Upside: Hearing whatever want is really as easy as typing the name of the record you want into google. Maintaining a hard drive is gonna look pretty silly in five years anyway

Spilled green tea all around my new iMac and 4 x external HDs this morning. Everything seems fine, lucklily.

To the original poster - have you tried putting it in a grocery bag in the freezer for 3-4 hours? I have saved countless projects this way (including a 35-minute movie I was editing!).

This is why I can't hate insurance companies as much as most people

if you lost irreplaceable stuff like pictures or whatever, then that sucks and should be backed up in the future, but as far as music files go, yeah, that stuff's pretty replaceable (although having a backup sure does make replacing everything much simpler)

Thank you for reminding me to go buy a 2TB external drive tomorrow, though.

I unplugged a 1 TB drive without safely removing it from a PC and finally bought software to recover. There are some free PC utilities I have used in the past, but I simply don't know what is available for a Mac. Maybe try using a Unbuntu bootable flash drive to access?

If the thing doesn't seem completely dead but only unresponsive or similar, *do* spend some time looking around the web for recovery utils to try. Most are probably useless, but I managed to save most of a drive I thought was dead once.

^^^^^^^ can't be recommended enough; also the freezer trick (not to be confused with the popcorn trick) can be a lifesaver

yeah, im still going to try to work some magic on it (still lights up, just pops up the "unrecognizable disc" error any time i plug it in.) i have a friend that is superman mac guru, so i will be calling in some favors here.

this is also the part where all the dudes that said "wait yer buying a WD mybook what the fuck do you have holes in your head" get to have their told you so moment.

I should probably back up my WD mybook as soon as I can afford, eh. Tho having been burned before I do double up photos, writing etc. As much of a pain in the ass losing 200gb of music would be, I could rebuild.

this thread is a good reminder that I've been meaning to sign up for some kind of web-based backup service. thinking carbonite or jungledrive, not sure yet though.

ok so ive gotten further along here, the error is "disc insertion error", so i think the overall drive is fuxored, but when i run the demo of data rescue 3 it seems that the files are prob still there. anybody have any (mac-based) recommendations for data recovery programs they have used? seems to be an equal split between diskwarrior 4 and data rescue 3 everywhere i look. (1.8 PowerPC g5/ 10.5.8 OS if that makes any difference)

self serving bump because unless i hear otherwise im ponying up the $100 this weekend for data rescue 3 and hoping it isnt shit

diskwarrior did absolutely nothing. data rescue 3 worked, but omg it took a long long time.
