“Puppy biscuit,” said Walter Mitty. He stopped walking and the buildings of Waterbury rose up out of the misty courtroom and surrounded him again. A woman who was passing laughed. “He said ‘Puppy biscuit,’” she said to her companion. “That man said ‘Puppy biscuit’ to himself.” Walter Mitty hurried on. He went into an A. & P., not the first one he came to but a smaller one farther up the street. “I want some biscuit for small, young dogs,” he said to the clerk. “Any special brand, sir?” The greatest pistol shot in the world thought a moment. “It says ‘Puppies Bark for It’ on the box,” said Walter Mitty.

I keep looking at this thread in the hope that it will feature a picture of a puppy eating a biscuit. And it doesn't.

I remember when my ninth grade English teacher had us read this story. She prefaced it by saying, "To understand this story, you have to know that 'cur' is a word that means 'dog.' A cur is a dog!" Later that year, she was dead, and I went to her funeral.

I have visions of myself walking around in public murmuring vaguely, "puppy biscuit...puppy biscuit...puppy biscuit". These are not unlpeasant visions.

Perhaps I shall begin doing this today, setting a new fashion that will sweep the world.
