pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:29 (fifteen years ago)

still havent watched 'reds' which i suspect is good

'to be or not to be' is not bad & i had no idea it was considered a flop

voted holy mountain

johnny crunch, Monday, 26 July 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

saw 'reds' on a really small tv. it's probably ok-ish.

pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

Ishtar's not nearly as bad as its reputation. It's a pretty basic bad 80s screwball comedy. I'll watch it if it's on TV.

I've only seen bits and pieces of Grindhouse, but I loved what I saw.

Why the hell is The Great Dictator on there?

kkvgz, Monday, 26 July 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Mars Attacks!

Tuomas, Monday, 26 July 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

Couple of bona-fide classics in there. Playtime, Dune, Hudsucker, The Great Dictator, Zabriskie Point...
Voted Ishtar because it has Isabelle Adjani in it and not enough people have seen it, or even heard of it.

I can use my expense account if I say they're whores (CONGO, M.D.), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Ishtar because it has Isabelle Adjani in it

strongly approve of this

pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

Hudsucker Proxy:

Budget $25-40 million
Gross revenue $2.81 million

ouch, I didn't know about this. Although I can't imagine what the funders were thinking putting all that money into it ($25m was pretty big budget back then, right?) in the first place.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 26 July 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

Red Beard (1965) ffs

zappi, Monday, 26 July 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

I knew Reds wasn't a hit but I thought it made a modest profit.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 July 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

some stupid great films on this list. torn between going for the absolute classics (playtime, peeping tom etc..) and recent films that should be repped for more (assassination of jesse james for instance)

orakle-krake (Gukbe), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

How can Enter the Void be a failure when it hasn't even been released hardly anywhere yet?

Lotta good movies in here. My top 10 candidates:

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)
White Dog (1981)
Showgirls (1995)
Grindhouse (2007)
Popeye (1980) [actually good]
New York, New York (1977)
One From the Heart (1982)
Peeping Tom (1960)
Playtime (1969)
Heaven's Gate (1980)

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

Does "White Dog" qualify as a "folly"?

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

This list is some bullshit. Or the thread title's all wrong, as many of these films actually made a lot of money.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

list is pretty sik, voted holy mountain, love the assassination of jesse james mars attacks and dune too

ice cr?m, Monday, 26 July 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

xp - tbf it's a wider definition of flop that 'didn't make any money'.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

...of 'flop' THAN 'didn't make any money'.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

I like lots of these. Would rep very hard for Hudsucker but voted Peeping Tom.

Don't see the appeal of Popeye at all. Caught it on TV recently and thought it was a complete trainwreck.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

williams kills in it imo

pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

Having now read the article, I'm still not sure why the The Great Dictator is on the list, other than the author thinks the ending looks a bit naff in the context of now.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

Good feature, if inevitably erratic. The venom of the Boat That Rocked entry is quite something.

Greil Marcus, in his Dylan book, makes Masked and Dangerous sound fascinating, but then he would.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:42 (fifteen years ago)

of what ive seen, id've voted popeye the worst

johnny crunch, Monday, 26 July 2010 12:44 (fifteen years ago)

i kind of wanted to see 'the boat that rocked', just to see. r-curtz is usually funny, his haters not so much: TO can usually be fond with its tongue up mike leigh's self-satisfied and stylistically conservative arse.

pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "flops" and "follies" and "failures" covers a pretty wide range of financial and creative shortfalls. Wild Wild West standing shoulder with To Be or Not To Be is just weird.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:48 (fifteen years ago)

xp Not seen "Boat that rocked", but judging by the publicity etc. the venom is entirely warranted.

Voting "Hudsucker Proxy".

Neil S, Monday, 26 July 2010 12:49 (fifteen years ago)

Love Popeye and Harry Nilsson but have never managed to watch "Popeye" all the way through.

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

TBTR is not that bad. But far too long and Ifans is v. irritating.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

am i the only one who loved Wild Wild West, i remember a scene showing a great ass

but in the end voted for Dune

F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

It's not even that the Boat That Rocked entry is that well-written, nor that the film is that bad. It's more that, amid all the talk of interesting failures, the sheer hatred is quite bracing. Film has a few funny bits but many serious misjudgements. Twenty years after Darling in Blackadder, I can't fathom how Curtis thought it was remotely amusing to call a villainous character Twatt.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

wild wild west is funny. streets ahead of 'i, robot' or 'hancock'.

pieter brogel the elder (history mayne), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

Will Smith's ass?

lol at the ILX pleasing editors of TBTR.

Deleted scenes
With an initial running time nearing three hours, many scenes were removed as the editing progressed solely for time reasons. These include a sub-plot about a rival pirate broadcaster being sabotaged by the Radio Rock crew (featuring James Corden)...

Mosquepanik at Ground Zero (abanana), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

Man, I didn't notice Red Beard was on the list! I should've voted for that, it's my favourite Kurosawa. Now I feel bad for voting Mars Attacks...

Tuomas, Monday, 26 July 2010 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

xps - the sexism in TBTR is unrelenting and unpleasant tbh. I'm struggling to remember why I though it wasn't that bad. Probably just because Philip Seymour Hoffman is in it.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

Wild Wild West is great but I didn't vote for it

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

There are a lot of legitimately great movies on this list, but I ended up voting for the one I have the most affection for even though it is all kinds of awful (Showgirls).

