Surprising (to me, at least) that another expected favorite went down. Roseanne R.I.P. Groups 7 & 8 are all that remain of the first round. A few big names are included.

The Andy Griffith Show vs. The Simpsons
Family Matters vs. Family Guy
Leave it to Beaver vs. The Honeymooners
WKRP in Cincinnati vs. Married... With Children

The Simpsons, Family Guy, Leave it to Beaver, WKRP in Cincinnati

Mayberry is every bit as fun as Springfield, tbh, but there are more sight gags on The Simpsons and I'm a big fan of sight gags.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Honeymooners, WKRP in Cincinnati

I still think of "the man in the moon" as Jackie Gleason.

I know The Honeymooners is important and all, but I never really found it all that funny. Jackie Gleason didn't reach his peak until Smokey & The Bandit imo.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

imo that's weird.

Poor Andy Griffith, for real. Somebody had to take the bullet, I guess. We really ought to have left it out of the poll altogether, because it's so obviously the winner.

Barney Fyfe, you were a good man.

WKRP is one of the few shows that I own the entire series of. They're shitty rips from VHS -- or maybe they're great rips from VHS that are still kinda shitty -- but they do have all the original music, and it's kind of a treasure of my DVD collection, because no one will ever be able to license all the original music. There's just too goddamn much of it. And WKRP with stand-in music is utterly absurd.

I have to think about Leave It to Beaver vs. The Honeymooners. I don't know if there are five minutes of TV that make me laugh more than Art Carney trying to teach Gleason to golf ("Hellooooooo, ball").

SImpsons, FG, Honeymooners, WKRP. No way am I voting for The Urkel Show. And Mayberry brought me much joy as a kid, but The Simpsons may be THE single consistently funniest show to ever appear on television. Seasons 1-10 are unimpeachably great.

Honeymooners over Beav is a tougher choice, but Gleason was just so great. To this day, just about any commercial for a kitchen gizmo is met by me with, "Can it core a apple?"

a mix of music (Lionel Ritchie) and kicks (my tongue) (Phil D.), Friday, 20 August 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

I actually started that brag about WKRP to say that even though I didn't vote for it, Married... With Children is a great show. It's almost kinda special to me. It was my favorite uncle's favorite show, and he would extoll its comedic virtues upon the deaf ears of whoever would listen. This was my uncle who was queer as a seven dollar bill. He worked for 20 years at at fabric factory. I have (a scan of) a picture of him dressed as Patti Labelle for Halloween. He met her once, and she signed the back of it. He died of AIDS in 1993. If I could have one dead relative back, there would be no contest.

Anyway, point is, Married... with Children was his favorite show. And it really did do irony before irony was cool.

Why did I vote for Family Matters over Family Guy? Because ironic Urkel references are far funnier than anything on Family Guy. And ironic Urkel references ain't funny.

So you don't like Family Guy. Noted.

I find prolonged exposure to Family Guy makes me irritable, but an episode every once in a while is a good time.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

It's a smart show, but it's so formulaic that sometimes it would be better off not being "smart".
