hey guys i thought i'd start this thread to talk about the use of the .TIFF file format in 2010
how can we push the state of the art forward in the new year

(http://tiff.net btw)
I guessed that after thinking about it a little longer than like 5 seconds, but I seriously was going "ugh I come here to ESCAPE my day job" for those 5 seconds

simon who do u write for again?
I write reviews/host podcasts for s0und 0n s1ght. We got some love from them last year but none this year, which is perplexing for a number of reasons, but we're still going for some public screenings.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:05 (fourteen years ago)
you got accredited last year but not this year? that sucks dude!
― real s1ock (s1ocki), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
basically. we got some vouchers for press screenings last year, this year nada. that will not stop me from seeing 3D Herzog.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
ah cool. well let's keep track of what we see and what's good on this thread...
― real s1ock (s1ocki), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago)
My friend gets a pass through her job, and she always passes one or two tickets along to me. So I'm going to see the Frederick Wiseman film on boxing clubs, hopefully the screening where he's there.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 20:52 (fourteen years ago)
Some interesting TIFF-related conversation here (and in the comments): http://girishshambu.blogspot.com/2010/08/film-festivals.html
― C0L1N B..., Friday, 3 September 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago)
I saw Wiseman's Boxing Gym this afternoon. I didn't love it the way I do Welfare or Near Death--at least half the film is club members pummelling the practice bag--but it very much fits into Wiseman's body of work. The Q&A afterward was great. Three or four times, but not in any way that was mean, Wiseman cut people off at the knees. The funniest was a guy who asked about the "behaviouralist tendencies" in his films. Wiseman (paraphrase): "I don't know what behaviouralist tendencies are...so I can't really answer you."

― caek, Sunday, 12 September 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago)
Haha, I wish! No, the only festival I was going to try to make it to this year was London, but flights are too much and I am trying to get my own film done for the end of the year. Everyone I know that goes to a lot of festivals just seems to complain about them? Spoiled brats
― Arlen Lewis (admrl), Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago)
your movie was in a bunch though, right? incl. venice?
― caek, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:11 (fourteen years ago)
Ha, it isn't exactly "my" movie, but no not Venice. It showed at Locarno and TIFF and will be in Vancouver, New York, London and Vienna.

I did! it was sort of herzog-lite, with a few good moments. worth it to see herzog hand ebert a copy of his OTHER new film while I sat 2 ft. away.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it unless you're a giant Herzog fanboy. (I am, but even I'll admit it's no Encounters.)
― Simon H., Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:55 (fourteen years ago)
even encounters was a bit... not first-tier

holy shit bang bang club was so bad btw
― how to train your dagon (s1ocki), Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:57 (fourteen years ago)
so far norwegian wood is my fave
This has less hilarious/profound philosophical musing than Encounters in it though, as a lot of it is given over to people who are not Herzog, and not as interesting.
Kicking myself for missing Norwegian Wood, hoping it'll be at FNC. (god I love FNC.)

canadians love movies about people returning to their hometowns to work out issues with their families.

rrrobyn likes science (fiction?)
― Cox's Muffin syndrome (admrl), Monday, 20 September 2010 02:35 (fourteen years ago)
the celebration was a euro-version of our beloved awkward, dark-but-not-too-dark, somewhat plotless family dramedy. no we did not like it. it made us feel more alone.

I don't care about the Film Festival, but its flagship theatre, the Lightbox, was one of my two main venues before leaving Toronto in the fall.
