It was a hell of a ride.

Was just about to post this. I'd no idea Road Dahl was Mr. Patricia Neal.

It was some marriage!

I'd no idea Road Dahl was Mr. Patricia Neal.
I remember I'd heard of Dahl first, then the TV movie from 1981 they mentioned ran -- only remember the ads but that was enough to draw the connection.

still mooning over gary cooper until the end
That's both sweet and sad -- which perhaps was her in a nutshell.

Gary Cooper always looked like he emitted not very discreet waves of Bronco cigarettes and moth balls.

To expand on something I posted on Rolling RIP: her performance in Hud could well be my favorite female performance ever. Her delivery of that one line, "I've already done my time with one cold-hearted bastard, I'm not looking for another," is so perfect.

She was lovely in Cookie's Fortune, the last recent performance of hers I saw.
As terrific as she is in Hud, Newman so dominates it that I'm still surprised she won Best Actress instead of Supporting Actress.

That's the thing, though: I'm a huge Newman fan, love him in Hud, but I think that, even with the imbalance in screen time, she plays him to a draw. She's got him completely figured out, and is even perceptive enough to admit that she would have ended up sleeping with him anyway, if things had run their natural course.

That was the end of my career as a second Garbo.
At 10, she attended an evening of monologues in the basement of the Methodist church and wrote a note to Santa Claus: “What I want for Christmas is to study dramatics.”

ok, dang, now I need to see Hud.

I still think the most famous line of her career is "Klaatu barada nikto."

Someone's got Hud all chopped up on YouTube. (Do people really watch whole movies this way?) The scene I mentioned above runs from about 4:00 to 6:15:

Depends if you've got a playlist going.
