Welcome to TV Land's modern-day re-write of The Golden Girls, starring Betty White as the new resident crankster, and Valerie Bertinelli as the old Betty White.

NY1 put out a great review of this show:
Step aboard my magical time machine, which will magically transport us back to a time when laugh tracks were king and sitcom dialogue was a mere series of setups and punchlines stretched over 22 minutes. And my magical time machine is called "Hot in Cleveland."

"Hot In Cleveland" is a new sitcom from TV Land that debuted in the summer of 2010 but feels straight out of 1987. Whether that is a good or a bad thing probably depends on your perspective and taste in comedy. If you're a fan of irreverent single-camera sitcoms like "The Office," "Arrested Development," "30 Rock," and "Modern Family," you won't find much to like here. But if you yearn for the good ol' days of comfort food comedy when you knew exactly how every episode was going to start and end and that you'd be treated to countless mild sexual double entendres along the way, then you may be hot on "Hot In Cleveland."

The show centers around three women of a certain age from Los Angeles played by Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leaves and Wendie Malick who have a plane stop over in Cleveland, only to learn that they are still considered hot tamales in the Midwest. They end up sticking around, in a house run by Betty White, no less, and you have your fish-out-of-water-rediscovering-the-fountain-of-youth comedy all ready to go. From the actresses to the plots to the writing, "Hot In Cleveland" is a nostalgic blast from the past and in that sense makes total sense for TV Land. And while the show is derivative and predictable in so many ways, the jokes are actually sharp and funny in places. It may not be my brand of humor, but as far as this brand of humor goes, it is done well. And c'mon, Betty White! The woman is a national treasure, for crying out loud. "

"Hot In Cleveland" may not be the hottest new comedy, but with White and company still busting out the comedy stylings of yesteryear, it can still make you feel warm inside.

What do you think? I'm in love.

Clevelanders themselves, in a perfect illustration of middle-child syndrome or something, are gaga over this show: "Look! It says 'Cleveland' in the title! They're paying attention to us! Woohoo!" Bleah.

I love the idea that a city that produced Halle Berry, Deborah Winger, Dorothy Dandridge, Anne Heche and Patricia Heaton doesn't have enough natively hot women that guys would swoon over has-been, over-40 actresses.

Hey, I'm not saying they're my bag, but they've never been cast as, like "the ugly friend" or something.

She was on One Day at a Time 30 years ago, and then was Eddie Van Halen's wife.

I preferred the ones with Kirstie Alley shrieking, they were cracked out.

i just don't understand who thought it was a good idea to see george costanza naked. dancing. in a commercial. way to make me lose my lunch.

it's a hilariously ill-advised ad campaign for that reason, and because Jason Alexander has the same big humpty dumpty head and stocky shape no matter how thin he actually is, so the before/after has no real effect

I will never see this show becaue I don't have cable but let me just say i had a huge crush on Valerie B. when she was on "One Day..". See also, Kim Richards.

Have to agree. I was expecting far less, so I'm pleasantly surprised by it being really funny.

Wow, this show is so bad! The three main characters are repulsive clichés and their comedic timing is MIA. Maybe it's time for "The Last Living Golden Girl" to get the green light, Betty White is wasted in this trash.

xp

i know i was expecting less too!

it's great to have a sitcom on TV that i can watch that isn't, like, cleverly tongue-in-cheek, or 20something drivel. don't remember the last time that's happened tbh!

what do u mean?? basically i don't enjoy 30 rock or glee.

janice (surm), Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like you've expressed opinions on more shows than that, i'm not really the type to be all "you don't like 30 Rock what's WRONG with you"

does a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ sh!t in the woods? (some dude), Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

i really don't think i have, tbh. i mean i've certainly expressed opinions on tv dramas, but not so much comedies. the one time i can remember that you're probably thinking of is when i expressed disinterest in any of those NBC shows on that poll thread cuz i just kind of lump them all together, which is probably daft. but whatevs.
