Etymology of "grebt"?

So, where did "grebt" come from and what exactly does it mean? Is it used to describe something good that isn't quite great (but is better than grect)?

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i may have been there when 'grebt' came into being. erm, no scrub that! not at the actual time, oh dear this is terrible, but when the text message appeared in the glasshouse stores (if you type great into a mobile, but press 2 twice instead of once you get a b instead of an a).

gareth, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Please please don't ask this. It is all my fault and down someone drunkenly texting me and presumably not having predictive texting. Anyway it is quite rude. But flattering to me ha ha.

Emma, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You certainly weren't there Gareth! Unless I was drunker than I thought heh heh.

Emma, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I REALLY want to know! (Email answers are acceptable.)

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot email it to you Dan your wife might find the message! I might do actually but you must promise not to broadcast it.

Emma, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, the arrival of the txt rather than, yes, well

anyway, what i wanted to say is how amused i am that, of all people, the pinefox has used this world recently, presumably unaware of its origins.

gareth, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I promise not to tell a soul. Except Joei, of course.

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the word is older than that. I have a Recovered Memory of it.

the pinefox, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to know what ph33r and ph34r mean?

Chris, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps it was Pinefox that sent the text message?

RickyT, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha RickyT I am not sure if that is more offensive to me or to Mr Pinefox.

Emma, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks, Emma! That blows my original definition away!

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm - now *I* too need an explanation of the message I ph34567r.

the pinefox, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes: if you can't share with the class maybe you should just keep it quiet, eh? (Fear my teacherly logic.)

nabisco, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to know as well, I'm afraid.

Also: sux0r (and variations thereof), sistrah, evah.

I obv. know what they all mean, but are there similar stories of origin behind them?

Mark, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is the "influence" of mark s.

bnw, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once got a text message from the Pinefox. Surely one of the stranges moments of my life.

Ally C, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But did his text message use the word "grebt"?

rosemary, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

may be had to txt because his mouth was full and he couldn't speak? (truly i am turning into mr djp)

I saw that blog entry about Grebt. Funny that this shows up on a US site. "Grebt" is swiss German from the Bernese area and means 'funeral feast'. Grebt is sometimes also written as Gräbt (do not confuse with the second person singular form of the German "graben" - "dig")
