Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Soup, Kebabs, Fish, Potatoes.

Don't mind losing white rice if I've still got brown. Sorry to wave off mushrooms. Actually mushrooms is hard. Don't know tbh, maybe I should've voted mushrooms. Steak is steak but potatoes is 20 awesome different things.

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Cake, Kebabs, Mushrooms, Potatoes

cake vs soup is tough, but carrot cake rules all, so that.

white rice is good but not on its own, so it's hard to justify voting for it over anything that works on its own. I won't be voting for kebabs in the next round I figure but it gets the nod here.

boy do I love mushrooms.

don't care about steak (which is good since I can't afford it) & potatoes are versatile & affordable. man I love a new potato boiled & served with butter.

Euler, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

Praying against all odds for potatoes to see this one through,

I've made it three times now and everyone who's tasted it has melted into an orgasmic froth.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

Soup, White Rice, Mushrooms, Potatoes

Voting for white rice was a bit weird, but kebabs are just plain nasty

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

I took it as meaning a proper doner btw, not the other ones that are rubbish.

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

I honestly thought steak vs. potatoes would draw howls. I can't imagine having a steak without a baked potato on the side to soak up the juices.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

That's the thing, lots of the different main meals I eat would be really rubbish without some sort of potato-based comestible in there.

WOOD! GOBLINS! (NickB), Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

Soup, kebab, fish, steak. Don't know what WmC was talking about, this was the easiest of the four groups.

I would take mushrooms over the median fish, but fish includes salmon, pickled herring, anchovies, and smoked goods of all kinds.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

Cake, White Rice, Fish, Potatoes

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Went potatoes over steak. Steak is where I draw the line as a carnivore. It's too meaty if you know what I mean.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

i can't believe I just voted for potatoes over steak

on the other hand, indifferent steak was the meal that made me stop eating meat, but no potato-based foodstuff has ever predicated a major life decision

thomp, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

White rice is like the worst thing in the entire tournament. Blandness!

This round is easy. Next round will be HELL ON EARTH

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

No wait, soup vs cake is NOT easy

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

fine, eephus and gbx hivemind it must be.

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

Cake vs. Soup -- tough choice. I wouldn't want to let either one out of my life, but soup wins in a general savory-over-sweet preference.

White Rice vs. Kebabs -- one of my favorite simple meals is some steamed broccoli with basmati rice. Kebabs are great, but rice wins for being more important to me day to day.

Mushrooms vs. Fish -- voting mushrooms, but only because I know sushi is coming in a later group. Impossible choice.

Steak vs. Potatoes -- I would probably give up steak before I'd give up potatoes, but the best steak I've ever had was better than the best potato dish I've ever had. Tough one, but steak wins.

White rice is like the worst thing in the entire tournament. Blandness!

Have you not eaten basmati rice?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

Ppl considering voting for cake over soup, pls recall GUMBO IS SOUP

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

Well maybe gumbo should've been an option then! >:(

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

Cake, White Rice, Mushrooms, Potatoes

lol carb freak. if you're desi, white rice is the ultimate comfort food. just the smell of it steaming relaxes me.

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

Anti-Suggest Ban Order (acoleuthic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

cake, kebab, mushrooms, steak

rice vs. kebab was tough though - then I remembered lamb souvlaki. But now I am craving rice pudding.

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

I have come to the conclusion I have no cake gland, it's all just cake to me no matter how good or bad it is (and I have eaten cake others have put in extremes of the two categories).

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

rice and potatoes far too versatile to ignore here, and i hardly ever eat steak or even kebabs tbh.

smh at anyone voting mushrooms over fish.

no, you're dead right, it's a macaroon (ledge), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

it's too broad a category, my brain defaults to, like, a fried fish filet rather than something like lox. actually, considering lox, i should have voted fish.

Basically I'm super hungry at the moment and voting for all the stodgy options.

Soup, Kebabs, Fish, Potatoes

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

Soup is such a broad category. How could you do soup vs. potatoes when soup can include potatoes?

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

though i think i could have made a mistake with kebabs

xp - that's why you vote soup -- it can contain anything

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

xxp but it's Soup Vs Cake. you don't have cake soup, or soup cake. it's a straightforward choice!

sometimes all it takes is a healthy dose of continental indiepop (tomofthenest), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

nope

xp - that's why you vote soup -- it can contain anything

that's also why you vote kebabs!

i did vote kebabs

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that was the thing that intimidated me about it

horseshoe, Saturday, 24 July 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

also too many ingredients -- much cheaper and more efficient to go to tank noodle since it's on my way home from work. BUT i do save the leftover broth and add my own noodles for extra next-day eating.

Cake, Kebabs, Fish, Steak

Cake = yum, soup = ok, sometimes great

Kebabs, again probably means something specific to the folks from the UK. To me this is anything grilled on a stick, which is ok by me. White Rice is zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Fish, easy.

Steak is great, a potato might make a good side, but maybe a nice salad would be good too.

Moodles, Sunday, 25 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

soup as I say is a whole world - Indian soups are a thing, Mexican soups are another, north African soups are incredible, on & on, noodle soups, lovely miso, just so many different textures & taste combinations & feels whereas cake is delicious, and there are certainly many kinds of cakes in different styles, but the contest isn't even close really: soup is like a whole genre of its own

this book btw while work-intensive has some of the best soups I've ever made

if I were a carnivore the absolute bloody triumph of soup over cake would be even more pronounced & breathtaking, you people who eat meat yet vote cake over soup are gettin your kitchen pass pulled
