the enduring teen comedies of the late 90s/00s

so i was watching "american pie 2" last night, and aside from it being pretty fun though not that good and much more misogynistic than i could've realized at the age of 13, it made me wonder about what the enduring teen comedies of my generation are/are going to be, because i don't think that kids now are going back to 'american pie' (though i'm not positive of that)

john hughes comedies are still relevant/still resonate w/ people my age and i'm sure younger -- i don't know anyone who hasn't seen 'ferris beuller's day off' at least once -- but i couldn't think of anything that would be like that for kids in 2020 aside from maybe 'superbad'

anyway, enduring teen comedies of this time period -- do we have any & if so what are they

yeah "mean girls" def

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

If you'd started in the mid 90's I'd have said Clueless and Election, and both are better than Ferris Bueller.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

I was about to suggest Clueless and Election! What about Legally Blonde? Ten Things I Hate About You?

ailsa, Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

clueless for sure but that's still a bit before the time period that i'm talking about

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

i would say yes on 'ten things i hate about you' not so sure about 'legally blonde'

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Can't Hardly Wait

a mix of music (Lionel Ritchie) and kicks (my tongue) (Phil D.), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

I ended up seeing "Not Another Teen Movie" at my friend's house so many times that it is teen movie comfort food for me.

Show Me Love

Also the first couple of Scary Movie movies, at least.

"not another teen movie" is great

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

'election' is 1999 so it's in

may as well have 'rushmore' too -- not sure either of these were marketed as teen movies, though 'election' was an mtv production...

'10 things' is dece

unchill english bro (history mayne), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Election wasn't marketed as a teen movie, but it has teen movie written all over it, which is why I thought I could get away with Legally Blonde as well.

I will always watch Ten Things I Hate About You when I come across it on the telly, so that automatically ranks it up there with all John Hughes movies for me afaic.

ailsa, Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

"Can't Hardly Wait" is a little gem. I HOPE it endures.

Had no idea people under 30 had seen Ferris Beuller. Good for them!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, love "Can't Hardly Wait"

christopher dullan (Tape Store), Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

O is pretty good. (Prep school Othello with Mekhi Phifer, Josh Hartnett and Julia Styles.) But no one saw it at the time.

ithappens, Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

I also think "Election" transcends the genre in a way most others here don't, it is a "teen comedy" in the sense that "Mulholland Drive" is a film noir (or a horror movie) -- I mean it IS but to call it that seems off-kilter.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

I will always watch Ten Things I Hate About You when I come across it on the telly, so that automatically ranks it up there with all John Hughes movies for me afaic.

Yes. Ten things rules.

They've all been mentioned but I would have said Mean Girls, Can't Hardly Wait, 10 Things and Bring it On.

What is Show me Love? I don't remember that name at all.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

I need to see this Can't Hardly Wait.

If Bring It On gets in, then Drop Dead Gorgeous should as well.

ailsa, Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Get Over It is good.

i guess the prevalence of kevin williamson type metatextuality kindof circumvented a lot of the wholesome nostalgia that teen movies rely on and you ended up w/ a lot of horror movies and this sort of stuff

I don't think they are teenage so does Harold & Kumar count? Cos those films are FUNNEH

COMEDIES PPL COMEDIES

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

but i mean, the teen comedies that really stuck w/ me (apart from ghost world) were in gen. horror comedies that tried really hard to be ironic and knowing and basically total antidotes to the john hughes type stuff of the eighties. you can never go home again.

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

"harold & kumar" is a good one

nick & norah is one of the three worst movies i saw in this time period

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

also i'm more interested in what's going to endure, not necessarily what is the best

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

scream, the faculty, disturbing behaviour, teaching mrs tingle

i think if you factor in dawson's creek there's a real case to be made for kevin williamson as the teen movie auteur of the 90's

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

nick and norah is one of the worst movies made by anyone ever

Peter Sollett is a v talented director and you all have horrible taste if you seriously think nick and norah is one of the worst movies ever (in reality, that's just reactionary bullshit, you hate the 'indie' theme, if you actually watched the movie without baggage you'd discover that it's AT WORST innocuous)

back to Dawson's, i mean, fuck, for all its melodrama, this scene still totally resonates:

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

also if that movie accurately portrays the "vibrancy" of NY then...

