tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

aren't you worried you might skew the results by putting "queer" right in the title?

I.C.P. Freely (bernard snowy), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

these some of the variants I've seen -- tho it seems the main contention is whether L precedes G or vice versa

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

the addition of queer seems a tad redundant?

mein voight-kampff (corey), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

uh, i tend to think of 'queer' as a pretty broadly inclusive term, which i guess is why i used it in the title -- and why i only think one Q is necessary

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

oh okay, I can see that

mein voight-kampff (corey), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

if I'm not mistaken, wasn't there a campus group at Harvard called HUGGABLES, which stood (awkwardly) for the Harvard University Graduate Gay / Bisexual / Lesbian alliance?

the tune is space, Friday, 27 August 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

hold on lemme just fire up my "memories of Harvard" module...

I.C.P. Freely (bernard snowy), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

imo queer covers a lot of things not included in 'LGBT' like hetero kink & BDSM & such? but i do not know if other people also consider those things to be 'queer'

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

HUGGABLES is great!

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Don't you want somebody to hug.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

G vs L, tho -- i tend to see the leading G more often but idk, male privilege blah blah & i think academic lesbians deserve a lot of credit for conceiving all these categories together as a 'community'? is my impression

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

have been bitched out for querying the addition of 'queer'

it seems to me like queer transcends/includes the other categories and you might just call yr group 'queer'

otoh wtf do i know, being cis/het/male/etc

Was almost going to do this poll too.

Eric H., Friday, 27 August 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

I've always thought it was GLBT, but maybe that's because I'm GLBT over-the-hill.

Eric H., Friday, 27 August 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

I have to deal with goddamn alphabet soup every day.

I got a stern talking-to for not liking "questioning" but I agree with the people who called me out about it actually

Adding queer can mean "misfits welcome," in the sense of society's misfits. Maybe it should be LGBTM.

A Chart Hit of Some Sort (Eazy), Friday, 27 August 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

I am going to take you all in for questioning

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 August 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

one girl at school used to go around saying lbgtq2 where the 2 stood for 'two-spirit' people

max, Friday, 27 August 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

huh. I woulda just assumed it meant "two Q's"

I.C.P. Freely (bernard snowy), Friday, 27 August 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

no

max, Friday, 27 August 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

i was in the class with her where we read about two-spirit people & other native american conceptions of gender/sexuality

max, Friday, 27 August 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

the 'questioning' thing i don't really identify with but otoh i think it's a good thing if applied in certain settings eg youth centers where u are dealing with young kids who may not want to label themselves as 'gay'/whatever

but i still think one Q is enough

xp i would be interested to know if there are ppl who identify as 2-spirit as opposed to another label!

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

The final insult: straights are responsible for the alphabet soup, at least at my university.

filed under 'B'?

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

"queer" all the way. i seem to remember my undergrad university's gay student union changing over time from the "lgbtu" to the easier-on-the-brain "qsu."

I kind of do, in my mind...I know this is really goofy. But when I read about that concept I thought, 'wow...that's me.' It's a private thing I don't really talk about though.
