After a false start in which it ultimately became clear I'd left too many important shows out and included too much junk, a small committee rebuilt the pool of contenders. I used a randomizer once more, but then tweaked the seeding just a little for the sake of competitiveness.

(There was also a suggestion of including blank options for shows voters may not have seen, but at 8 shows per group and 16 variations of those 8 shows, adding a blank option for each configuration would crowd the options, so since every show in the bracket is good, blind guessing will really do no harm. Use that method with discretion.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

Fun! But how'd you decide which shows to include?

Mordy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

It was a process: What's on TV, ILX? It's the American Sitcom Tournament Round 1/Group 1

30 Rock vs. Laverne & Shirley
The Larry Sanders Show vs. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The Monkees vs. The Jeffersons
The Golden Girls vs. Sex and the City

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

goddammit

why the hell did you put "The Monkees" up against "The Jeffersons"

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

In short, people rightfully complained about better shows missing from the bracket, so we decided to scrap it after deciding on a perfect 64 and starting over.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

I thought "30 Rock" vs "Laverne & Shirley" hurt and then I read a little further

this is the exact opposite of the food poll where I think every choice is going to be incredibly difficult and painful (well aside from giving Larry Sanders and SitC the gasface)

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

Nice matchups!

Bag Smart, Street Stupid (Eazy), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

I guess no poll could contain every choice, tho it does seem like an oversight to poll Coach but not poll Party Down.

Mordy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

(Tho what do I know. Maybe ILX has a bunch of hidden Coach fans.)

Mordy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

so... no 'sledge hammer!'. really?

unchill english bro (history mayne), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

good god I just looked at the whole bracket, it's like neverending hurt

except for "I Love Lucy" vs "Scrubs"; I really LIKE "Scrubs" but come on

xp: Yes, it's a total oversight to include a really popular, well-regarded sitcom that did really well in the ratings and lasted a long time over a series no one watched that got canceled halfway through one season.

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

party down had two seasons, both of which were finished before it got canceled FYI

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

Coach is well-regarded?

Mordy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

wait dan you dont like larry sanders

not necessarily agreeing with dude, just being mr. facts

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for two shows I've never seen, just so I could vote for Larry Sanders. Please don't let it lose to Will Smith...Just in terms of familiarity, I could see that happening.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

30 rock fresh prince jeffersons golden girls

seger ros (crüt), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

lol you can see how much attention I paid to "Party Down"

"Coach" won 2 Emmys and was a top 20 show for 6 out of 8 seasons; that fits my criteria for "well-regarded"

I've seen like maybe 15 minutes of Larry Sanders and basically consider it a non-entity because I don't know it at all.

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

dan you should def give larry sanders a shot, its pretty fucking awesome srsly

the hardest decision for me was bracket 4 because aw betty white and all but the golden girls is like eating sugar cubes and sex and the city is terrible so i would prefer to vote against both of them

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

thx for redoing the bracket, Fever, much improved.

Can I recommend including a summary of each thread's matchups at the top, above the poll options.

Laverne & Shirley (lol nostalgia), Larry Sanders, Jeffersons, Golden Girls (winner by default since fuck SATC).

30 Rock, Sanders, Monkees, Golden Girls

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

can't be a seinfeld / simpsons final xp

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

30 Rock, Larry Sanders, Monkees (not seen The Jeffersons! Sorry to The Jeffersons if The Monkees win by one vote), Golden Girls.

fair enuf on the not including a blank vote, I don't know how to calculate how many options there would have to be, but my estimate is 1 shitload.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

my estimate is 24

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

can't be a seinfeld / simpsons final xp

That's on purpose.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

I still think you should include passes btw

cause 24 really isn't that many options

and otherwise I'm voting against all the old people shows

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

Voted same as Merdeyeux. Predicting Golden Girls v SATC to be the biggest margin of victory (also lol, was that one really randomised what with the whole "SATC = Golden Girls minus thirty years, look, sarky one, prim yet dirty one, slutty one, wise-ass one" non-meme that people tried to make a thing?)

ailsa, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

That one was definitely strategic.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

I still think you should include passes btw

cause 24 really isn't that many options

it isn't 24, it's 64

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

oh I was only thinking one (pass) per option

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

... that's STILL 64, unless I'm misunderstanding you?

