when you are sharing a bed, i mean.

for a frame of reference, let's say that we are standing at the foot of the bed gazing headward.

I believe I read somewhere that in a male/female relationship men tend to prefer sleeping nearest to the exit, perhaps to protect their lady (or maybe for a quick exit?), and realised that is what I always tend to do.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

i sleep on the left. because, i think, my bed was at one time against a wall, and being a warm person, i needed to be nearer the fan.

now there is no going back.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

i think the pertinent choices are

- nearer the wall
- nearer the door

me, i sleep on whichever side she hasn't taken

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

being a warm person

awww. see, this is actually true about mookieproof.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

I sleep on the right, cos my wife wanted to be nearer to the cot when we had babies sleeping in the room.

Neggin' you crapative (NickB), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 09:55 (fifteen years ago)

This poll is flawed because, as mentioned, it's not the purely left/right positioning that matters, but one's location in the bed compared to walls/furniture/door etc.

krakow, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

wow I never thought of this dynamic in terms of relative position to doors & furniture. where's the "in separate rooms" comedy option?

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 10:10 (fifteen years ago)

On the side closest to the wall, because my wife can't stand being blocked in. So far, the left side has always been closest to the wall. Back when I slept woth other people, I tended to take the right side, regardless of the orientation of the bed within a room. I really dn't care too much though.

landover menace (kkvgz), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 10:17 (fifteen years ago)

there is a side i always sleep on but it has nothing to do with the door or walls. but is it left or right in relation to what?

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:07 (fifteen years ago)

i mean left when you're standing facing the bed or left when you're on your back?

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:08 (fifteen years ago)

bed left and bed right

just sayin, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

ok well i sleep on the right always. i think this is because i am left handed and it feels like i can reach things on the nightstand or floor better

xp oh oops

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

the side nearest the exit, always. which on my bed at home is the right as-seen-from-the-foot.

'Sleep on the left side

I sleep on the left side, eveb when staying at relatives, friends or hotels.

I rarely sleep in a bed with another person these days but always seems to be a rightie. Same going solo, for this house is too hot all year long and its closer to the window.

I voted and posted using the frame of reference of me being in the damn bed.

landover menace (kkvgz), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

Right because I prefer to be further away from the door. lol. But I think when Elisabeth was waking up a LOT in the night, then I'd sleep closer to the door. It freaked my husband out how quickly I would react when she did her first yelp.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:55 (fifteen years ago)

stevie, were you sleeping at all or did the sound instantly wake you?

landover menace (kkvgz), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

I was sleeping! My husband said it was crazy how fast I would react. As in standing next to the bed and then running next door (unless he could stop me). I guess it's wrong to go to the baby that quickly, they have to be able to fall asleep by themselves.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

Currently on the left, nearest the door. Having a 'side' is definitely more to do with comparative location in relation to doors etc.

emil.y, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Always on the right for some reason. Doesn't seem to be correlated with door/wall positioning.

seandalai, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

In a single bed I like to be right up against the wall. In a double I like to be able to get out easily in case I need the bathroom or whatever, so nearest the door.

Though left on my own in a double I swap sides all night, lie diagonally across it, and other antisocial things. Have got a bit used to this and find it hard to sleep in a shared bed, to be honest.

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

Whichever side is more open to the room, so I guess the "quick exit" option. But it's more about the fact that I have to have a nightstand I can reach. I need a place for a reading light and to put my glasses, where I can find 'em in the morning with a 0% risk of stepping on them first.

Jesus doesn't want me for a thundercloud (Laurel), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

On the top side seeing as otherwise I fall to the floor.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

I sleep on the right side, next to the wall and closest to the door. I used to have a little bit of room between the bed and the wall, like just enough room to get out of bed, but then we had to put the cosleeper next to the bed and our bedroom is small so we had to move the bed to make room so now I'm smack dab against the wall, which has actually been nice because it's been really hot this summer and the wall helps cool me down.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

i sleep on a king size bed in a peasant size bedroom. this means that between the two side walls of the room there's just enough space for the bed, pressed into a corner, and then immediately next to it a nightstand, pressed into the other corner. because we have a dog who requires pretty much nightly trips outside, and because we are unwilling to install a "dog door" (aka "doggy door," "dog flap," "doggy flap"), and because it was her idea to adopt this dog, i sleep on the wall side and my wife sleeps on the side where you can actually easily step out of bed instead of having to either inchworm your way to the foot exit or roll over the person next to you.

OTM. I always sleep nearer the door.

Squirrel! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

I sleep on the left side, and I do suspect that this has something to do with that side being closer to the door.

Falkor Johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

nearer the door, nearer the heart, that's what i always say

del griffith, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Left side. I used to sleep on my tummy with my left hand up by my head; being on the left side allowed me to dip my elbow comfortably over the edge of the mattress. Now I sleep on my side or back more, but I've gotten used to having the left side of the bed.

Arvo Pärty (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

Right side of the bed, farthest from the door.

female, left side, next to the wall. the door is parallel to my feet.

i don't think there's a reason, it just worked out that way.

I sleep on the right. I sleep there because tehre's a shitload of stuff on the left side

i sleep on the left side, the right side is used as overflow space for socks/underwear/t-shirts that don't fit in my dresser

ciderpress, Thursday, 2 September 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

I sleep on the left at present. This has varied in the past. I like this arrangement, because I tend to spend more time sleeping on my right side, and therefore I spend more of the night turned toward my wife, rather than with my back turned to her.

Aimless, Friday, 3 September 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

I missed the part about sharing a bed so minus 1 from male and varies.

EDB, Friday, 3 September 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

And yes, the question made much more sense after reading that.
