Most outlandish or most familiar? Being legally insane after 11 trips or something was always the one I heard!

Salted gnocchimole (admrl), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

No idea what 'Urbandn' means.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

baby in oven, man, can't tell you how many babysitting jobs i ruined cuz of my lsd addiction.

ian, Friday, 2 July 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

I kind of hate urban drug myths from hearing them told straight-faced too many times. I'm gonna vote bananadine just cos it encourages fruit consumption.

Don't mention de Boer (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

version of the 'orange juice guy' I heard was he thought he was an orange, got a knife and proceeded to peel himself.

voted strychnine cuz I got some shitty 'strychy' acid in my day (plus love the song by The Sonics)

No one is too good for this album; it is better than all of us. (herb albert), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

bad acid. bad bad acid
tbh heard all of these. i know that dude who thinks he is glass of orange juice, he was in my gym class

Retention of LSD in spinal fluid

I remember dudes out in the "smoking section" of my high school giving each other amateur chiropractic adjustments.

kkvgz, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's the version I've heard too, never heard the "glass of orange juice" variation before.

Tuomas, Saturday, 3 July 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

Another urban myth: In x (i've heard both US states and Germany mentioned), acid is treat so harshly by the legal system that selling a single tab is always prosecuted as attempted manslaughter/murder...

'thought he could fly' is the grandaddy of these, no? also most boring but odd that its not on there

tremendoid, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

forgot what the 'blue star' thing had turned into by the time it got to my junior high (via the school administration), i wanna say tmnt but that don't sound right.

I love "baby in the oven/microwave."

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

i guess our 'blue star' variant were the Goofy Stamps being handed out to elementary schoolkids by the Big Bad Pusherman. he must have kept them in his jacket next to the Wacky Tabaccy and pixie sticks filled with angel dust.

No one is too good for this album; it is better than all of us. (herb albert), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

Man permanently thinks he is a glass of orange juice

never heard this one before! It is hilarious.

The New Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

version of the 'orange juice guy' I heard was he thought he was an orange, got a knife and proceeded to peel himself.

In the "orange juice" version I heard, he poked out his eye with a straw.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

that's just crazy - that would mean he wanted to drink himself.

The New Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Angel dust has better urbandn legends imo.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

And better urbandn actual real-life shit! I've been hearing a lot more about PCP lately. Maybe it's making some kind of a comeback?

kkvgz, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

It's a really bad drug for stupid people.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

Alcohol.

Weed. They're far less likely to do themselves harm.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

i hope hipsters bring back angel dust. always wanted a retro-drug craze to happen so I can score some ludes and bennies and reds and STP.

No one is too good for this album; it is better than all of us. (herb albert), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

No one would've thunk ketamine would ever enjoy its current trendy status.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

ludes are apparently back, someone was arrested for dealing or holding them fairly recently in california. I'm not sure where they came from but someone was remanufacturing them.

akm, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

What exactly are ludes, some kind of opiate or something?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

they're awesome

Aerosol, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

:)

one of my favorite bad books is 'Ludes' by Ben "Bueller, Bueller" Stein about Lenny and his descent from yuppie SoCal real estate stud to junkie ludewhore. it was later updated to cocaine and made into an even worse movie - 'The Boost' starring James Woods and Sean Young.

icey pee pants (kkvgz), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

i kinda wonder why it is, out of all things and all possible beverages, that "a glass of orange juice" is the thing an urban-legendary burnout imagines himself to be.

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

There was one when I used to indulge that said drinking a glass of orange juice would end the trip instantly.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

Well, I remember the conventional wisdom being that ingesting large amounts of vitamin C would boost your tripping experience. Once I stumbled upon a friend outside a grocery store with a bagfull of oranges just stuffing his face while he waited for his hits to kick in. Maybe the legend has some roots in that.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

At any rate, there's something about acid and oranges.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

Excellent poll.

"I smoked pot laced with PCP" is another drug urban myth. I think I've had at least 15 people tell me this, usually people who never smoked it again. I think they just had classic firstish-time-being superhigh-panic-attack.

Like this guy:

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

The LSD urban myth I heard the most was that 8 doses made you "legally insane," like you could go get a diploma after it from the insane asylum or something.

thirdalternative, Thursday, 8 July 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

i actually smoked erb that i thought had been laced with something many moons ago. i'd smoked for years so it def was not a first time thing - still have no clue to this day what was going on there.

One of my best buds smoked PCP-laced weed. After a weekend of thinking he had gone insane, his sister took him to the ER. The doctors tested him & everything, it was PCP. I've heard this story from him, his mom, and his sister. I don't think it's common but OTOH it can't be entirely a myth along the lines of babysitter cooking babby on acid.

could be a bad day for (Abbott), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

I first heard the OJ/orange urban legend back in high school in connection with Syd Barrett's freakout. "Yeah man, Syd took acid every day for a year until he thought he was an orange! That's what the song 'Apples And Oranges' is about!"

