...while Jack was just heavy.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

My pick was Duvall.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

for the performance in question or the actors themselves

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

Performances.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't seen the middle three! that's surprised me. not sullying vote results with my ignorance in that case.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Duvall.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Duvall, although Fonda's performance is good too.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Fonda

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Saw the Hoffman, Nickolson + Damon flicks, remember the other two but never actually got around to see them. Voted Damon, but tbh none of those three were particularly compelling performances imo.

Mordy, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

ludicrously missing:

Daniel Day-Lewis – The Boxer
Djimon Hounsou – Amistad
Kevin Kline - In & Out

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

In & Out is painful.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Tom Selleck and Bob Newhart are very amusing though.

I'm with you on The Boxer, where he and Emily Watson are very sexy.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

For all that Amistad tapers into a biopic, Hounsou is fantastic in it.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

I liked Hopkins too.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

well, he was just hopkins really.

i was more pleasantly surprised by mcconaghey i think

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

In & Out is funnier than Spartacus.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

Hoffmann

the rest of these movies suck

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

Wag the Dog is a lame attempt as satire, diluted (Mametized) from source materail

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

Agree with Morbz here. Wag the Dog was pretty smug and self-satisfied and had very little to recommend that kind of attitude.

Mordy, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

We're not grading the movies, Shakes, just the performances.

The best movie on this list though is The Apostle.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

the rest all of these movies suck

still they got me like beezus (Pillbox), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

Duvall's good but The Apostle makes Southern evangelical Xianism dull

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

I agree that they're all kinda bad - but watching Hoffman do his Robert Evans impression was at least mildly entertaining, which is more than I can say for the rest of this shitpile

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

Duvall's good but The Apostle makes Southern evangelical Xianism dull

so totally wrong. The last ten minutes are among the most thrilling I've ever seen. I don't have any problem defending The Apostle as almost a great movie, and certainly one of the best movies about religion.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of boring in this list.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

If it's any consolation, the best actress noms are more appalling than usual. Bonham Carter shoulda won.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

All the best movies about religion I can think of are Italian.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah Kundun's great innit

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

what about Wise Blood?

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

What about Ben Hur?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Or Stranger Among Us?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Battleship Earth?

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

I think you mean Battlefield Earth.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

Simon of the Desert

The Gospel According to St Matthew

ja this one's great

Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

... also Italian.

Peter Fonda might very well have gotten my vote shortly after this for his supporting role in The Limey -- but not nominated, right

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

stamp wasn't nominated for limey either right? voted fonda but none of these strike me as extraordinary performances or films - why 97?

balls, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Just hopping randomly.

Stamp's only nomination is supp actor for Billy Budd.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

my favorite performances in The Limey were Lesley Ann Warren and Luis Guzman's.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

everybody is good in the Limey

Master of the Manly Ballad (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

glancing around at other races - 74's funny if only for the actual winner (shades of can't slow down winning at the grammys), 34 is interesting also (never seen the affairs of cellini but everything else totally oscarworthy in my book).

balls, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

That's a good analogy! Art Carney and Can't Slow Down = perfectly respectable, unexciting winners (although Harry and Tonto is looser and weirder than CSW).

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

"everybody is good in the Limey"

Yeah it's good stuff.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 August 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

joint third last, more like

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

have only seen three of the options, voted for one of Damon's best roles over movies that wouldn't make Nicholson or Hoffman's top ten

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

Saw all of these but Wag the Dog. Pleased to have voted for the winner.
