i've never watched stanley siegel, but the hosts in the poll choices = my '80s/early '90s in a nutshell.

Only time I've ever seen a full episode of Oprah was when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were on, promoting their live music tour.

Gotta be Jerry.

BTW, these days a man with no legs called Kenny sometimes wanders on to his stage for no apparent reason:

I remember every time my mom fought with my dad, I would find her later typing up a document that started "Dear Oprah." That lady wrote so many letters to Oprah and not one reply. Oprah turned my mom's life into a sad and empty epistolary novel, and that's why I voted Oprah.

Mormons come out of the sky and they stand there (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

maury is definitely up there, as evidenced by the following bulleted list of various actual episode titles that, in my opinion, serves to highlight a particularly distinctive subgenre of daytime talkshow, of which maury is truly a pioneer

  • Can You Save Me? I Am Terrified of Cotton Balls and Frogs!
  • I'm Terrified of Gum, Crabs and Balloons!
  • I'm Terrified of Chalk, Hair and Circus Clowns
  • My Fear of Mustard and Pickles Is Ruining My Life
but ultimately for me it comes down to ricki lake because ricki lake was in cabin boy and cabin boy was a very entertaining movie

del griffith, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

Jenny Jones had the "secret crush" episode where the guest's secret admirer was a man, although he had been assured it would not be, and he went on to kill him after the show.

i was once in the audience for a daytime talk show when i was going to school in nyc. my roommate got a block of like 40 tickets for something called "the mark wahlberg show" and we were PSYCHED, so we all went and this dude comes out:

Would attend talk show hosted by actual Mark Whahberg.

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Sally was my favorite. I got a new pair of glasses with purple/reddish frames last year and my sister thought it was in tribute to SJR, but it was inadvertent.

Didn't Carnie Wilson have a show, too?

that was a great time to be in college

Hell yeah she did. Pretty sure that it was very very short lived.

master of retardment (ENBB), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

They ALL had shows. The Jane Pratt show was so horrible, the Daria episode mocking it wasn't even harsh enough.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

I remember being excited for that because, you know, Sassy and all but it was awful.

Sally Jessy Raphael always struck me as being sleazier than many of the trashier shows somehow--why, I'm still trying to figure out.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

I agree, her show had an extra layer of sleaze that even Jenny Jones would envy. I can't quite pinpoint the reason for that, though.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

wonder which geraldo will win

four years pass...

Loads of porn models/performers used to go on these shows to promote themselves but eventually a lot of them warned and discouraged each other from doing it because they were so often ridiculed.
Jenny Jones in particular got a bad reputation for this. The porn women were told by producers (and apparently even Jones herself) to wear the supplied (usually trashy and poorly fitting) clothing and act provocatively. If they refused they wouldn't have their travelling and accommodation expenses paid.
Some of these women went on partly to defend their work and were told they'd be allowed to do that until the show went on and tried their best to make them look like crazy sluts. What a bunch of assholes.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 00:06 (ten years ago)

I've also heard Montel was not nice but don't know anything more about that.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 00:10 (ten years ago)

Montel gave Sylvia Browne a weekly platform to do her shtick, he can burn in hell.

Related: I used to like catching episodes of "Night Stand with Dick Dietrick", oh, early-mid 90s I guess. Spoofin' on this stuff. And I'm probably one of three humans who like to search for old Tim Stack vids. I tried to start an appreciation thread for him one time several years back. I'll let the stans search for that one.