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

Not in the poll, but anyone else hear of the dude on acid who painted everything in his apartment black... including TV screen, light bulbs, etc.? If not, maybe he was real!

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

I heard Jimi Hendrix did that to an apartment he was renting from Ringo Starr, and also that he fucked up all the tables by melting candles all over them.

mercy, sportsmanship, morality (Abbott), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

still marveling at the zen-like purity of believing yourself to be a glass of orange juice, in perfect stasis, never consumed, for the rest of your life.

lene lovage (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

still marvelling at a guy who takes acid at a New Year’s Eve party, stabs himself, strikes his roommate over the head with a glass penis (who then has to go to the emergency room for treatment), sets the house on fire and the runs around outside naked....

and is then not identified in court because he is in the military and fears he could be discharged because of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy ..

At any rate, there's something about acid and oranges.

"During the summer of 1965, Barrett had his first acid trip in the garden of his friend Dave Gale,[4][5] with Ian Moore and Storm Thorgerson.[4] While on the influence of the acid, Barrett had placed an orange, plum and a matchbox into a corner, while staring at the fruit, which he claimed symbolized "Venus and Jupiter".[4][5]"

I had a friend who took a lot of acid several times in one week- the type of stuff where one to two tabs was enough to send me and my psychonaut friends to Mars for a few hours. She was taking 6-10 tabs a day for a few days.

Fast forward to almost twenty years later, and she still sees trails on occasion, and things will sometimes undulate at random if she's not focused on them. That said, she also won a Fulbright and is a very decorated high school English teacher.

I guess my point is that the stuff can really fuck your brain up if you take too much of it.

I've never heard the "thinks he's an orange" myth.

I do remember my college buddy and I stashing a bottle of Sunny D behind some bushes next to a church one snowy evening. As we were walking home five hours later, we got so excited because man, I'm telling you, we were able to spot that bottle of Sunny D from like six blocks away.

pplains, Sunday, 18 April 2021 15:32 (four years ago)

maf you one two (maffew12), Sunday, 18 April 2021 15:50 (four years ago)

Well, the girl who put the baby in the oven was the daughter of Mr. Green Jeans. Everyone knows that.

pplains, Sunday, 18 April 2021 15:50 (four years ago)

I heard there was a common fallacy that the president was an orange. but looks like people are getting over it.

I always heard it as orange juice had some property that helped end the trip though. Never found out if it was in any way true. it wasn't something being said in acid trip cal down sessions or something? have heard it was a thing that people would go to the red cross because of bad trips at festivals so might be useful to have something like that spread to help people get a handle on things?
Probably better freshly squeezed than Sunny D though isn't that mainly sugar? & definitely better than Fanta which was like grown for Nazis like.

Stevolende, Sunday, 18 April 2021 16:25 (four years ago)

there was a guy in the bay area a few years ago who did acid with, maybe his coworkers at some retreat? and then he lost his fucking mind and either killed or tried to kill one of them. gah let me find the story. It was pretty nuts.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Sunday, 18 April 2021 18:31 (four years ago)

"Friends tried to calm Koffi down when he became delusional after allegedly taking two doses of the hallucinogenic drug around noon. Between 4 and 5 p.m. Koffi took two more doses of LSD" this sounds like the kind of shit I used get up to around 1994. "Hey this is sucking, I should do MORE." that said I only ever had 2 bad trips, one was pretty typical, the other landed me in the hospital for two days because I had some kind of seizure and my heart stopped (imagine having a full blown panic attack while on something like 5x the recommended amount of lsd)

akm, Sunday, 18 April 2021 19:24 (four years ago)

I read this account years ago of someone having a bad trip after trying deadly nightshade and it's always stayed with me: https://erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=52478

Reading it now, I wonder at the truthfulness. That site is full of crazy stories of experiences with psychedelics.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 16:32 (four years ago)

Another one not mentioned thus far, which was a big one back in the day, was that TV personality Art Linkletter's daughter leapt to her death from a window while in the throes of an LSD freakout. She did actually take her own life, but the LSD part has been pretty thoroughly debunked by the post mortem report and other evidence, though Art Linkletter himself went on believing LSD was to blame in some way.

Josefa, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 16:46 (four years ago)

Once when I was in my early teens, I was walking up to the corner store to buy a soda and chanced upon the members of a local hippie band ravenously devouring fresh oranges in the alley outside the shop. They were under the impression that the vitamin c would boost their trips.

I've definitely witnessed a few freakouts, including some violent/self-destructive ones. Don't really want to talk about them though, because it's so personal and depressing for the people involved.
