No choice for "LYE-er"?

Aimless, Monday, 23 August 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Jesus, this has me questioning how I pronounce it. At least in terms of how I pronounce things, LAW-yer and LOY-er are very, very similar. I actually do say "attorney" most of the time though.

i dunno. parts of the northeast-to-midwest? i'm just guessing. that's where i've heard LORE-yer.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

"Loy-yer". The people who say "law-yer" also say "cot" and "caught" differently, right?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

What are those last two supposed to sound like? "Lo" as in "lo and behold"? I can't imagine anyone saying that.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

Being a Britishes I say "caught" and "cot" differently and pronounce it "loy-uh", not sure whether to click loy-er or loy-ya since I'm mostly non-rhotic but don't double the "y" sound

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

I say cot and caught differently, but don't say law-yer. loy-er

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I guess I say "loy-er".xposts

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

I guess what I'm wondering is whether the people who say "law-yer" also pronounce "aw" differently from how I pronounce it (which is the same as, or close to, my "ah" and short "o" sounds). Because I'd be surprised to hear a native speaker pronouncing "lawyer" with my "aw" sound.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

"thief" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ha

To most English people the difference between LAW and LORE is obscure.

Alba, Monday, 23 August 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

LOI-yer; also cot rhymes with yacht and caught rhymes with ought

Is it remotely possible that Shannara might have been good? (los blue jeans), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

It's neither LAW-yer nor LOY-yer, but some halfwayhouse bewteen the two stressed first syllables together with a twisting together of the W-y sound, so that it's barely even two syllables. But I have a fucked-up accent, which is why I say solicitor.

calumerio, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:47 (fifteen years ago)

LOY-er. straight up. sometimes with a slight though discernable LAW-yerish inflection, but mostly just plain LOY-er. one who loys.

Jeff, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

If I'm not thinking about it, I say "loy-yer." If I am, I say "law-yer," because I assume that "loy-er" is some kind of redneck rural Delaware way of saying it. Actually, honestly, I usually just try to avoid the whole issue and say "attorney."

Also, cot rhymes with yacht and caught I say like, "cawit" or something fucked up like that. I need to either stop moving places with distinct pronunciation styles, or stay in Chicago long enough that I'm all dis dat dese dose deep dish whatever.

Jenny, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

("Cot", "caught", "yacht", and "ought" all rhyme for me.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

(My gf has two different vowels there where I have one so I know the sounds you're talking about.)
