I'm actually so socially anxious that the ends of calls are always nervewracking things for me. I usually repeat whatever the other person says (ie, if they say "talk to you soon", I say "talk to you soon" right back). then, usually the other person says bye, and I squeak out a weak "bye" or go "buh-bye" and feel sheepish til the receiver is hung up.

I do this IRL as well, at work particularly, I'll say "seeeeeya!" in this odd singsongy way. I dont mean to, I dunno why it happens.
T'otherweek I was out at a pub with Jim and Haitch and some other mates and I got up and said "bee arr bee" and someone shouted at me for saying BRB IRL :(

Lately if it's a business call that was incoming instead of outgoing, I've been going with a chipper, "Thank you for calling! I'll talk to you again soon." Or some close variation.
On personal calls, it's 100% about the tone of the conversation. There's no rote goodbye. It's anything from a clipped, "See you in an hour," to a honey-voiced, "Goodnight, sweetheart." And everything in between. And some things not in that range at all.
― kenan, Monday, 6 September 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

a friend of mine in high school used to always answer the phone "who dares?" which i thought was really hilarious. also i don't think his mom had caller id so he must have been risking who dare-ing a bunch of middle ages jewish ladies & her coworkers and stuff. nowadays the same guy always answers the phone just singing for like the first fifteen seconds. he has a pretty hilarious on the phone presence but none of his farewells have been particularly memorable

Hahah a long ago ex of mine could do a really convincing radio commercial type voice, so he'd often pick up the phone and jovially greet the caller with "Mmmmmmichael Hill Jewllers!" (which was an ad at the time).
The amount of people who squawked a baffled "uhhh..." and hung up was hilarious.
