one of my all-time favourite steeplejack-turned-television personalities. in fact, probably, my all-time favourite television personality.

aye, talk about how great he is, y'know.

oh aye, a lot of people dont realise how fantastic fred is. Cuddly, straight talking but never losing the edge. I wouldn't be surprised if he were one day exposed as the third in the holy trinity of serial killer "Freds" alongside messrs Fred West and Fred Shipman

I don't really watch him (anymore), but it's somehow comforting that barmy old 'eccentrics' like him can still get on telly (as opposed to barmy young 'eccentrics' like Jamie Theakston and Gail Porter).
Even so, I feel he's the last in a long line that includes Dr Magnus Pyke and Jack Hargreaves: mad old duffers who didnae give a fuck.
Tommorow belongs to Ant & Dec and Vernon Kay. Brrr, It's getting colder...

what I like about fred:
he always sounds like he actually understands and already knew what he's saying and hasn't just learned it for the show or is reading it from some autocue.
his oil-soaked flat caps are fire hazards.
his shows don't need to be cartoonised like a lot of today's ones.
he's so friendly!
he doesn't say "first" or "earth" or "work." he says "foost" and "ooth" and "wook."
he also says "demonstration" and "maintenance" really funnily.
and other stuff.

Has "Geoff Dickens" named himself after the horrible backbench Tory MP of that name? It's a curious accusation he makes ...

Fred = totally classic.

Do you remember Fred's assistant in the original programs? His job was to stand at the bottom of the chimney or whatever and catch bricks and rubble. He was about 70, had no teeth and wore an even grimier flat cap than Fred. There was a classic moment when he got laid out by a flying brick which flew out of the chute and brained him.

Mrs Stevo adores him, but then again she has a soft-spot for somewhat idiosyncratic northern english types.