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

it accurately portrays the vibrancy of a ny street shut down for the filming of a movie

I have to go to work right now, but while I don't entirely agree with it (the cinematography is great!), this is far, far more intelligent commentary on NICK AND NORAH than anything you all are saying: http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/2008/10/nick-and-norahs-infinite-playlist/

guys should i go to tape store's work and berate him about 'nick & norah'

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

actually, i didn't know anything about that movie, and at most, it does seem pretty innocuous and silly.

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

i thought that same thing but it was actually insulting

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

hm. kinda wanna watch it now...

i mean, i also totally admit to having a weird desire to caress Michael Cera's thighs, but that's neither here nor there.

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

that is not a weird desire

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

anyone over the age of, like, 16 can't help but think "this is just utter fucking bullshit"

except tape store i guess

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

"harold & kumar" is a good one

have you even seen this film? it starts with a guy working in an office. a teen comedy it is not.

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

nick and norah isn't that bad but man alive does tape store have bad taste in movies

unchill english bro (history mayne), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

i mean tbf to Tape Store, i also think that it's impossible to not find such a movie charming if one hasn't been in the horrid vortex of vapidity that is that specific area of Manhattan. it is a shitshow of massive, terrible proportions.

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

i probably would hate it just based on its location shots.

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

tbf to tape store nothing, like srsly, its a movie you could show it to ur parents if you want to project a really comfortingly bland version of ur "indie lifestyle"

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

"pineapple express" isn't about teens obv, but when i saw it at midnight opening night, i was w/in the three oldest people in the theater

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that still doesnt count

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

I have quite a high tolerance of tweemances and romcoms and teen movies (and would stan for Dawson's Creek forever), and I can't summon more than a meh for Nick and Norah.

ailsa, Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

i actually suggest that anyone who doesn't stan for Dawson's Creek is a fucking rapist who needs to be shot.

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

teen comedies are set during the summer after high school when the head of the football team/most popular guy/secretly cute nerd finds himself caught up in an sweet romance w/ the head of the cheerleading squad/most popular girl/secretly cute nerdette where the slow blossoming of their romance despite the opposition of their peer group represents their burgeoning maturity and newfound senses of self against the shackles of conformity. they are not about twenty somethings w/ crappy jobs

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

I loved Dawsons Creek at the time but I don't feel the same way about it that I do for similar shows. Why did it never get canonised? Because James VDB was so fucking lame?

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

i actually suggest that anyone who doesn't stan for Dawson's Creek is a fucking rapist who needs to be shot.

My generation had 90210, thanks.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

I rewatched the whole of Dawson's recently, and I do believe a better protagonist than Dawson would have improved it greatly. But the peripheral characters (esp. Jen, Pacey, Audrey and Andie) were always the real stars of the show.

I would quite like to watch 90210 again, tbh.

ailsa, Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

I've been thinking of starting a thread for a while now about how no-one makes quirky family comedies anymore (karate kid og, ghostbusters, gremlins, home alone, goonies etc.) that I feel should be mentioned on this thread...

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

well all those family comedies are just animated now

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

ahem, Alfred, i grew up watching the original 90210, too. it's just that by the time i was in fifth grade, they were all in college and i was like 'fuck these people.'

johnsons in my pubescence, other than my own (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

idk, there's lots of movies that ppl don't make anymore. You're not gonna get a big musical in the vein of like seven brides for seven brothers again. tho maybe that's a bad eg.

plax (ico), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I watched 90210 with great pleasure, fully realizing these weren't people. "Dawson's Creek" was as soaper too, but one with pretensions. The six or seven episodes I've seen reminded me (in a good way, mostly) of 90210's flirtation with earnestness in its first two seasons.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

idk maybe you had a really bad cold then, but they are really different shows
