some kind of lord, obviously
(and now, I will offer my paraphrasing of this one part in Twister, having not watched it since the late 90s)
Helen Hunt sits at a desk, sulking, ignoring the others who are jolly. They might finally see a crazy storm tomorrow and get that miracle pepsi can science contraption up in the air, this is a time for celebration, for hope! what is she so dang mad at?!
"Helen Hunt has more of a right to sulk over the thought of a twista than all of us combined. remember the great hellstorm of 1973? well, Helen Hunt was IN that storm, It was a category 7 - the highest on the scale. Winds up to 140 mph, the finger of an angry god scraping trails over this wretched landscape. It killed her pa, and two of her brothers, along with 42 other people. nearly swept her up as well. Ever since that she's been chasing these storms...hard to say why...maybe to understand why god fingered her...with his wretched, violent finger in 1973 when she was just a child. She is a legend."

It's wild to have some giant weather system hit basically everywhere *but* Chicago. Or maybe we are just distracted by the (checks phone) currently -8 temperature. My daughter had her classes cancelled *in Wisconsin*, where it is currently -18 (but "feels like -32"!).
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 January 2026 13:43 (four months ago)
my school refused to cancel classes but told us to "feel free" to have zoom class. i chose to have regular class and it honestly wasn't all that terrible. it's sunny, not windy, and there is no precipitation. put on some extra clothes and deal with it, folks.
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 23 January 2026 16:26 (four months ago)
Sent a long email to my union rep last on Wednesday, when 1) all busses were cancelled across the board, 2) schools remained open, 3) the school I was at--a country school in the middle of nowhere--decided to go ahead with their meetings, so my job wasn't cancelled. Turned out to be one of the three or four scariest drives of my life, two hours for what would normally be 50 minutes. There were, as I full well knew there would be, about 30 students in the whole school. Have finally learned to just cancel out of my job on such days and not worry about it.
― clemenza, Friday, 23 January 2026 17:22 (four months ago)
Around here, availability of busses is often what determines a school day or not. That is, if for whatever reason the busses can't run or run safely, then no in-person school, since it's not fair to the kids that depend on the busses to find some other way there. Similarly if it's too cold they'll often move school to home learning, too, since they don't want kids out standing at the bus stop when it is sub zero.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 January 2026 17:39 (four months ago)
There was a brief move here after COVID to send everyone online in a bad storm, but only some boards adopted it, and it seems to have fizzled away. So the drill here is: 1) make sure students are safe by cancelling busses; 2) leave schools open to get funding, and for parents who need them open; 3) try to make in if you're full-time (you probably live reasonably close anyway); and 4) supply teachers, good luck.
― clemenza, Friday, 23 January 2026 18:24 (four months ago)
Bussing is the only reason for snow days, surely? I find it weird that in NYC the buses aren't owned by the DOE but are privately owned contractors or whatever the technical term is.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 23 January 2026 18:55 (four months ago)

― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Friday, 23 January 2026 18:56 (four months ago)
x-post I heard something about NYC keeping schools open on snow days because of the number of children who are eligible for and get free meals at school. Don't know if other jurisdictions account for this in their snow policies.
As for contractors operating school buses, I assume lobbyists per$uaded the higher-ups to contract out these services.

f. hazel, be careful if you drive on Sunday. The Houston weather team i follow (Space City Weather) are sober minded and generally hype free but they are advising to travel with caution since they can’t predict rain fall on Saturday night and if there will be freezing on roadways
HISD is cancelling school on Monday
― sknybrg, Friday, 23 January 2026 21:41 (four months ago)
So far so good...but yesterday our forecast showed a brief window today from about 9am to 1pm with no rain and slightly above freezing temps before the plunge, where power lines and trees could drip-dry a bit. That window is gone this morning, with rain and freezing rain continuing a little into the temp drop.
― WmC, Sunday, 25 January 2026 14:31 (four months ago)
We got some icing last night, but turned into rain and it looks like that's what we get for the rest of the day. Pretty much a nothing here, just cold and wet. Even though schools are already closed tomorrow out of caution, which is probably good because with the temperature drop tonight I guess we could still get ice on the roads.
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 25 January 2026 16:23 (four months ago)
Very respectable snowstorm here - a manageable amount that has made things look pretty and inspired pretty much everyone to stay inside in their jammies with cocoa and Netflix. It's Sunday morning and we have known this was coming for a week.
No one has been able to talk about anything other than the appropriate amount of grocery shopping to have done. Which is understandable because the news is uniformly horrible so the weather is what we talk about.
I have discovered an amazing coincidence: everyone I talk to knows how to calibrate their pre-storm shopping appropriately. It is truly amazing: going by self-reported data, everyone's approach was precisely measured and correct. Anyone who bought more than them is clearly insane, and anyone less prepared is foolish.
Another finding from self-reported data: each of these people drives the exactly correct speed on highways.

When a post in your FB feed about the storm begins "Here in Nashville..." Peter Frampton is not the first person you expect to see as the poster.
Hated to do it, but cancelled a job today because of the weather. I've started following a "Perth Country Road Reporting" FB group that covers all the schools I go to (should have done that a while ago), and while you'll get conflicting reports depending upon time and who's posting, one of the two routes I could have taken to the job, a 10 km stretch of country road, had 15 cars in the ditch.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 27 January 2026 20:45 (four months ago)
You know the weather is bad when it's been single digits here for a week and we just got five+ inches of snow dumped on us over the weekend and that's not enough to move the news needle. It felt like it was coming down for 24 hours here a couple of days ago, and I don't even recall the forecast that day calling for anything more than cold temps and "light" snow.
