you know how you have to name your computer when you install windows or osx on it or whatever? what is yours named? i am asking because i am using my roommate's living room where we installed windows 7 and i named his computer "Bieberholixxx." He named it HAL before; I felt that required punishment.

One time my friend named/labeled my thumb drive that was plugged into her Mac (but wouldn't tell me what she'd named it), and a week or so later I was using a Mac at the computer lab and plugged in my thumb drive and up popped TAMMY and I just fucking lost it in the crowded but stone-cold computer lab.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 22:55 (five years ago)

I tend to name desktop computers after the case rather than the parts inside, as the parts change more frequently. Jupiter (so named because the supplier called it a 'Jupiter ATX full tower case' since it was the biggest one they sold) had at least three different mainboards in it, and Saturn (same type of case as Jupiter but with a difference front face) did as well.
Laptops get named after some aspect of their exterior as well, even though their internals don't change as much. My current laptop is called pinstripe, since it has what the manufacturer called a 'pinstripe texture' all over it to make it somewhat fingerprint resistant.
I've been thinking about naming external drives and USB memory sticks after boats, because they carry cargo (data) and move between ports *gets coat*

Being cheap is expensive (snoball), Friday, 6 March 2020 18:26 (five years ago)

Only time I ever named a computer was in 1999. I was pretty "wacky" back then so I named it Ordway P. Charmeleon. Really stupid fucking name, but there it is.