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

okay my math is that there are 8 different 1 vs 1s here - like this

30 Rock, The Larry Sanders Show, The Monkees, The Golden Girls
30 Rock, The Larry Sanders Show, The Monkees, Sex and the City

and this would add

30 Rock, The Larry Sanders Show, The Monkees, (pass)

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

no wait I think you're right

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

Highly subjective reading of the big board: it's very weighted towards the right side. A minute ago I was worried about Larry Sanders losing to the Fresh Prince, now I'm thinking it could conceivably advance to the finals.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, you have 4 matchups with 3 options (A, B or pass) for each one

this means you have 4^3 = 64 possible different combinations

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but maximum one (pass) - your math includes (pass), (pass), (pass), (pass)

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

Glad I didn't include passes in the food fight.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

oh I see

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

I think 24 is right if there's max one pass

anyway this isn't gonna matter after the first round when all the shows from the 50s are gone

iatee, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm, I've seen more than 3 or 4 episodes of only about 24 of these shows. And probably half of those are shows that I haven't watched since I was a kid (like Coach or Night Court or Leave It to Beaver), so I don't really have strong feelings about them. :/

jaymc, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

ya I was thinking of passes available for everything (inc. the ILXor favourite 'no opinion but feel the need to vote anyway' option). Feelin dum for not realising that the number of poll options was just a matter of power of, though. :'(

boy o boy looking at the full schedule that's a lot of crazy tough options for a first round. It's like Sophie's Choice if Sophie had about 50 children and was only able to take half.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

A minute ago I was worried about Larry Sanders losing to the Fresh Prince, now I'm thinking it could conceivably advance to the finals.

It would have to get past some heavyweights like Frasier, Cheers, Newhart, 30 Rock, Three's Company, and so on. The only weight the right side might have is that there are more shows on there that have semi-active threads on ILX at any given time.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

i know the right answer is larry sanders, but then again i'm having a hard time not voting for fresh prince because of my childhood basically

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I'm confident it would beat Three's Company--I mean, I'd like to think so, anyway. The other four you mention, not so sure. It's a longshot, granted, but I do think it's conceivable. The big question with Larry Sanders in any match-up, I think, will be how many people have actually seen it. I'd be very surprised if anyone who ever saw six or more episodes felt blase about it.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Nostalgia's pretty powerful; I totally understand that.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

well, watching 6 episodes of ANY show kind of indicates feelings stronger than "blase" doesn't it?

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

I've only seen a couple eps all the way through, but clips of several others. However, I will stan for Three's Company until the end of time (and then some).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

I could name many shows I've idly watched a few times that I could take or leave..."blase" might be overstating it.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

the hardest I've ever laughed at anything is likely the late-era "Three's Company" episode when Jack and Terri" think they've found a dead body in a trunk in their new neighbor's apartment

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

also "a few times" <> 6

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

We're really splitting hairs here...Let me rephrase, and I could be completely wrong: I think most anyone who's seen The Larry Sanders Show at least six times would be ready to vote for it over almost anything. Not absolutely, of course, but almost anything. (No, I don't have specific numbers for "most anyone" or "almost.")

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

Just for the sake of convenience (and to bump the thread), here are the matchups in easy-to-digest form:

30 Rock vs. Laverne & Shirley
The Larry Sanders Show vs. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The Monkees vs. The Jeffersons
The Golden Girls vs. Sex and the City

30 Rock - 69
Laverne & Shirley - 12

The Larry Sanders Show - 54
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - 26

The Monkees - 42
The Jeffersons - 39

The Golden Girls - 65
Sex and the City - 17

uh something isnt quite right, because the vote totals arent quite the same

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's because all the options available didn't receive votes.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

But maybe not? I used to be able to add quite well, so maybe I've lost it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

first bracket has 81
2nd has 80
3rd has 81
4th has 82

none of them are within the margin of error tho so idk if its worth worrying about
