one of my friends just posted this movie trailer on her fb page today and its made me think what classic teen movies have i not seen in the vein of like dazed and confused, foxes and the virgin suicides. so yeah, foreign language (not necc) pretentious teen movies.

yah probably. i thought of that but i'm not sure either. I have a feeling there's tons of awesome french teen movies w/ moody chainsmoking teens. its also, i mean, i don't just mean "movies about teenagers" bc that isn't really what at teen movie is. I mean, its kindof contrarian to go looking for non-american ones because the "teen movie" is such an american thing, a certain amerophilia is impt. maybe?

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

This was on the other day.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 20 August 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

I honestly don't think I've seen any genuine "teen movies" from other countries... having a hard time coming up with examples. must be some Britishes ones that I've seen at least...

I believe Gurinder Chadha (of Bend It like Beckham) recently directed a film called Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, which suggests plenty of UK existence for this sort of thing

I also feel certain Canada and Australia must have contributed here

Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging is a brilliant middlegrade book (with sequels!) from the UK. Still my favorite slang for the act of shaving: Operation Smoothy Legs.

They show this movie on Nickelodeon here all the time. I haven't seen it but a friend of mine goes bonkers every time she sees a commercial for it.

despite stephan's presence, i didn't like that one bit.

this is surprisingly hard to come up with examples for.

jed_, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

acoleuthic, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

was it just rereleased or something?

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Friday, 20 August 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

No, it's from 1970.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, REreleased...I think it played the festival circuit in 2008 because of a dvd reissue.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

has anyone seen this? i remember it getting 5 stars in Neon magazine when it came out first.

Michael B, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

no but wow

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a huge fan of Saint Clara, an Israeli supernatural teen movie from the 90's, made by the same folks who made Waltz With Bashir.

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, he totally is! There are so many close-ups on his eyes of him just singing dreamy songs in German. You would love it ico. (It's on Netflix iirc)

Actually the guy I thought was the hottest in this movie turns out to be a supercreep who sells all their fun out to the state & gets mad everyone isn't being Communist enough.

full of country goodness and green pea-ness (Abbbottt), Friday, 20 August 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

oh man, Hot Summer is amazing. I saw a documentary about the Eastern European musical industry, in which the stars of Hot Summer, now middle-aged, reminisced about the days when they were young and beautiful and dominated the East German pop charts.

clotpoll, Friday, 20 August 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

theres a 90's german movie about two teenage boys, one is about to be sent to borstal, so they have a night of fun and get into hi-jinks. quite funny and poignant. i remember they get challenged by a romanian circus act at one point. the name of the movie escapes me though.

Michael B, Friday, 20 August 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

Some Quebec ones, maybe:
C.R.A.Z.Y.
1981 (okay so the kids in this are 11/12 but I'm putting it in because it's still a 'coming of age' sort of thing)
Maman est chez le coiffeur

The director of the last one has made a couple other films that might fall into this category but I haven't seen them.

There's also The Trotsky, which takes place in Quebec but is in English.
