ILX Compilation Volume Four: Up for Grabs

Another ILX Bucket comp *is* a very good idea, but I almost want to defer to Mark G to coordinate that! If he's willing.

Reasons I don't want to do this:

1) I had a fantastic time doing this, it was like christmas every time a track arrived, and barring a few technicalities (i.e. a couple of tracks that were too long) I was able to incorporate everything I received into the final tracklisting, and every track was wonderful. It's not that 'you shouldn't revisit, next time would not be as good' it's more that someone else should have that kind of fun.

2) I was going to contribute a track last time, but ran out of time and/or inspiration, I forget which. Also, I would be either biased towards (or against) my track's placement (or lack of it), etc. Someone else needs to make that kind of decision.

3) Thesedays, I have less of an ILX presence. Having said that, if someone does kick Vol4 off, they'd better let me know. I missed out on the U2 and the Wire comps, but hey.

So, it's up for grabs.

Not sure I could write a 30 second song. But it might be interesting to try.

30 seconds is about all i can manage these days

I remember suggesting the exact same thing, except the songs were to be 1 minute long.

Nobody liked the idea.

I didn't see either of the prior suggestions. I think doing really short songs sounds like fun.

I mean it forces you to entirely reexamine/reapproach the concept of a "song" and what can be conveyed in such strict bounds, and the manner in which to convey it, etc. I mean you COULD try to cram verse/chorus/verse into one but it'd probably come off as forced and uninteresting. So what can you do in 30 seconds (or 15, or 10?)

For ILX, it should be 51 seconds, right?

I once wrote a one second song. And then remixed it. /topper

we've also been trying to get together a disco inferno covers comp, but i don't think any submissions have come in yet.

So since I have this weirdly free period in my life (post-college/pre-career), I would be willing to orchestrate this! But I could probably use a few pointers from people who have done it before? What sort of deadline is reasonable, two months from now?

i'd like to contribute a track, if possible. i have a perfect, 56-second track i recently finished that would be perfect if it we were doing short micro songs.

So 30 seems out of the question; would people people be down for 51 seconds or is 77 like super duper preferred? It just seems like it'd be more fascinating to hear what people would be forced to do with less time.

OK FINE, 77. I mean since it's this short I feel it's only fair to allow people to submit 2 or maaaybe 3 songs if they so choose, right? Otherwise we are going to end up with something that is like 15 minutes long.

There are lots of musicians on ILX. I don't see any problem keeping the length short and the field open.

I saw a GX-1 at Goodwill the other day for like $40, they can't be that hard to come by.

OK so seeing as I have never been involved with or submitted to one of these before, can anyone offer pointers on the best method of actually submitting tracks? Also, is two months an acceptable amount of time between a call for submissions and a deadline?

Given that there were only about a dozen ever made and they cost $60,000 your Goodwill spot seems extremely unlikely to say the least.

I think I saw that one - it was used by Benny Anderson. He used to trim his beard over it. Not very good condition, hence the low price.

I'd be up for contributing if it became a song-for-song cover of The Residents Commercial Album, with the strict 60 second time limit intact.

I am totes willing to operate this but lack the programming skills to design a nice upload page, etc. If someone wd help me with that I wd do the rest.

Oh. Yeah, this. I did actually write & start to record something but due to my idiocy it spiralled from 77 seconds to 7 minutes.

Then I got Reason 5 and the upgrade did my head in so everything went on hold.

I will, however, try to do a 77 second edit of the opus and contribute it to this.

Yeah there is no signing up, just make a short piece of music that is, at most, 77 seconds, and I will try to work out submission guidelines. I'll also come up with a deadline in the next few days
