how long is your average commute?

mine is ~10 mins (bike) but that was not an option so I went with ~15 mins (bike)

An average of 75 minutes of mostly bus (I drive my car 2 miles to the bus stop).

My previous commute was:

10 minute drive
1 hour + train ride
20-30 minutes of subway
10 minutes walking

20 mins car, voted 30 mins but the poll totally ignores the 20 mins car people just sayin

I alternate my commute depending on the time of day.

Morning - 20 minute bus ride starting a block from my house and ending four blocks from work.

Afternoon - four block walk to 10 minute train ride and ten to fifteen minute walk home.

15 by car, after 4 years of 40-45. nothing like moving closer to work!

My Sydney commute to the same place could be:

5 min walk +
25 minute bus ride+
45 minute train ride+ (add extra 20-30 minutes waiting for train when returning)
10-15 min walk

or

45 min walk+
45 minute train ride+ (add extra 20-30 minutes waiting for train when returning)
10-15 min walk

or

25 min car

I did my similar nightmare commute for about 2 years. It was extrememly taxing on my health, sleep patterns, happiness. I'm so thankful that I got myself out of it.

It really is pretty equal on a good day but the bus stuff is way more dependent on & prone to hassle so it seems longer. But point taken so I'll put 45 min train.

yeah i know i need to get out of it. but leaving my job would effectively end two other peoples' jobs (very small company). also i like the job and i'm very personally invested in the company. i lived closer to my job for 6 years but i hated it. now i live in london and i'm have a much better social life and i'm reluctant to give that up again. hmph xxp

Just moved flat. Was 15 minute walk, now 5 minutes.

i drive between 20-50 minutes each way now so iatee can scold me (in another thread)

(Luckily, there are train stops ~2 min. from my home and ~2 min. from my work.)

10 minute car so i went with ~15

takes me about a 5 to 8 minute walk to work depending on the traffic situation at the one big street I have to cross.

~25 min via train.

15 minute walk and I hope that I will always be able to walk to work.

Less than three minutes by car, then about 45 minutes by intercampus shuttle (I work three days a week at FIU's satellite campus 32 miles away).

~60 min by car or ~90 min by bus/bike. The car option wins almost every day now the nights are drawing in.

30 min car. Public transport option would be 15 min walk + ~20 min train + ~15 min bus minimum so car wins every day. I drive a hybrid, fwiw.

60minutes bus. i lived in the very outskirts of denver and commute to downtown. about 25minutes via car, which i also have... i just prefer to save the money by riding the bus & listening to an album or two. plus parking at school is 5+ dollars.

50 min bus or bike to subway to van, usually more in the PM, sometimes a lot

Currently form the bed to the couch so about 1.5 mins.

I fly to remote locations once or twice a month ~90min flight; sometimes have to then drive for an hr or two. And v v rarely take a chopper

10 minutes on the bike for me, three days a week, which is very convenient and all, but I do miss having some commuting time to listen to music or read a book.

mornings: 5 min bus + 10 min walk
afternoons: 30 min walk

sadly I am too bad at getting up and get too sweaty walking (tmi) to walk in as well as home

but the buses are much slower going home as there is no bus lane in that direction, so this way round works pretty well

v. occasionally I blag a lift and by car it is like 6 minutes door to door, so if I ever get a driving licence it's going to be pretty tempting to be lazy and destroy the planet even though I really don't need to

my sydney commute was 10 mins boat + 30 mins bus

walking 30 seconds to a little wooden jetty then getting the boat across the harbour was a pretty good way to start and end the day. miss u sydney.

I walk it in about 40 minutes, bus takes me most of 30 anyway, takes 10-15 if I get a lift of Mrs V.

Also depends which site I'm on on any given day.

So glad not to be doing 45-60 minutes bus any more, though an enforced daily 1.5-hour reading time was pretty good for me, need to get better at setting aside half an hour for reading before bed

I can't work out 'average' as some days I work from home and some days I drive for 3 hours, some days I take the train for 3.5 hours, other days I walk + train or walk + bus + train. This is all because I live in 2 places and work in 3.

I voted 90+ minutes (car) as that's the most common version. Actually ~120 minutes, most of it on the South Circular. Bloody London.

After whittling down my commute, mainly through changing jobs and moving house, I do feel like I'm in the sweet spot now: The bus ride gives me a chance to have a read for 40 minutes a day and the walk to and from that helps to wake me up/wind me down.

That said, when it's bucketing down like today then 2 mins sounds pretty sweet, Nath...
