Another ILX Bucket comp *is* a very good idea, but I almost want to defer to Mark G to coordinate that! If he's willing.― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:13 (2 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Reasons I don't want to do this:
1) I had a fantastic time doing this, it was like christmas every time a track arrived, and barring a few technicalities (i.e. a couple of tracks that were too long) I was able to incorporate everything I received into the final tracklisting, and every track was wonderful. It's not that 'you shouldn't revisit, next time would not be as good' it's more that someone else should have that kind of fun.
2) I was going to contribute a track last time, but ran out of time and/or inspiration, I forget which. Also, I would be either biased towards (or against) my track's placement (or lack of it), etc. Someone else needs to make that kind of decision.
3) Thesedays, I have less of an ILX presence. Having said that, if someone does kick Vol4 off, they'd better let me know. I missed out on the U2 and the Wire comps, but hey.
So, it's up for grabs.

FYI I tried to do this a few months ago: Suggestion for an ILX Compilation Vol 4(?): Tiny Music
― Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)
I did not see that thread - don't think I was on ILX at the time?
Not sure I could write a 30 second song. But it might be interesting to try.
― Fantasia, having a party is NOT my idea of a fantasy (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)
30 seconds is about all i can manage these days
― tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)
I remember suggesting the exact same thing, except the songs were to be 1 minute long.
Nobody liked the idea.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't see either of the prior suggestions. I think doing really short songs sounds like fun.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)
I mean it forces you to entirely reexamine/reapproach the concept of a "song" and what can be conveyed in such strict bounds, and the manner in which to convey it, etc. I mean you COULD try to cram verse/chorus/verse into one but it'd probably come off as forced and uninteresting. So what can you do in 30 seconds (or 15, or 10?)
― Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)
For ILX, it should be 51 seconds, right?
― Grisly Addams (WmC), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)
I once wrote a one second song. And then remixed it. /topper
― ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
77 seconds imo
― emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
we've also been trying to get together a disco inferno covers comp, but i don't think any submissions have come in yet.
― DâM-EdnA-FunK (get bent), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
^^^was gonna say, this seems to have been forgotten
― RIP la petite mort (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
i've been both busy and sick at various times over the past month. i'd still like to participate if it's still a thing.
― DâM-EdnA-FunK (get bent), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)
yeah same
― Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)
I would like to contribute a track as well.
― ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
Re Disco Inferno comp -- v. busy as well, the ILM thread has talk about extending the deadline.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)
BUT WHAT ABOUT TINY MUSIC!!!
― Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)
Agreed. Tiny music is a fine thing!
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)
i would contribute something if it was tiny music.
― emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
Can we settle on a time limit?
― ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)
I'd definitely be up for doing something. As long as it doesn't have to be in ridiculously soon, anyway.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
Discuss...
― Mark G, Friday, 23 July 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
So since I have this weirdly free period in my life (post-college/pre-career), I would be willing to orchestrate this! But I could probably use a few pointers from people who have done it before? What sort of deadline is reasonable, two months from now?
― Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Friday, 23 July 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
I'd be up for submitting something
― sometimes all it takes is a healthy dose of continental indiepop (tomofthenest), Friday, 23 July 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

well...
― jabulani hands (S-), Friday, 23 July 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)
I ran a 'submissions' page, with status updates, it lets people know exactly how things stand.
― Mark G, Friday, 23 July 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)
i'd like to contribute a track, if possible. i have a perfect, 56-second track i recently finished that would be perfect if it we were doing short micro songs.
― booby girl trap (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:20 (fifteen years ago)
that should read "i have a 56-second track i recently finished that would be perfect if it we were doing short micro songs."
― booby girl trap (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:56 (fifteen years ago)
I will totally do this.
― chuck entertainment cheese (crüt), Saturday, 24 July 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)
77 seconds or less comp
― feelin on yo (_(__) (m bison), Saturday, 24 July 2010 04:28 (fifteen years ago)
Oh that's much too long!
― Lexaprotend (Stevie D), Saturday, 24 July 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)
77 seconds is fine with me
― chuck entertainment cheese (crüt), Saturday, 24 July 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)
77 seconds or less for me as well.
― ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Saturday, 24 July 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)
So 30 seems out of the question; would people people be down for 51 seconds or is 77 like super duper preferred? It just seems like it'd be more fascinating to hear what people would be forced to do with less time.
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 August 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 August 2010 03:54 (fifteen years ago)
77 77 77

― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Sunday, 22 August 2010 04:06 (fifteen years ago)
If Jinglesmith can do it, we all can, rite?
OK FINE, 77. I mean since it's this short I feel it's only fair to allow people to submit 2 or maaaybe 3 songs if they so choose, right? Otherwise we are going to end up with something that is like 15 minutes long.
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 August 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)
hmmm...
― Mark G, Sunday, 22 August 2010 09:44 (fifteen years ago)
Where do we sign up/submit tracks?
― 'ray Clamence (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 August 2010 09:58 (fifteen years ago)
I take it its "up to" 77 secs rather than strictly so, yes?
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)
Up to 3 songs, up to 77 seconds each?
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)
There are lots of musicians on ILX. I don't see any problem keeping the length short and the field open.
I will certainly contribute something.
(Though now I have to figure out who the hell Karen D. Tregaskin is, and what kind of music she would make.)
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)
Well, nom de plume would suggest style, surely? :)
― I used to lurk on some turtle forums (Trayce), Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:43 (fifteen years ago)
Very true. Right, now I just have to get my hands on a GX-1. The rest should be simple.
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:49 (fifteen years ago)
If you are who I suspect you are, that shouldn't be a problem. Just don't blow your thumbnail off with a pyro launcher attached to a Moog ribbon controller this time...
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:53 (fifteen years ago)
But how else am I effectively going to plot the equations of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture into the harmonic frequencies of my sinewave generating curve? It's ~~~complicated~~~
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:58 (fifteen years ago)
I saw a GX-1 at Goodwill the other day for like $40, they can't be that hard to come by.
OK so seeing as I have never been involved with or submitted to one of these before, can anyone offer pointers on the best method of actually submitting tracks? Also, is two months an acceptable amount of time between a call for submissions and a deadline?
― Chanté Ackerman (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)
Given that there were only about a dozen ever made and they cost $60,000 your Goodwill spot seems extremely unlikely to say the least.
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)
I think I saw that one - it was used by Benny Anderson. He used to trim his beard over it. Not very good condition, hence the low price.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
I'd be up for contributing if it became a song-for-song cover of The Residents Commercial Album, with the strict 60 second time limit intact.

― auntie mame cabinet (Stevie D), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)
Oh. Yeah, this. I did actually write & start to record something but due to my idiocy it spiralled from 77 seconds to 7 minutes.
Then I got Reason 5 and the upgrade did my head in so everything went on hold.
I will, however, try to do a 77 second edit of the opus and contribute it to this.

Yeah there is no signing up, just make a short piece of music that is, at most, 77 seconds, and I will try to work out submission guidelines. I'll also come up with a deadline in the next few days
