― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago)
also before any of you wags show up and ask why i didnt have it backed up, w/new mac i had to reformat one of my two externals to do rewind or whatever, which is what i was in the process of doing when the other, newer one ate shit on me.

― Elektro Guzzi Mane (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago)
Upside: Hearing whatever want is really as easy as typing the name of the record you want into google. Maintaining a hard drive is gonna look pretty silly in five years anyway
― Elektro Guzzi Mane (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:34 (fourteen years ago)
Also, you haven't really lost anything! It's just files!

Spilled green tea all around my new iMac and 4 x external HDs this morning. Everything seems fine, lucklily.
― Flowers By Pete (admrl), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:41 (fourteen years ago)
To the original poster - have you tried putting it in a grocery bag in the freezer for 3-4 hours? I have saved countless projects this way (including a 35-minute movie I was editing!).
― Flowers By Pete (admrl), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
wtf is wrong with U?!?!!!?!!1111
Listen to what I am going to say very carefully: I. Poured. Beer. Into. My. Powerbook!

This is why I can't hate insurance companies as much as most people
― Flowers By Pete (admrl), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
if you lost irreplaceable stuff like pictures or whatever, then that sucks and should be backed up in the future, but as far as music files go, yeah, that stuff's pretty replaceable (although having a backup sure does make replacing everything much simpler)
― ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 22:22 (fourteen years ago)
~~just play ur own music man~~
― max, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 04:56 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah Max unfortunately that would be the other thing that was apparently also on the hd so kinda rubbing the salt in the wounds at this point

― AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:04 (fourteen years ago)
Jesus.
Thank you for reminding me to go buy a 2TB external drive tomorrow, though.
― a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:08 (fourteen years ago)
I unplugged a 1 TB drive without safely removing it from a PC and finally bought software to recover. There are some free PC utilities I have used in the past, but I simply don't know what is available for a Mac. Maybe try using a Unbuntu bootable flash drive to access?Good luck. It sort of makes your heart drop, yeah.
― The swan at dawn is now gone (doo dah), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:25 (fourteen years ago)
If the thing doesn't seem completely dead but only unresponsive or similar, *do* spend some time looking around the web for recovery utils to try. Most are probably useless, but I managed to save most of a drive I thought was dead once.
― anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago)
^^^^^^^ can't be recommended enough; also the freezer trick (not to be confused with the popcorn trick) can be a lifesaver
― based on logical thinking (HI DERE), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, im still going to try to work some magic on it (still lights up, just pops up the "unrecognizable disc" error any time i plug it in.) i have a friend that is superman mac guru, so i will be calling in some favors here.
― AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago)
this is also the part where all the dudes that said "wait yer buying a WD mybook what the fuck do you have holes in your head" get to have their told you so moment.
― AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
Not gonna go TYS, but the drive I just mentioned was indeed a WD mybook... :/
― anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago)
oh dude. so sorry!!! this is one of my coldest fears.
if you want anything let me know. pretty sure i've still got all the A;grumh you can handle
― goole, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago)
I should probably back up my WD mybook as soon as I can afford, eh. Tho having been burned before I do double up photos, writing etc. As much of a pain in the ass losing 200gb of music would be, I could rebuild.
― NYC Goatse.cx and Flowers (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 16:05 (fourteen years ago)
this thread is a good reminder that I've been meaning to sign up for some kind of web-based backup service. thinking carbonite or jungledrive, not sure yet though.
― got you all in ♜ ♔ (dyao), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
ok so ive gotten further along here, the error is "disc insertion error", so i think the overall drive is fuxored, but when i run the demo of data rescue 3 it seems that the files are prob still there. anybody have any (mac-based) recommendations for data recovery programs they have used? seems to be an equal split between diskwarrior 4 and data rescue 3 everywhere i look. (1.8 PowerPC g5/ 10.5.8 OS if that makes any difference)
― Kool G. Frap (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 July 2010 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
self serving bump because unless i hear otherwise im ponying up the $100 this weekend for data rescue 3 and hoping it isnt shit
― BEAROTAURDED (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 July 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago)
daringfireball says diskwarrior, but idk
― future American striker hero (lukas), Thursday, 1 July 2010 23:56 (fourteen years ago)
diskwarrior did absolutely nothing. data rescue 3 worked, but omg it took a long long time.
