Anyway, that is Glenn Kotche and Jeff Tweedy of the up and coming neo-Americana band Wilco and Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee of the up and coming Canadian progressive rock outfit Rush. There is admittedly a connection between Jeff and Geddy, but, to coin a phrase, the photo makes me happy all the same.

Because Americans presuming everyone else on the internet is American is one of the more annoying aspects of the online experience.

You can know who someone is without recognizing their face, I know who Alex Lifeson is, it's nice to put a name to face or, in this case, several names to several faces.

Such a weird question to me. I know exactly who Wilco and Rush are, but would never recognise any of their members. Giving their names immediately gives me context that "four generic white blokes in a photo" does not.

Namecheck "Wee Jimmy Krankie" all you want, and I'm still not going to know who that is, but you don't hear me getting mad about it. Whether it's labeled or not, I'm still going to think, "Huh. Never heard of 'em," and move on.

But what if you did know who it was by name, but not by sight, and you would have gotten enjoyment out of it?

Yeah, it's kind of the point of posting on a message board - you're interacting with a whole bunch of people, not just your friend Jim The Rush Fan. The thread is for everyone who is passing by, and it's helpful to add context so more people can enjoy it. I would say it also makes people more likely to join in a discussion about the post if they know who it is, but we pretty much never get as much discussion about any picture as we do when we get into these meta fights... maybe that was JiC's plan all along.

I didn't mean to start a meta fight, I just assumed enough people would recognize the members of Rush and Wilco, my bad. And I thought them a surprising combo because, despite both being rock bands, one is an indie/hipster/dad-rock Americana band and one is a prog-rock warhorse. It would be like, I dunno, Radiohead hanging with the Eagles.

I was being silly when I suggested that, don't worry. I don't find the pairing that unexpected but I get your reasoning now you've explained, and I do prefer it when people give the names but it's not like in failing to do so you've deeply besmirched the sanctity of the thread or anything, you're fine.

I also think it's totally ok to post pictures of people you don't see together often, even if it's not massively unexpected. The "makes you happy" part is more important to me.

I'd also love to see more threads focus on Rush, especially non music threads.

I thought the guy on the left was Jerry O'Connell, and I've listened to Rush and Wilco, but aren't so clued in on what they look like now (or even then). Once Geddy was pointed out I did think "Oh yeah, of course."

I also posted a pic of Damo Suzuki and Daevid Allen because it made me happy, even though it was not really unexpected that they would be seen together.
