I haven't seen Inception, but there's no way it could be worse than Shutter Island.

de jong and the restless (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

Watched Shutter Island on the plane back from NYC. Enjoyed it vaguely, but also felt... embarrassed by bits of it. Loved Inception.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

Twenty years from now it will inspire a crossover film like Alien vs. Predator.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

I like the idea of Shutter Island based on the synopsis I read of it but I am more than certain that actually watching it would make me want to punch the movie in its taint

They are both not good, but Shutter Island was better

Sensational Howard (admrl), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

Inception, for showing more than telling (or at least showing while telling)

Sorta but not really. There's a pretty predictable "twist" in it but that's only part of what irritated me about the movie.

On the other hand there were some memorable scenes that have stuck with me, which is what makes me want to re-view it despite my initial reaction.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

I have an irrational hatred for "twist" endings. I might end up watching this when it ends up on Netflix, although I haven't much enjoyed the other movies Scorcese has made with Leo up until now.

ô_o (Nicole), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

shutter island is an unbeatable ride of chills, thrills and delights with an emotional core thatll have you reaching for the kleenex

max, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

shutter island is a ludicrous, overheated mishmash of pulp detective & psycho thriller tropes, featuring scrunchyface totally miscast as some kind of brooding, jim thompson-style thug hero, but it's a hell of a lot of stupid fun (up until the ending, when it tries to go deep). reminded me of angel heart, and like that film, partially redeemed by sheer dedication to lurid excess. ending really does suck, though.

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 05:09 (fifteen years ago)

weirdly enough not only do these two movies feature leo playing the same character, my girlfriends two "favorite actors" are his sidekicks in each one

max, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

Really liked page for the first time in a long time in Inception

Simon H., Wednesday, 21 July 2010 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

did both of these film have kinda foghorn sounding scores? 'shutter island' definitely did. inceptch -- i think it did.

tbrr i think leo's accent + the chill soundtrack made 'shutter island' the better movie

SI had crappy plot but that just meant that you could ignore it from the the start and pay attention to the visuals/grief/etc. Inception had a great plot that was complicated and busy enough to keep you interested but also meant that there was no time to pay attention to any of the emotions/character arcs/grief etc...

Inception because on repeat viewing it might be emotionally effective while SI will never have a good plot.

Just watched Shutter Island and was highly unimpressed. I haven't seen Inception yet... I'm just going to assume Inception is better.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen Shutter Island. I haven't seen Inception, but I've seen Memento and The Dark Knight. Somehow, Shutter Island is more unassuming than either of these, abject campy grand guignol and all, and what with my own bias against mediocre stuff that's critically praised (vs. mediocre stuff that isn't), I'm voting for Shutter.

B'wana Beast, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

anyone else get the impression that shutter island was scorsese's attempt at mulholland drive?

possible parallel scenes: Leo forced into (and out of) play-acting w/ fake 'Rachel Solando & N. Watts' rehearsal with the creepy older actor...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:10 (fifteen years ago)

Really enjoyed both of these, though Shutter Island lost momentum over the halfway mark, it was treading water a lot. But it's some good hokum overall.

Inception though.

OK I just saw Shutter Island last night.

O M G. I used to read Word Up magazine.

Leo is just.. a joke. Has he ever been actually good in anything? He was kind of sub-Keanu in this.

Lorax OTM elsewhere that the missing final twist where Leo actually IS a doooly uhpointed feduhrul mahshall, and Ruffalo really IS Chuck, with a big fuckin chase sequence off the island and an exposé of the lobotomy equipment etc was the only way to save it.

Oh I almost forgot, uh thanks for the many, many, long, lovingly detailed shots of DEAD KIDS. I think we get drowned dead kids, frozen dead kids, and hacked to pieces dead kids in this movie. And the camera just stays on them! Mmmmmmm dead kids. I kind of would have appreciated a message at the beginning of this movie that said "Warning: The movie you're about to see has several unreasonably long shots of DEAD KIDS. Plus a concentration camp, cause that's freaky too." I'm surprised Marty didn't have the dead wife try to fuck Leo with her kids' blood all over her body, that's about the level of gender relations I've come to expect from him these days.

three months pass...

spoiler and all, but the weird thing is that both movies are pretty good to the extent that they aren't ruined by endless closeups of leo's spongy face going all moony over his (dead) wifes (surprise). and they're both at least half an hour too long largely because of this. shutter island depended almost entirely on the on no dead waife! business, where in inception it feels tacked on to give the star something to act oscar-worthy about, but it's awful in both cases. inestimably more awful, like atrocity olympics in shutter island, whereas just plain ordinary bad in inception - but inception's a much worse film aside from that, so it winds up balancing out.

good soundtracks in both, though shutter island's is again better, while inception gets points for being less heavy-handed about it.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

I couldn't believe what a crock Inception ended up being. A great concept ruined by a total lack of imagination.

I just remembered the recreated concentration camp scenes in Shutter Island. JFC was that fucking unnecessary or what.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Haha and I have also just remembered that yes, there is actually a scene - in this Scorcese movie - of a man getting brutally killed in slow-motion while opera plays on a gramophone

Intercut with long slo-mos of G.I. Leo looking conflicted

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

I liked Shutter Island until the deus ex denouement. The twist seemed so lazy and tacked on, like the Scooby Gang pulling off the monster's mask to reveal some minor character from earlier in the episode.
