After a false start in which it ultimately became clear I'd left too many important shows out and included too much junk, a small committee rebuilt the pool of contenders. I used a randomizer once more, but then tweaked the seeding just a little for the sake of competitiveness.

(There was also a suggestion of including blank options for shows voters may not have seen, but at 8 shows per group and 16 variations of those 8 shows, adding a blank option for each configuration would crowd the options, so since every show in the bracket is good, blind guessing will really do no harm. Use that method with discretion.)

Don't forget about this one too!

Arrested Development vs. Sanford & Son
Newhart vs. Barney Miller
I Dream of Jeannie vs. The Brady Bunch
Taxi vs. Coach

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

This is probably the place to say that I think Coach is a lousy show and that Craig T. Nelson is an all time dud human being.

Mordy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

lol after all of the boostering I did in the other thread establishing "Coach"'s cred, I'm voting "Taxi"

Arrested Development, Newhart, I Dream of Jeannie, Taxi

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

AD, Newhart, da Bunch, Taxi -- don't care that much about the first three but I wasn't going to miss the chance to vote for "Taxi."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

;_; this is going to be like AD a bazillion, S&S 1, isn't it

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

I think Redd Foxx is funnier than any motherfucker on Arrested Development.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

sanford and son is totally solid, but man arrested development is prob one of the top contenders, and rightfully so.

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

For the next lot can you do the summary of who is against who in the initial post again? Just makes it easier to make the decision and then look for the right entry rather than scanning up and down the entries in order to choose.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

the thing about "Sanford and Son" is that Red Foxx ACTUALLY DIED because of it, which is pretty fucking hardcore

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, WmC reminded me in the other thread that I forgot to do it. Won't forget in future groups. xp

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

Sanford, Newhart, Jeannie, Taxi. That second one was tough -- Barney Miller was so goddamned great, and boasted not one but two great deadpans in Abe Vigoda and Jack Soo, but as a comedian and as a foil Bob Newhart was just un-fuck-withable.

a mix of music (Lionel Ritchie) and kicks (my tongue) (Phil D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

No way, he died when he was doing that show with Della Reese whatever it was called. xps

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

Instinctively voted against Sanford as an over-protective Brit. What's the full story re: the death, then?

xpost to Johnny, ah yes, just saw that myself. Sorry, didn't mean to hassle!

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

He died of a heart attack. When it hit him, everyone thought he was doing the "Elizabeth! I'm coming!" bit and laughed at him as he fell unconscious to the ground. He never regained consciousness.

Sanford, Barney, Jeannie, Taxi

I've never seen AD! Should probably correct this oversight.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'm currently watching AD on Netflix Instant Watch, and I'm about 6 episodes in. Not funny enough yet for me to vote for it over "Sanford," and I can't vote based on other people's opinion of it.

Thanks for putting the lions' share of things I haven't seen in one poll to lessen the ones I have to sit out. Saying that, I can see a couple of tough decisions coming, and would rather have been able to think "well, haven't seen it, so frasier evidently better" or whatevs.

ailsa, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

my vote: Sanford & Son, Newhart, I Dream of Jeannie, Taxi

Sanford & Son, Newhart, I Dream of Jeannie, Taxi

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

To me, Barney Miller should win this whole thing but that is probably like saying Pavement is the greatest band of all time.

That said, I think Barney Miller is about my favorite sitcom ever.

earlnash, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

Is Barney Miller on dvd? I'm not on Netflix, but maybe my library has it.

Just for the sake of convenience (and to bump the thread), here are the matchups in easy-to-digest form:

Arrested Development vs. Sanford & Son
Newhart vs. Barney Miller
I Dream of Jeannie vs. The Brady Bunch
Taxi vs. Coach

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Where are the other six polls?

kenan, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

They're coming in packs of two at a time, unlike the completely overwhelming madness that was the food/is the drink polls.

I'm sad for Barney Miller. I certainly voted for it. How many of you have even seen it? I MEAN REALLY SEEN IT?

kenan, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

I feel totally burritoed.

kenan, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

If Barney Miller hadn't been up against Newhart I would have voted for it. Alas, I could not.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

RIP 12th Precinct.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

Newhart was great, but nothing next to The Bob Newhart Show, which I spent about four hours watching on Hulu last night, actually. That's some great shit. I may stop and take a picture of the view of his building from the opening credits on the way over to my girlfriend's place. It's totally on the way.

kenan, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

Arrested Development - 51
Sanford & Son - 20

Newhart - 55
Barney Miller - 19

I Dream of Jeannie - 51
The Brady Bunch - 23

Taxi - 68
Coach - 6

I think this is right. I suppose AD and Jeannie both had 51 points while their challenger had different totals because not all the options received votes? Does that sound right?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia--you will be missed.

clemenza, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

nah like i said on the other thread all the pairs have to have an equal number of votes that is the same as the total votes (74) so theres something missing in there somewhere

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah arrested dev has 54 by my count

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

oh okay...stupid Windows calculator!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)

Arrested Development, Newhart, Jeannie and Taxi advance!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 August 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

I honestly thought Sanford & Son would put up a bigger fight.
