ago. He seems to do a fair amount of voice work, and star in or take a bit role in a film every now and then, but not even that often.

Kilmer still works like mad, it appears, but I've only seen about 10% of it.

So the real question is: which one of these men is better at self-editing?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 June 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

i think i read s.thing about 'post-grad' saying it was thought of as a promising film that went sideways, rather than doomed to fail

His only post-Batman project worth a damn is his FBI agent in those Elmore Leonard adaptations, right? Jesus, I actually saw offal like The Paper and Speechhless (remember that one?) in the theatre, because of him.

he was good in a small supporting role in much ado about nothing

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 28 June 2010 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

He made this very tiny practically-a-TV-movie thing called Touch and Go, released in 1986 although it was made two years earlier, and, stuck with the unpromising premise of playing a man who takes care of a problematic child, he's so sharp that you think he can redeem any material. He had a nice run before Batman (Clean and Sober, The Dream Team, etc).

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 28 June 2010 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

Keaton had a couple of years where he was no longer the irritating new guy that the critics said was good but a confident yet still new dude

funny that both these guys are making mini-comebacks this summer with supporting roles in action comedies. hopefully The Other Guys will work better for Keaton than McGruber did for Kilmer.

~athdouspart (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

Kilmer seems to take a perverse delight in the B movie stuff, so it never depressing to see the weird stuff he's in...but Keaton seems to be "in the weeds"...good actor who should be working more, but isn't.

Keaton had a great moment on Ellen a year or two back, she let him pretend to be a tv weatherman & it was pretty funny.

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

I never minded Keaton but was most amused by his Letterman appearances in the '80s.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

voted for Keaton because he always seems more or less ready to do anything post-Batman, where Kilmer had a livewire energy in early stuff like Real Genius and Top Secret that he stopped using since well before his Batman

~athdouspart (some dude), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus, I actually saw offal like The Paper

hey, the paper is a pretty good Front Page remake - great cast, tight script, well-directed by howard, and keaton is fantastic in it.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 11 July 2010 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

from Wiki: Keaton reportedly was cast as Dr. Jack Shephard in the series Lost, understanding that the role of Jack would be a brief one. Once the role was retooled to be a long-running series regular, Keaton withdrew. The part was given to actor Matthew Fox.

I honestly don't know how to vote. I guess Kilmer deserves it for making more daring choices.

six years pass...

Caught the original tonight on the big screen and while it looks even better than i remembered, while that first third is a total nails-it triumph in the tone and feel and fun and wacky gangster violence man does it saaaaag in the middle. Barely recovers by the finale.

So batman returns is the best batman that's that settled.

Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker both outclass at least half the live action films. (TBF so does The LEGO Batman Movie, too, most likely)

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 March 2017 04:08 (eight years ago)

I've not seen the animated are they very very good

nhex otm. the animated series itself largely holds up well too - some of the episodes are genuinely fantastic

the thing that the various animated bruce timm takes on batman get right that none of the movies did is that they make batman/bruce wayne an interesting character in his own right - he doesn't get constantly overshadowed by the villains.

kevin conroy is the best on-screen batman there has ever been, really (same goes for mark hamill's joker)

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 09:42 (eight years ago)

actually i could probably make the case that adam west's batman is probably the second-most-successful onscreen version of the character after kevin conroy's

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 09:44 (eight years ago)

Unfair on Keaton imo

But regardless nobody buys Bruce Wayne comics

virginity simple (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 12:10 (eight years ago)

tbf i do like keaton the most of all the modern-era film batmen (batmans?) - the 'you wanna get nuts? let's get nuts!' scene in the first burton batman is a great moment. i like his take on bruce wayne as a charming weirdo with a dangerous streak.

in fact i kinda wonder if he based his wayne on tim burton a bit - a withdrawn, vaguely childlike character with an attraction to dark stuff...

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 29 March 2017 12:18 (eight years ago)

I don't know how it took multiple posts talking about animated Batman movies for someone to finally mention Mask of the Phantasm, which I'm pretty sure is actually the best Batman movie.

Timm's animated DC shows and movies are literally all of the DC adaptations I will ever need. I haven't seen anything that surpassed that material (he says while still slogging through all of the semi-enjoyable but fairly dumb CW shows).

oh yeah, definitely - they handled the ensemble cast and endless supporting players perfectly

the brave and the bold tv series, although timm and most of his voice cast weren;t involved, also did a good job of creating fun stuff in the dcu sandbox