ô_o (Nicole), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like we did a poll in the last year or two of some other (smaller) list of movies that last money, and Grindhouse won, but i can't find it. like the larger amount of options here, though.

some dude, Monday, 26 July 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

That was just the flops of the last decade, I think.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Playtime is one of the greatest movies ever, so that.

I like tv random anything (corey), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

My pics:

Playtime
White Dog
Greed
To Be Or Not To Be
Reds
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 July 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Hudsucker, but there are a good number of films on that list that I like a lot, even if they are admittedly not GREAT, because of their style -- sometimes great art direction or soundtrack at the expense of substance is just fine with me. Heading that list would be:

One From The Heart (eyepopping Vegas neon streets constructed on a soundstage, and i love the Tom Waits/Crystal Gayle songs)
New York, New York
Popeye (those three at least interesting attempts to update the musical)
Mars Attacks!
Fire Walk With Me
Grindhouse
Sorceror (great T. Dream soundtrack)

All 10 songs permeate the organs (Dan Peterson), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

ton of great movies on here

wtf is Holy Mountain doing on this list?!?

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

hudsucker ahead of the assassination of jesse james ahead of the spirit, which i thought was quite a funny spoof, and i'm sticking with that interpretation.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

kind of surprised no one likes or is mentioning The Wizard of Oz!

jaymc won $5800 on day 1! (HI DERE), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

grindhouse vs hudsucker vs peeping tom vs mars attacks but only because the great dictator shouldnt even be on the list

I DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR SAVED CHALK (jjjusten), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not considering the wizard of oz because it went on to huge success, tbh. otherwise it's a lock.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

(xpost) Yeah, meant to add a postscript to my entry. Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite films of all time, and while I realize it didn't make a ton of money ON INITIAL RELEASE, it was Oscar-nominated in multiple categories and is obviously too classic to be on this list imo.

All 10 songs permeate the organs (Dan Peterson), Monday, 26 July 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Really pleased Hudsucker's getting so many votes. Even among critics it seems to be regarded as a dud - cold, hollow, artificial, etc - but I love every inch of it. It's way more than an arch pastiche.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

I love Hudsucker Proxy, just not sure I love it as some of the other greats on this list

Popeye should really be better than it is, but even so I can't hate on it too much. The first third or so is fantastic, as a kid I found the whole sort of archaic mythical eastern-seaboard world totally fascinating. but once pappy shows up it's all downhill.

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta go with Hudsucker -- it's for the kids!

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

Tim Robbins setting the trashcan on fire is probably the funniest bit of physical comedy he's ever done

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

altho the Muncie Eagles dance/chant is pretty close

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

the sexism in TBTR is unrelenting and unpleasant tbh.

erm, lol 1960s?

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

hudsucker for me is 1000% about the shocking fact that jennifer jason leigh nails her rosalind russell impersonation and it is awesome

I DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR SAVED CHALK (jjjusten), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

love JJL and Coen Brothers at that point in their careers but there's at least 10 movies on this list I'd vote over Hudsucker.

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

1st Star Trek movie is by far and away the best of the ST movies.

Michael B, Monday, 26 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

BOOOOOOOOOM there goes the challop

flashing drill + penis fan (Noodle Vague), Monday, 26 July 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not even sure what the criteria is for this list, because afaict the first Trek movie made lots of money right away

some dude, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

I wish Trek TMP had come out when I was in college so I could've seen it in the theater while fried on mushrooms, which is clearly what it was designed for.

it's not *terrible* but man does it drag

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

Most everything I thought of is on the list, but one possible omission is De Palma's Bonfire of the Vanities--haven't seen it, but I recall it being a somewhat anticipated flop. I've tried three or four times with Heaven's Gate, but no luck. Were there great expectations in 1955 that Lola Montes was going to make a lot of money? I don't really get that one--ditto, for the opposite reason, The Wizard of Oz, which gets my vote over Peeping Tom.

clemenza, Monday, 26 July 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

more like Star Trek the Slow Motion Picture amirite

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 July 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

Mars Attacks had me lol'ing hard when i saw it. so that's my vote.

like, I was super excited because I really liked Shelly Duvall and Robin Williams, and I felt like the first 15 minutes of the movie was akin to both of them peeling the skin off of my face and shitting on the exposed muscle and cartilage

the Assassination of Jesse James, easily

I saw this as a kid, and I expected it to be like the cartoon but it was so so horrible. I attribute my hatred of Robin Williams to this movie tbh.

assassination of jesse james was one of the best of the decade for me.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

There are more of my favorite movies on this list (Mars Attacks!, Hudsucker, Playtime) than on any list of "best" movies I've read.

I DIED, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

Hudsucker was on TV last night and warmed my heart

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

That movie's so quotable. "Not counting the mezzanine", "you know, for kids", "Sure sure", "What if you tire before it's done?" The rhythm of the dialogue is pure joy.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

'to be or not to be' is not bad & i had no idea it was considered a flop

It came out after it's female lead had died in a plane crash and at a point when the public wasn't in the mood for comedies about the Nazis.
